I know it has a bad rap, but does anyone else enjoy their felling or logging videos? As someone with a short attention span, they are fun to watch

Jeff

Won't have it on my phone.

I like the format of brief to the point videos. Coming from China, no thanks and I won't have it on my phone. I mean, Google and Facebook are probably handing all of my info over to the CCP anyways but at least they hide their connections a little bit.

It's just a fun time waster for me, the Chinese would be disappointed going through my business😊.

That's what many people think but little do they know it's a gateway to get to other people with the information they are after

OH logger

No tik toc here but I do enjoy you tube shorts

Who to trust is the big question isn't it?!
My thoughts are tiktok is a problem for big tech and certain political players being exposed.
That's why they want to stifle it.  It's real time beyond the control.  From what I've seen it's largely a Conservative platform.   We know what YouTube does with that.
The examples I can give you belong in the Restricted area.  That's where these topics belong imo otherwise they will always be lacking content and not tell the complete story.
I post on tiktok and utube shorts mostly wildlife clips.
There's wonderful guitarists playing live.  Vallie Duncan is one. Great comedians. I follow a lot of the contractors, carpenters and do-ers for their tips and expertise.

Mooseherder, no agenda here, just enjoy watching the clips. I can see why government employees shouldn't have it on their work phones, but for me it's just fun entertainment. Like you I enjoy the wildlife videos, plus its fun to make videos with music to it from my trail cams, so far it just seems like harmless fun

Ron Wenrich

Govt workers don't need tik tok on their work phones.  They're for work, not entertainment.  Same goes for a lot of other websites.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

terry f

Ron, absolutely. I'm so glad to be out of the workforce, kids (under 45) can't go five minutes without checking their phones, it gets tiring trying to police it. The amount of lost production is mind blowing, and I don't see it getting any better anytime soon, and no doubt government workers are worse

SawyerTed

There are too many "portals" into my life and personal information already.  Facebook, a cell phone, a computer, a business and a DOT number are enough exposure for me.  No Tik Tok or Instagram for me.

Does anyone know if all the problems are related to tik tok itself or even the videos that are on Facebook watch? Do you have to have the app or be logged in to get in the danger zone?

Mooseherder

I dunno specifically what is suspect about tiktok other than China owns it apparently.  It's an app.  Once you're in, you're in.  If I get Shanghai'd y'all know where I am.  :D
It was a great tiktok music afternoon. :)

I suspect the concerns are about general data being collected by a Chinese controlled company. Google collects all sorts of location info from users, and I have to assume that would be available to certain 3 letter Govt departments (with or without a warrant?).
A Chinese company collecting similar data is really no different, but i'm not an interesting person to them. Now diplomatic or military personal? Their location / movements would be of interest, and operational security says you don't give away that sort of information to your competition.
If you remember back to the "World's dumbest Terrorist"? He posted to FB a picture of him outside the ISIS headquarters, with the phone's Geolocation data enabled. Next day the building suddenly exploded, can't remember if it was cruise missiles or smart bombs, but he gave away the exact GPS coordinates of their headquarters.
That's the sort of information leakage the Govt are worried about.

I don't know why military stuff is allowed on there but there was a guy in a cockpit launched off an aircraft carrier today.  Not the first time.

I'd assume it wasn't live streamed, but go-pro footage uploaded later. Also I'd think the Military would have some regulations about what can be uploaded. Clip of a plane taking off? Nothing classified there, you can see that in a Top Gun movie / Youtube / FB etc. But a video about how the targeting radar actually works? Nah, you don't want to post that.

I loaded a 30 second video short this morning of a large turtle sunning itself to tiktok and then uploaded the same video to YouTube.  There are zero views at YouTube as of tonight.  Tiktok has 615 views.   I have about 300 followers at both places.  I'm not doing this for monetization but tiktok must be cleaning metas and googles clock in ad revenue.

terry f

Mooseherder, I seen that😊I started following you there. Tiktok is so much easier to navigate, and you aren't bombarded by adds like YouTube. I do basically the same thing as you, just sharing things I get on my trail cams that I find interesting, but it's fun to add music to it or voiceovers😊

terry f

Firewoodjoe, probably half the Reels on Facebook were made on tiktok, but I don't think they route you there unless a link is shared. I know when I do a video, it goes to my personal gallery when done, then I post to Facebook or send them to my kids or grandkids, no different than any of my other pictures.

Mooseherder

Big hearing Tuesday in front of Congress/tiktok ceo I think.

Sedgehammer

It might not be you they are wanting info, but in your contacts. Once it's on your phone they have access to nearly if not everything. They hope to catch people doing something embarrassing or even something illegal or immoral like porn or spouse cheating. Then they can use that info someday to compromise you in some way. to track someone where they went and when. Use all your personal info in ways that you have no way of knowing until it's too late

It supports a certian gov. Will not, in anyway, support them or anyone that uses it as much as I can

Personally, since it's known who owns it, why anyone wood have it on their phone, is beyond my understanding

Just because something has some good aspects or uses, doesn't negate the negatives of it and who knows, maybe tiktok have info that helped enable the crack down

The owners of that forum promote education, professional goals, and high achievements for kids and related in the home country. In this country not so much. I wonder why .....

Is the app already pre-loaded on your smart phone?  You may want to disable or remove it then.  I did that with meta services.  It let's me disable the app but not delete it entirely on my Samsung Galaxy 21.  I think tiktok came preloaded on my wife's apple phone also.

Sedgehammer

I was able to delete on my s22 ultra

Sledgehammer, if it's contacts they are after, then I would surmise they would have seen your business, since I'm sure someone in your contacts has it on their phone, but I have doubts on all that. Again, I have no agenda, it's just a easy app to use to view practically anything you'd like to see, whether logging, milling, or like me, just animal pics, but I see it isn't popular on here.

SwampDonkey

Google and Facebook have proven to be as nefarious as they come mining every bit of data about you conceivable and working as a government arm at times to control your content and make you conform to their ideas and beliefs, similar in principle to a religion. Google controls every app on your device, as with the makers, who will not let you control what is allowed on it. An app will often appear that you never even approved, other than you clicked on an agreement page the first time you got the device that allows them full access and most have never read it or know what they agreed to. If you have any financials on there, they know it, and can seize your money with a request from the government for whatever reason they can come up with, no matter how wildly fictitious they can make it. Then advertise you on the media as the next threat. So what else is there that anyone else is capable of?

Terry, very possibly a probably. All i know is I recommend not supporting the ownership group

One thing I left out. The biggest gain the membership group has is using it for AI. The more information they can obtain just by people using the app to get habits, reactions, replies. Human behavior in general the more accurate their AI will be in using it against Americans. Make no mistake,  everything the ownership group does, is against America. No matter how innocent you are, you're still helping

Have no idea what China is doing with AI, but I suspect the exact thing Americans will be using it against Americans for. Some recently developed AI in the US has the makers already giving warnings about it's use and want it regulated. Have already used it for fakery to test it, that with a passing glance one might think it is actually real.

SwampDonkey. Agreed on certian groups in america will use it on us, but I'll easier deal with that then what china uses it for and I do know for a fact that's one of the reasons china uses the data for

I just will not justify having an app in my pocket that I knowingly give my location and most all my private information as well as info on how to get to you to my country's biggest enemy.

I don't feel any safer with any of them, no matter who owns them. And they do have offices globally. I don't trust companies that have abandoned us to go over there to make stuff to sell back either. I go out of my way to buy Canadian and USA made. Robert Noyce warned about electronics being moved off shore over 30 years ago, now we will face it. When a pioneer of such technology says something, it should not be ignored.
