Forestry and Logging / Maintaining the state park loo...
Last post by livemusic - Today at 10:23:59 AM
Anyone know how state parks keep their 'look?' If you say 'state park look,' what does that mean? Seems to me it means no or very little understory. What is their reason for achieving this? Is it because a lot of the public likes to see trees but not brush or thick sapling growth?

How do parks maintain this 'look?' Do they use mechanical means or fire? Anyone have any insight on the 'state park look?' Funny, I google that term and get nothing. Maybe it is called something else? "State park like" also gets nothing.

Yes, standing dead for about 2 years. Is that what causes the grain to get brown and streaky like that?
I thought it was too far gone... bark was moldy underneath, sliming off the log when I tried to manipulate it. It landed with a thud, I figured it would make OK firewood once split and dried. Glad I've got 2 more logs of it!

Forestry and Logging / stihl 041 super mod with decom...
Last post by buckyboy - Today at 09:34:54 AM
Hello,

I am new to the forum and just wanted to share some pics of a rebuild that I recently completed. The rebuild was an early 041 av that I converted to a super and installed a decompression valve with success. I have never performed A mod quite like this and could
not find another example to follow so I just went with it and it turned out great. The 48mm cylinder and piston was purchased on eBay as were most of the saw and I just took my time and rebuilt the saw completely except the oil pump. There is a pic showing a small hole passing into the combustion chamber but not in the spark plug area where the pressure releases until the saw fires. Seems to run as good as my other 041 super and is pulling 150psi. Anyway just wanted to share, thank you for those who maintain this site and for those who share information here!  https://forestryforum.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=11087

I use spar urethan that has UV protection.  It will peel in a few years and be breached if the wood splits.   It is great to use on a flat surface, and then every few years, I run the piece through the magic eraser (planer).  and then refinish.

The mill has been down for a month. Couldn't order parts the first 2 weeks because someone stole 2 checks from my mail.
That's another story.
Waiting on parts now
Been doing firewood
I get tree service firewood, I have changed my set up to get faster at it. I have more work to do .
I don't have a log lift but I'm getting it done.

Well it's unusual that I am disagreeing with Don, this may be a first in fact, but if you put a finish on it, it will hold. My process is to mill, then air dry out of the sunlight. It turns brownish and dull, then I skip plane it and stick it in the rack. When I make something, I plane and cut it for the project and that brings the fresh color back. Once built I put a finish on it like polyurethane and although it may get darker, it will still be red. The sapwood turns a little more yellow, but still a nice contrast.

This particular box has a tung oil finish on it.
