Title: 2021 Annual Forestry Forum Pigroast
Post by: Jeff on March 09, 2021, 11:43:30 AM
We are having it. Wanna Come? :)

This is not the official RSVP topic, we will start one of those with a count the first part of June.  This topic is to let you know, yea, we are having it, I DON'T CARE WHO SAYS WHAT!.  It's our home. We will make food and welcome anyone that wishes to show up!!

Area Motels (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+lodging&hl=en&ll=43.995778,-84.92981&spn=0.51866,1.344452&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=lodging&hnear=Harrison,+Clare,+Michigan&t=m&fll=43.995778,-84.92981&fspn=0.51866,1.344452&z=10)

Area Camping (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+camping&hl=en&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=camping&hnear=Harrison,+Michigan+48625&t=m&z=11)

I strongly recommend getting opinions on hotels or motels in the area from us or other members that have come to the pigroast. There are a handful that turn up on those google maps that we will strongly advise against. There are plenty of very good places to stay.

WHO ARE OUR PROSPECTS? :D :)

A little early to tell, but I did run the directions. Its about a 12 hour drive for me. The most direct route has me cutting across Ontario and I am wondering what the borders are like just now. I don't have (and because of COVID) can't get one of those fancy licenses that would let me through and my passport is long out of date. I am assuming a border crossing is out for me, but maybe someone here knows better? Anyway, I am thinking hard on it.

I want to come to it, and I'm bringing the wife, but she needs a hard date so that she can submit it for her to be able to take off.

I don't remember what the date(s) were because I've never been able to come. Please give me the date(s) again.

Yes, I got that. But the date is the thing. I'm assuming 8-1-2021ish. It's to vague for the wife and our 14hr drive, both ways. Because of my medical condition she'll have to drive lots of it.

The date says August 7, 2021. That would be the seventh of August.

My sons have informed me that stating the obvious is my superpower. Sometimes that comes in handy.

We are going to try. Long trip (12.5 hours) but no doubt worth it.

Going in and out of Canada ain't gonna happen especially without a passport.

According to the first post you have approx. 150 days to resolve your issues.
You might be able to get into Oh Canada ok eh, but getting back into the USA without an
enhanced drivers license or a passport could be a nightmare.
Approx. 150 days and counting tick tock tick tock ..........

I made the mistake to go through Canada to go to Boonsville. It's shorter they say. Distance wise maybe. I'd rather be driving than parked in a line for hours.

About a 10 hour drive for me.  It's a strong maybe if the wife approves it.  I may bring the camper to avoid hotels.  Is there some good trout fishing around there?  I need a fishing trip.

I didn't think about my son's birthday being the 9th.  I will try to come up several days before the roast and spend a few days fishing and then be at the roast on 7th and then drive home on 8th.  Probably meet family in Branson MO as that's our traditional spot to spend the last week of summer vac before kids go back to school.

Only a 40 hour drive for me! ::)  With fuel prices the way they are going, probably cheaper to fly!  Alas, not in the cards for me but sure would be fun to put real names to the handles and see some faces...

Since 911 it is not worth it to try and cut through Canada.  The time you would have saved is taken up in the long lines at border.
And I can't imagine what it will be like now with Covid.

The Canada-US border is closed to all non-essential ground travel, and has been for eight or so months.
However, by August, that might be changed. Hopefully.

My oldest is thinking about Hillsdale College.  She's still got another year of high school though.  Occasionally I get business trips to Detroit/Troy.  If either of those factors have me in the area when you do this in some future year I'll come out.  Otherwise it's about 2400 miles (each way) to drive.  I'm sure the pig is tasty and the company excellent, but that's a long way to go.

so happy to see this thread. I am so sick of this paranoid freakout lock down the world cr*..

Just for you guys thinking about going through the border crossings. DON'T!!!! last time I tried for the last pigroast it added about 4.5 hours to the trip sitting in the stupid lines to get through. I made better time taking the low road and missing my turn and going even lower than I did going through canada.

