Title: Detroit 8-71 price?
Post by: Satamax on August 13, 2020, 10:31:04 PM
Hi everybody. Well, this is pipe dreams.

But if ever I find a 8-71 near me in southern France, or Northern Italy. How much should I pay for it?

I have no need, nor plan for one. But I'd love one. Just for the sound.

Thanks guys.

So you like to hear them scream do you? :D That is a tough question to answer, it depends on the market and supply. How plentiful are they in Europe? The screamin jimmys are not plentiful in North America any more because of emission regulations and the cost of fuel, they are not economy champs which would be an issue in your part of the world.

Thanks Sawguy21. Well, emissions, on a stationary piece of equipment, or a tractor, are no problem. I won't stuff that in a car or truck.

Well, i don't like the sound in trucks.

But this!  ;D

I love the idle sound.

I have had that for several months.

On chairlifts i work on, often we have MWM deutz 8 cylinders. I can get two of those, for a few bottles of booze, i think.

I never managed to sell an 8-71 when i worked at the scrap yard.  Or a 3208.

Duetz 4cyl... I had a guy fly from washington state to mass in a snowstorm that cancelled his first 2 flights.. Just to hear it run and watch us pallet for transport.  Needed for his pit screener and it had 600hrs, from an aerial lift.

One of My Son's has a 871 on a Morbark Chipper. When he first bought it He wanted to put straight pipes on it. It is a left hand rotation version. Which back in the day city buses used them a lot around here. He swapped one out,and we believe he has the only chipper with a Jake Brake.

In the movie, Coal miners daughter, the sound effects where great. When the bus pulls in you can really here the jimmy. Also the pony start on the cat. There was once an 8-53 but I never heard one.

That was my alarm clock when I was a kid and getting up for school.  The local sawmill, about 4 miles away, would fire off that 871 about the time I needed to get up.  When they engaged the clutch and brought that saw up to speed she would talk.  Can't say that I miss it too much.  Noise gets old after a while.  Wish I knew what earplugs were when I was a teenager.......paying for it now.

About a year ago I sold an old (1975) Ford L9000 dump with a 8-71,($1500  usd) had not been started for 4-5 years. When it fired it went  from O to wide open and would not shut down, Ran at the "screaming level for about a minute or so until I was able to get something to cover the air intake and shut it down. something froze in the fuel system.  That 8-71 was really wound up. The buyer and his two helpers were really stepping back from that screamer.

Not sure if they made it with the -71 series, me not being a mechanic, but if you can get a _53 series with a turbo it really quiets the noise down and adds a little oomph. Also around here, PNW, those old Jimmy's can be had if you look a little. Price though varies a ton.

I saw one in running nice shape, didnt know the machine was being scrapped. 8-53 isnt uncommon like a 1-71 or a 51 series but theres isnt many on the land side of stuff.

My grandfather lived on an old wooden 44' navy boat with a 6-71, at the milton yacht club before the hendries fire.  I hear my aunt still has a whole kit for it. Boat is long gone.
