Good point Tom,

My truck is reg. for 14500 and the trailer 14000, so I'm definately in trouble if I get stopped. Fortunately, I can stick to the back roads most of the time.

My brother in law is an inspector for NYSDOT.  When he first took the job, he was teamed up with a NYS Trooper. He was not impressed with the way they tend to harrass the little guy trying to make a living and ignore the big name trucking companies with obvious safety violations. The first chance he got, he transferred to school bus inspections and is much happier.

It seems to be quite the opposite, here, Brian. I travel I-10 on a daily basis, and always see the DOT cops in action. The only things I see them stop is OTR truckers, and dump trucks. I've yet to see one of them pull over a pickup with a trailer. Of course, I will probably be the first. :-[

Fla. DOT is death on Log trucks, DanG.  Lots of money to be made on a truck that has just come from the woods.

Yea same here in pennsylvania if it has loggs on it you can bet that it is overloaded and has at least a few lights out

Could it be that they are reacting to the things they've had problems with? In our sector, there have been a number of dump truck accidents, as well as a bunch of OTR types running over folks. We haven't had a major accident involving a log truck in a while. I haven't seen a log truck pulled over by the truck gestapo in a long while, either. I'll bet that if a log truck lost his load and smooshed a bunch of people, you wouldn't be able to drive one around the block without getting stopped. A 20' utility trailer getting seperated from it's pick-up, and whacking out some folks would probably cause major problems for us little guys, too.

That could be.  I think it is an easy target for a DOT officer to show that he is being efficient.   You can write a ticket on a work truck almost anytime.  I don't think many are error free. light out, lens broke, tire worn, etc.  OTR trucks are usually in pretty good shape, it's the paperwork that they nail those guys for.  I wish they would pay more attention to OTR truckers following to closely or endangering other vehicles.  They seem to think it is a game and it leads to deaths.  Truckers didn't used to act like that.  We have chip trucks going 70 on two lane roads and running everything off the road. some log trucks will do it too. OTR trucks are the worse.

DanG,

I don't think my Bro.in law was referring to the p/u & tlr. crowd unless they were pulling a D-9 dozer with a 1/2 ton p/u :o. He was more concerned with the extra attention being paid to the mom & pop operations that really couldn't afford a BS citation or impoundment.

How about an update on your MileMarker, have you had chance to use it yet. Also I have been looking at their specifications and both the 10,500 and the 12,000 models have the same hydraulic motor, gear ratio and drum size. Any idea what the difference is?
I was thinking of making make a skidding wench for my tractor using a PTO wench from northern toolhttps://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=position"> Note:Please read the Forestry Forum's postion on this company but I could also use the MileMarker on my truck. :P

I thought th DOT left little trucks alone until I got a ticket with a 1ton superduty Ford. The busted me for 1500 Lbs overweight cause the company didn't license the truck properly . Portable scales they love to set up on an exit ramp or rest area  a put any thing bigger than a pick up truck on them. I was driving down the road the other day , a tri axle log truck got on the 2 lane ahead of me.  He had a huge pile of  logs on,  with the bottom 2 rows sticking out the back past the bunks by 10 feet with no flag. I thought he was really asking for it . About 10 miles later at a pullover spot guess who was sitting ther with their scales. A 1 hr later I was going back the other way and he was still there with another log truck taking some of the logs off before the DOT would let them go. I'm sure the driver had a hefty ticket in his pocket cause they inspected it also and it didn't look like the truck were well maintained.I talked to one of the guys at the log yard this week and he said the truck that came to unload some of the logs got ticketed also for some violations.
