The local TV station news was doing a story on lumber prices vs land owner prices. FF member WDH was a good pick for them to interview.
Great pick!
Did he use a lot of big words? Lol
Can you get a link?
Perfect guy for it👍👍
I would like to see it.
We must break from this important story to bring you breaking news. Our star is denying this story....claims no knowledge of said interview.
I smell a cover up!!! We need a commission to investigate this!!!
popcorn_smiley popcorn_smiley
Maybe I should move this to another area that gets more attention? :D

He did good with his choice of words. Also showed him operating his tractor and feeding a planer.

WDH must be a bit like Chuck Norris, he scares his trees right past the Sawmill and kiln, and feeds them directly into the planer!
Now we're talking! We can all say we knew him before he was famous.
And he speaketh the truth. Government subsidized planting (CRP) helped to put us in this overabundance of harvest ready trees situation with little market value.
I believe dat were the boy
I'm always struck by how whenever a subject I am well informed on gets on the news, they definitely report on the subject in a way that you can tell they have no idea what they are talking about...glad they found Danny to bring some knowledge on the subject👍 I'm really not sure why the state forester is telling people to hold of on their harvest, it really does nothing to help the situation and when a pine stand down there is due for a thinning, it's time to get it done🤷🏽♂️

It's not so much that the trees have no value, it's that there isn't the processing infrastructure locally to go along with the production.
It's taken NZ about 100 years to get a fairly stable plantation pine system functioning. Where businesses will invest in sawmills / pulp and paper factories etc, because they are sure of supply for the next 30 years. Plus the infrastructure is all in place to export bulk logs.
Not all smooth sailing as markets change over time. A downturn in the US building industry caused a couple of companies problems as they were heavily into supplying the US market with D. Fir. The pandemic closed Chinese ports for a while and disrupted the export scene, but NZ went into lock-down soon after that, and by the time we went back to work it was business as usual. Another local mill was forced to close as they were set up to produce newsprint, and demand for that has plummeted. Mill has been sold to a consortium of new owners who have the capital to convert to packing cardboard, which is in more demand. They can make that investment because there is a 30 year supply of trees growing in the province. And people can replant because the mill is there and operating.
The Reporter was at my place for over two hours and I got 20 whole seconds of air time :D.
Good job Danny. That's the way it goes. I have been interviewed many times for the news and if they ask me 20 questions, one question will air on the news and usually not even my whole answer will air, but just the part that fits with the way they are promoting the story. The last time I was interviewed for the news was about someone finding a bunch of drug needles on the ground and bringing them to the fire house, where I threw them in the dumpster.

If they spelled your name and credentials right - that's good journalism.
Anything else they get right is a bonus. ;D
Well done Danny.
Maybe they will do an In Depth follow up on your magic tree smoother. :D
Yeah, you definitely get the impression that Danny the Tree Farmer just grows the trees up to harvestable size, runs them through the tree smoother, and turns them straight into a dining room table😂
Tree smoother :D. Hey, if it works, it works.
Good job Danny. They probably didn't understand all the big words he used in the rest of the interview. So they could only show what they could understand. It's not politically correct for them to confuse their audience. I'm going to sneak over there and see how that tree smoother thing works. I can sell most of the rolling stock and sawmills and just smooth it and sell it.
It is the mission of the media to confuse.
Never depend on the media to portray an accurate picture of what is really happening. The 'tree smoothing' process is a case in point here. The reporter obviously did not listen to Danny when he explained what he does, or didn't understand him, or didn't care. It's unfortunate they had Danny and a forester in the report, bath of whom could (and probably did) relay the accurate picture, but the reporter got in the way and chopped out the useful information.
Happens all the time. But Danny did a good job and was clear in what he relayed.
Maybe she used a dictionary, because here is how it defines the verb, plane.
Definition of plane (Entry 2 of 6) transitive verb. 1a : to make smooth or even : level. b : to make smooth or even by use of a plane. 2 : to remove by or as if by planing
So something that makes things smooth would be a smoother, right. :) :)
Congrats Danny, you did well.
I like the quote "Georgia has done one thing exceptionally well -- Georgia knows how to grow trees". I'm glad he didn't mention football. :D :D Roll Tide.
You've got to love the MSM ::)
You can't just blame the MSM. I've seen the same thing in industry trade magazines. I've seen logging magazines where the articles are obviously written by people who don't have a clue the problem is the intended audience does🤷🏽♂️
I'm only blaming them because of their obvious (unknowingly) slanted views of what they are reporting. If they only knew the truth.
I didn't mean to take this toward the media. Danny's nick name for years has been "BIG WORDS". Due to the amount of knowledge he has and enjoys sharing, due to his passion for wood. I'm confident that lady left there searching Google on half of what he said. Great job Danny.
Well done! They picked a knowledgeable person for the subject interview.
Thanks for the link!!
Now everyone will want a tree smoother like mine.