That was also posted in the "I did something dumb today" thread. Thats how bad it was :)

Just very early planning her: Can anybody recommend a place close to Jeff that might have small cabins or such like? Second choice is an older motel type where everybody has their own front door. The wife and I travel with our own coffee pot, get up, make coffee early and sit and read or relax for an hour or so. Old and set in our ways. I Want to make her as comfy as possible. Also, we both still smoke, so going outside3 and away from folks to do that is important.
Re-looked at the routes and she wanted to see Niagara falls one more time. Her family hails from Buffalo and she wanted one more drive by. Taking that route around the bottom of the lake shore adds like 3 minutes to the driving time predicted. We are due east of the lakes, so taking 90 west verses 80 west is of little difference that I can see.
All advice cheerfully accepted. It's been decades since I have driven an interstate visit or anything over 9 hours. Gotta get my head in this game in case I can close the deal. ;D

@Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1) how about the fishing around there.  I'd really like to do some wading for trout in small streams.  Anything like that around there.  I use spinning gear and not fly.

What about that Spike Horn Creek I see not too far away? At least MI has a very nice $10/day non-resident license. I may even throw my rod in the truck assuming I can pull this together.

You can not be over 5 miles from a lake creek or stream here. Our town motto is "20 lakes in 20 minutes"  there are trout streams all over. I'm not really a trout fisherman, as I don't like to eat them, but plenty of people are.

I think my wife is on board and I found a place that should make her happy, but they want a NON-Refundable 50% deposit. I called and they have no exception if things get shut down. I was hoping to find a place where we could get a cabin that also has campsites, but I drew a blank. Any suggestions? Doc and I would like to stay at the same place. He has a trailer, and we do not.
 Any suggestions folks?

Thanks Jeff.  I do not like to eat trout either, but they are one of my favorite to catch.  My favorites for eating are walleye and northerns.

@Old Greenhorn (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=42103) and @doc henderson (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=41041) I will likely be bringing the 5th wheel and will need a camping spot too.  Let me know what you find and I will do the same.  I will likely be coming in several days before the pig shindig so I can do some fishing.

Spent the afternoon cruising around looking at what's available that had camping and rental cabins or trailers. Only found one and that has has the no-refund deposit.
Looks like we will have to pick something that is close to where others are camped. If youse guyz have any suggestions, I am all ears. I just looked into RV rentals (wife's idea) but that is cost prohibitive for us. It seems like at least the wife has wrapped her brain around this and is engaged. 8)

Me too, Doc.
Except me; I'll keep my mask on, because everyone tells me I'm 65%-70% better looking with my mask on!
And as for fishing, there are many options for lake and stream fishing anywhere you go. The lake in Jeff's town is well known for Walleye and Musky (my dad and I would hit that lake quite frequently and have landed many Musky there...). Trout streams abound, and if I can arrange it, maybe a few of us can hit the big lake for Chinook. The state of Michigan website has the 2022 2021 regs out on their website, and it details the streams that different types of bait can be used on.

This will be my first time as well. Everyone seems, that I have electronically "talked to", to be really keen on having me come up to see n visit with everybody. I don't believe that anyone is going to have a cow about it (pig maybe 🤔). it just seems that the only thing to remember IS, this is not OUR house, it's @Jeff (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1) and the rest of the admins. I'm a newcomer, and this is going to be the first time that "I've" had the right opportunity in my life to go. OK, it is Official, the Wife is fully on board and we pulled the trigger and rented the ONLY trailer rental they have at Hidden Hill Campground so we can be with some of the camping crowd. I had a lovely chat with both the Husband and wife that own the place, I think we talked for 40 minutes about roasting pigs, raising kids and surviving a pandemic world. Very pleasant and friendly folks, looking forward to meeting them. I note that we made the first reservation for the weekend, and yes they know about the Pig Roast from previous years. In fact, if you mention the pig roast or the FF when you reserve your spot, once we hit 8 in the group we get a discount. She was kind enough to start a list because based on what I read, we will hit that number if previous years are any indication. She also mentioned that they 'love pig roast leftovers [wink, wink]'. :D
So we are committed and more excited than we deserve to be. This will be the first vacation my wife and I have taken together in about 10 years and we plan to enjoy ourselves all along the way. If any of the easterners who have done the route know of things we might look out for between the NY border and Harrison, please pass it along. I think we will stop for the night somewhere around Youngstown and Cleveland, OH, but we are not firm on anything.
Get those reservations in early folks, the last two events I remember a lot of folks scrambling for a place to stay when June hit. Just sayin'
This is gonna be GREAT! bon_fire

