Neighbor friend had a walnut tree at his trailer park that he wanted removed, no problem. He asked if I wanted the log 8' x 20" butt and I said yes. He was going to burn it anyway. I asked if it had any nails, nope, no nails. Good deal!
Well this morning I thought I would saw it up and get it air drying. Spotted a sheetmetal screw right off near the butt, cut it out. Well now I had better do some checking. Run metal dector over it and bingo found another. Cut it out. Looks good now so I start sawing. Blade cut a little wavy so I put on a resharp. On second cut, Zing. Cut sheetmetal screw into. It was 2" below the bark and the detector didnt see it. Put on another blade and and zing cut wire into. Cut out wire, changed blade. Made a couple more cuts and Zing, cut antena guy wire into. Cut it out but blade still cut ok. Neighbor friend was right, no nails. Made 11 each 1" boards. Real expensive high dollar walnut now. But it was fun anyway.bg

the metal detector must not have been working properly ;)
Just think what that will do to your planer knives :).
Walnut trees attract metal, especially in trailer parks. ;)
Hey Bill,
Come by and I will give you a whole stack of bands that have cut stuff like that!
PC
I hit 3 16-pennies in one walnut log. I finished the log out with the same blade and had at least 5 hits on the 3 nails. Made it all the way through, though. No way was I going to reblade.
I was thinking about getting a metal detector what kind was yours I want to make sure I don't get that one :D
That makes that one of those "highly valuable" walnut logs we've been reading about!
It's really too bad to, because you really feel you're coming into a deal and it costs you.
Looked like a nice log, otherwise.
I was helping a friend saw out an old maple log with his alaskan mill, 40" at the widest point, we hit a few nails here and there. But after sharpening the saw for "the last time" we hit a cluster of 10 nails in about a 6 square inch area. Suddenly he thinks a metal detector is a good idea, go figure? :D
I think the metal detector(fresh new blade) was working just fine. It made that not so lovely zing sound every time it found metal. :)
I miss my old partner Tom used to twist his tail, learned to immitate hitting a nail noise,he'd be checking the cant then realize. Frank c.

There are always new things to learn on the forum. Today I learned to shorten the phrase "putting another saw blade on the mill" to just "reblade the mill".
Love it. Thanks, Okra.
90% of the yard trees I cut have metal in them. I cant remember the last one I cut that didnt.

You got that right. 95% of the logs I get come from tree trimmers who get these logs from peoples yards.
Some weeks I saw more BF from nails than I do wood.
Woodmizer Re-Sharp sends me a Christmas card every year. :D

;D No problem, any time. I get so tired with the shortcomings of the English language, I work constantly to improve it. If you hang around me enough you'll hear quite a few okraisms. My spell-checker hates me. :D
I bought it through HF junk store.
How deep down does an expensive one detect metal?
PC no thanks, I saw yout scrap pile of blades, bg
Woodmizer Re-Sharp sends me a Christmas card every year. Funny
"Okraism"....as if saying Okra is not funny enough. ;D
I agree with Cedarman..."Re-blade" is a winner!
Not bad for a farmer :D :D :D
Bill, I have a Garrett wand metal detector and it will go at least 6" deep.

What model? We wants one.
I have a Garret 250 and it works great, it will find small nails at least 6 or more inches into the log.
Where do you guys buy your Garretts? I went to their website and they weren't very forthcoming about sales, want you to sign up and send them all your info first before they tell you the price. I want to just order the blame thing and be done with it.
Which one would you order?
We would want the small hand held one that detects through 6" of wood.
Mine was ordered through a local "treasure hunter" store. I can't remember the name of the place off hand.
Nick
Personally, if I was spending those $$$, I would favor one designed for logs which has a curved search head instead of the flat "treasure hunter" head.
I just want one small enough to use easily with one hand. Shorter than 2 feet.
This is the model I have http://www.garrett.com/securitysite/security_super_scanner_main.aspx
And it works pretty good for you?
It works very well. smiley_thumbsup
This is the one I have. It works but maybe not good enough. bg

Attached is the one I have. I shortened the rod so it is only about 2' now.

Just Google "Lumber Wizard".
You might try kellyco metal detectors.com They are a large distributor. They carry many brands and give advice and service .
well i've been sawing now for a few years first with a chainsaw mill and for the last year with home built bandsaw mill. most of the trees i get are yard trees and so far i've been pretty lucky with hitting metal......UNTIL TODAY! i picked up 4 or 5 old walnut logs from a craigslist ad. the logs had been sitting on the ground for several years but i picked them up cheap. when i was loading them up last fall i noticed a couple of nails on the outside of one of the logs and thought: "hmmm i better be careful with these...."
holy mother of mary. i started sawing the butt log (around 20" by 10') and very quickly hit a nail. darn, well hopefully that'll be ZING! oh crap another one man that ZING! ZING! sucks but i'd better ZING! keep sawing this ZING! log. that's right, i hit 5 nails in one pass!!! switched blades turn log ZING! well i ended up with some nice firewood and a few blunt bands. :D :D
the next log was no better. i hit more nails in one pass than i've hit in the last few years of sawing. this is for every goofball trying to sell me their yard trees for hundreds of dollars: nail infested yard trees exist!! and bands aren't cheap. thanks for listening to my rant. ;D ;D
Just thought I would mention that I've dealt with the Kellyco Co. out of Florida, Ocalla Fl. if I remember right. My dealings were with them were for gold detecting machines.
I would think they can get just about any detector you may want and run specials all the time through email notices for a wide variety of machines.
Good service, returned my calls and called me when they said they would.
No, we are not affiliated with eachother, I was impressed with their customer service.
I got lucky cutting 12-14 logs with CSM and went right over and right under a screw on one of the last 1" boards & cut the screw head off when edging with a hand circular saw.
I have a gold detector that will find a staple and #8 birdshot but did not use it..... but think I would have if cutting with a bandmill.
I use a White DFX...its a treasure hunter model, but will find a nail deep in a log...But you can't use use it if the log is on the mill or even close to any large metal object...I hit a nail this evening and had to take the cant off the mill to check it further..It was in the middle of a 24 in log.....That was the only time I have ever found just one nail...Banjo
hey magic.. how deep dose that lumber wizzard read to?
not bad for 170 bux i guess
I know some of the logs here most likely have metal in them comming from yards and farms
Well, I just got around to trying to order it through Kellyco. I get on the website, and would you know, it's on sale! Excellent. Then I go to add it to my cart, and would you know, it's discontinued.

Well, I called them this morning to make sure, and they confirmed they actually do have it, that was just a website error, so I ordered it over the phone. I should have it now in time to check the two custom walnut logs I just brought back last night. Since I won't be doing them for a week or two. :-*
What brand/model are you getting?

Sorry I missed this earlier. My Wizard is the II and it cost about $100. The new one is a III
It will find nails that you would hit on the next pass, but not much deeper. I am OK with it, but it is what it is. I am not spending a couple hundred $$$ that I don't have on something that I don't need.
I would think that a White would be top of the line.

I guess I have to scan the log before putting it on the mill. :-\ I'm glad it's that sensitive, sort of, but I would like to scan on down through as I mill.