I spent a day with a reporter from the Wall Street Journal years ago showing them our operations. I sent him home with a "fact sheet" so our information was available in a concise form. The story that came out was flattering to our organization, but had a number of inaccuracies. At least I didn't look like a fool.
Wud
I asked her to please not make me look stupid. It is always a concern for sure.

You are so bad, very bad.
Glad I got mine when I did.
I invited Danny down a while back to be there when i cut some beautiful sinker logs . I just felt more comfortable with him there because of the value of the logs . It was a great day ,in fact any day you can spend time with Danny is a good time.
At the end Danny asked for a tour of the swamp ,i told them your heads will be smoking when you come back. They came back grinning and invited him back anytime.
We call him big word not because he is trying to impress but out of respect for his knowledge .
I was on the news last night, but it was a little more somber of a story. We had a large ski boat with 6 people on it run into a rock in the dark going way too fast for the darkness. One man died and 5 more with severe injuries. I was appointed by the fire chief to be interviewed by the news reporter.
Surely not a good reason to be on the news, Bill.

Absolutley!
Danny, I don't know how I missed this for nearly a month but it was good to see and hear you talking about forestry. I had also noticed quite a few references to the tree smoother on the FF for the past several weeks, now I know its origin. John and I are considering buying a bigger tree smoother. Did your on-site reporter have her Thesaurus or dictionary in hand to interpret your vernacular?
I was careful not to be too sesquipedalian with her :D.
You got me going to Google already this morning. :D
Ole Slider is going to struggle even saying that one.
Me too.
Found myself slowly trying to slowly sound that out - noT a chance. 😆
However, Google did give me a snappy little come-back word.
" Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is one of the longest words in the dictionary — and, in an ironic twist, is the name for a fear of long words. Sesquipedalophobia is another term for the phobia."
Blame @barbender (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1286) for that word, not me. He originally brought it up a while back on here, but I never forgot about it because it is such a cool word ;D.
A cool word from one of the Glaciated folks.
I like what you did there. 😆
Once you use a word a few times you can own it.
I don't remember ever using that one...I'm still trying to sound it out!😂
I've noticed many times, when I learn a new word, that I suddenly notice it everywhere. I'm sure it was there along, I just never noticed. Makes me kind of worry about what else I'm being oblivious to?😊
I went back and looked and I believe that @Dave Shepard (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=4240) is actually the guilty sesquipedalian party.
Bartender is innocent after all.

I thought we had a clear rule that foul language was not tolerated here on the forums. ;D I don't mind words I don't understand, but ones I can't pronounce, and therefore use later, are another matter. I think he was just obfuscating anyway.
I was at the Dr's office looking at my iphone and the tv station web site ran the tree smoother story again. WOW, the story has gone viral!

If it hits the news up here, well, then I'll file a note to let y'all know that it's gone Glacial too! 8)
You two have had something viral happen to you :).
Danny, I believe what we have here is a failure to communicate, or, pot and kettle.
