Deer Season ended in WV
« on: December 31, 2015, 07:29:19 PM »
Well, our deer season ended today. We had youth/senior hunts (youths 8-14 and seniors over 65) Saturday and Monday where eligible hunters could harvest an antlerless deer each day that did not count against their limits. Tuesday through today was antlerless rifle season for hunters with unused doe tags. Also archery season still in where could use any remaining tags.

I went up and sat in my shooting house and read a few hours. Had 9 does, yearlings and this year fawns in range starting around 1615. Several bedded down in bow range. I did not shoot at any as did not need them that bad. Just hoping a last minute buck would come out but did not.

Neat to watch the deer though. One yearling doe (I assume born last year) walked up and slapped a bedded down doe in the face with her front hoof and she got up and surrendered her spot. One six month old fawn was trying to nurse. Another tried to mount a doe. Mostly they just chased each other around, lounged around and chewed their cuds - if deer have cuds - then moseyed off.

We probably did not harvest enough to see this many on the last day of the season. I'll have 2 granddaughter old enough for youth hunts next year so maybe they will come help Grandpa thin the herd. Hope they do well through the winter. All these looked in pretty good shape. New season will tell. Hope you all did/do well if season still open for you.

Yup, it is about much more than shooting.   :)

I can't count the number of times I've wished I was holding a camera instead of a gun, it's a lot of fun watching "nature" when it doesn't know you're there.  Have fun with the grandkids, can't wait to see the pictures and hear the stories next year.

I was treated to several chorus's of the "turkey congress" at sunrise from the woods about 100 yards from the stand a few weeks back. It sounded like there were 100 of them back there all trying to get their two cents in. Then got to watch 2-3 hens wander along grazing in the brush for an hour or so.

Passed on a nice sized doe waiting to see what else might come along. Went 0 for 2015...... :-\