Yeah, shift work is tough scheduling. I hope you can pull it off. As you will be there before us, let me know if you find any lazy little fishing holes. Nothing fancy I am easy. ;D
Also I forgot to ask if they have any internet at the campground for forum updates, maybe whne somebody calls them, they can ask and pass it along?

Having made the commitment, my wife and I were reflecting a little and just realized this is our first vacation without kids or grandkids in over 36 years. I hope we can remember how to do this without help. ;D

They were such nice folks on the phone, I figure maybe there was a fair chance 'something could be worked out'. ;D Maybe it's easier to just have them come by? I dunno. I know when we hosted the family reunion and did a pig roast (125 people for 3 days) we had some local folks that contributed in some way or other come join us and we had some friends that just came and worked their butts off helping out. That can be a big part of the fun.

Hillsdale College would be an outstanding choice of school.
They have held the presidential debates there
I can't remember but it might have been a CNN watch party
Hillsdale is one of the few I'd not have much in the way of philosophical problems with paying tuition money to anymore.  It's not the right choice for a lot of people but if it has the field of study your kid really wants, IMHO, it's tough to beat.
We shall see what happens.  Thing 1 might attend the community college for a year or two first.

It's that new math. ;D :D
The Ford museum sounds interesting. I have always been a student of his manufacturing concepts and design thought process which became the basis for the modern 'just in time', 'lean manufacturing', and 'Toyota method' which others took all the credit for but came from old Henry. Henry had some 'odd' social and political ideas, some were innovative and under appreciated I think, but some were not to my way of thinking at all. Because of the latter he was relegated in many ways to a footnote in history rather then one of the primary thinkers of the methods we use today to make things.
Anyway, I would like to go to that, but it's a little pricey for us fixed income folks. Perhaps and the way home. Maybe it will be a better selling season and we can splurge a little.

Yes, I spent a week there one day. No actually it was a week, back in the 80's we did a tool show in Detroit, but stayed across the river in Windsor (the border crossing took less than 5 minutes in those days). But as we would just be passing through, I might consider it. Henry had a big influence on my career.
Looks like they have several things in the complex besides the one place. Thanks Dan, I guess I will give it a closer look.

PatD and I were visiting friends in Port Huron in 1995 and also visited the Ford Museum.  It was a very worthwhile experience and it is huge.  :o

We wanted to visit Kellogg's but at that time it was closed for tours.  It "sorta" reopened from 1998 until 2007 but there are no tours available now.  Only virtual.

For those first timers coming from the east you should stop at Tony's I75 Diner for some Bacon, this has been discussed here in the past. You will also probably be going past a Cabelas store in MI, worth a stop if you have never been in one.

No, but we are trying to make sure we get a spot and encouraging others to do the same. ;D They have LOTS of vacancies now and I always read about guys scrambling to find a place, now is the time. And If you think about the pandemic issues, this is a good way to support a local family owned business. I am sure they have concerns about making a good season out of it. Just my point of view. I also know it makes the bosses life easier when he knows how many are committed. The three of us are doing long hauls, so I guess we just want to be sure.

I got that, I just couldn't resist.
I spent my time in NE Detroit over 30 years ago, and it was just a very long week. Not a great area, but a long time ago. Detroit has gotten worse from what I read. Dearborn is within Detroit from what I see on the map, but is SW of the city center. I have no idea what the area is like. No judgements here. But the $40/head cost to get in the museum kind of set me back a bit. It's not off the list, but I am thinking hard on it. On the way in I know me and will just want to get there, on the way home it might be a nice option. But I really would like to see some of the manufacturing history, that's my interest. He was a true genius.

