dewalt planer malfunction

 8)  i have got a dw 735 portable planer that the thickness adj or the crank that rases and lowers the blades keeps locking up on in fact this is second one dewalt replaced the first one the one now is exactly one year old we have used it to plain some cedar paneling the blades still look like new in other words very little use question is what are we doing that might cause this or is it the planer  :( :( 8)

Does it stop cranking around the same thickness' each time?

 8)   no i dont think so it is almost like their is something lodged on one of the sprockets and the chain has lodged but the sprthanks     ockets are clearcould it be something in the assw that locks the head when you are feeding the board through  8)

I'd have to say faulty engineering. My old shop planer has planed a lot of hardwood, if it calved tomorrow, it wouldn't owe me a thing. I've never had any trouble with up and down. I just have to be careful not to take too much bite at a time.  ;D

I have a little Rigid..unfortunately it is post overseas move...but, I needed quarter round for an entire house..375 bux for the quarter round..279 for a planer..and I already had a router table..

anyway..I've been pretty happy with it..just got done fixing up a curb snag rolling cart for it..

What I'd really like is to have my big powermatic up and working..

I had a similar problem with my Ryobi benchtop planer.  It developed a rust spot on one of the columns that the head rides on.  It was in a place you couldn't see without a mirror.  When it jammed, I put a little too much pressure on the crank and it stripped a gear.  That gave me enough inspiration to fix up the old Belsaw planer I had bought for half what I gave for the Ryobi. :

I asked my son how his Dewalt 735 has been, and he said it was working great.

I'm wondering if the automatic lock down on yours is binding, and not "automatically" un-locking for some reason. You mentioned that seemed to "lock up".
I don't know how the lock-down works but see it is an advertised feature of the 735.

My smaller Dewalt planer has a manual lock feature.

But the old sledge might work too... :D :D :D
