Is there a rule of thumb for file size? I run 3/8 pitch chain on my saws and one dealer sold me a 13/64 round file and another said to use 7/32. How do I know which is correct?

Both are correct.  You should use the 7/32 when the chain is new, but as it wears down from sharpening you should switch to 13/64 to follow the profile of the tooth.

i just use the 7/32 until the chain is worn out.  ;D
I eat a high-fiber diet.  Lots of sawdust!

Yup  7/32" til the chain is gone

Here's a selector guide ...far right side of chart.

It's a good idea to drop down one file size as the cutter gets filed back about half its length.

Ditto, Minnesota boy and Corley ;D