If you have time, in addition to the museum and Greenfield Village, a tour of the Ford River Rouge plant is well worth it.  By the time I got there it was entirely dedicated to producing the aluminum based F-150s.  I assume that is still the case.  But at one time they would literally take in the raw materials for making a car at one end and finished cars would roll out the other.  I'm talking iron ore for the steel, sand for the glass, vats of latex sap for the tires, etc.  No more, but the history of that facility is really interesting.

Just for you guys thinking about going through the border crossings. DON'T!!!! last time I tried for the last pigroast it added about 4.5 hours to the trip sitting in the stupid lines to get through.
Yeah, in the high traffic areas you'd hit long wait times. I've always crossed between Ontario and MI at Saulte St Marie and never waited more than 20 mins. during the best of times. But that route doesn't make any sense for anyone in the US travelling. I never have any traffic the whole way except in Montreal and Ottawa and now Montreal can be by-passed altogether. Well, so can't Ottawa, but I usually lodge in Ottawa, and it has by favorite woodworking store. ;D

We did that at a family reunion at our house. I forget the platform we used, (skype?) it wasn't youtube, but it was a long time before they thought of zoom. I made like a little theater area in the corner of the yard, hung a sheet on the side of the shop for a screen, got a video projector and camera, and we had folks checking in from all over the country. It gave them a chance to se the yard, and kids running around, etc.
I still have that projector and could bring it if you like. Just have to check it out first.

I wasn't aware of that feature on you tube. These days it seems like zoom is the thing, been using it a lot in the past year, just had a session on Wednesday. For non-business (free) users, they put an hour limit on it, but you can do multiple sessions. We did our family reunion last summer on zoom and had a family member with a commercial account so we could run for several hours.
I can't keep up with the technology changes. It is neat though. I had a meeting last summer on zoom and I was milling that day and lost track of time, so I checked in with my phone from the mill through wifi. When they all saw the mill in the background I had to give them a tour of the setup. Who would have thought 10 years ago we would be doing stuff like that today?

Yea, I know. I hate Limbo. HATE IT

hey, party game.... :D ;)
I can't Limbo but I'll be there. This is my first time attending, can we bring toys aka chainsaws ???
There is another forum that has chainsaw get togethers that are loud with lots of sawing, this isn't that. The pig-roast is more like a family reunion where you get to meet the forum family to share stories and food.

I have a chainsaw that will work great on pork.  and my buddy Jim got this cask filled the other day.  I will try to bring it as well.  lots of great folks.  some whole families and kid friendly.  alcohol consumed in moderation.  good games, conversation, and occasional music.

I just came back to check on this thread and see if I missed anything new. While it was on my mind I went and checked the site availability at Hidden Hill Campground and see that there are 8 reservations in the the big weekend so far.
I can't wait until this comes together. Still holding out hope they will open the borders in time.

Thanks for reminding me that this is getting closer.  I'm looking forward to it very much.  I have little hope that they will open the border, but miracles happen.

Golly, as I plan the trip to attend the Pigroast, I can get a airplane ticket and lodging, but finding a rental car that doesn't cost more than the airfare is out of sight.

I could fly into Chicago or Detroit from Portland, however either way I would need a car to get to Clare and be able to travel to a hotel and back to the Pigroast for a couple of days along with side trips.  While getting a car generaly is not a problem, the agency's cut back their fleets months ago and have yet to restock.  It doesn't look good for this summer.

Not sure what I need to do.  I want to come but it is looking like a $1000 trip easily...?

I guess when no one was able to fly or travel.  the agencies sold off most of their cars.  My neighbor noticed the enterprise rental place was back up to 8 cars.  Might be able to plan a car pool for someone without a car full of family.

I must be getting old, the last two times I was on the forum I could not find this thread.
I have no excuse not to make it as I am only 2 hours away.
Yes Jeff I will bring bread, unless your diet does not allow.
Just put it on the calendar.

I'm still on the books for being there. I'm pumped! It'll be my first. I want to say something in addition, but this IS a family site, so I self censored.
