I usually use a wire cup brush on the end of a die grinder.  Make sure that you use a soft to medium bristle so that you don't score the aluminum.
Peterson 10" WPF with 65' of track
Smith - Gallagher dedicated slabber
Tom's 3638D Baker band mill
and a mix of log handling heavy equipment.

A tooth brush with the rear of the bristles heated  over a candle and then bent carefully gives you a miniature toilet brush.
This brush with any suitable cleaner is the best tool for the job.
I use valve grinding paste with a drop of kerosene for tough deposits.
We have a mild household abrasive lotion called CIF (Uni Lever).
This is good for a more gentle cleaning.
Prior to the cleaning, I use an old spark plug to block the hole and pour in some mild caustic soda solution a few minutes.
This loosens the carbon.
I retain worn out emery paper for cleaning the piston.Fast cleaning with minimum aluminum loss
Soap and water and hot air finish off the cleaning job

Creative solutions like this always appeals to me.  I'm gonna try the toothbrush method.
Thanks for the tips!

Easy-Off oven cleaner removes baked on deposits as well. Won't hurt the jug or piston.

I'm doing that now to one of the pistons, works good, but is slow.

easy way is if you know somebody with a bead blaster, or somebody that will let you clean out his sandblaster and use beads.

bump,
Well, thus far, The EasyOff method has really worked well, a couple of applications with wiping clean in between has produced a piston that is spotless.  Works better at room tempature, or above.
Still gonna try a couple of other tricks,
thanks,

I'll bet an environut whacko, turned loose with a promise of carbon credits, would have you cleaned up slick as a whistle in no time at all.   Call  555-gore and press something other than 1. :D
