Not even going to hit 60 here for at least the next week. Got 52 today, mainly clouds. Too cold for bugs. There was 4 swallows around. No blue birds yet. :-\

Can't complain here although frosty this morning (28*) but sprang back up
into the 60s under blue skies and just a light breeze for a change.
Got three cords of wood split with little blackfly nuisance over the last couple days.
Tree Swallows a plenty and a pair of bluebirds vying for a nest box. First Hummingbird today.
Fresh Asparagus within a couple days, things are looking up as usual this time of year.

That quote came about because of my manual mill.
I have 35į here.
@woodroe,I was above freezing when you had a frost. You must be in a low spot? I am up on a slight hill and can dodge the early and late frost.
I was out early in the morning with a sweat shirt on. Did not take long to warm up.

There is that 200 acre pond across the road, and the sandy river a few miles away so
yeah, kinda low being only 100' in el. above the pond and river.
Hoping these frosty nights go away soon because the Apple trees are wanting to blossom, 30* this morning.

Certainly a fire this morning. ;D There was some white frost in a low field below home, white as snow. Lighter frost here. It was 35F on the porch therm., but on the ground it can be colder for sure. I think it might be 52F now. Saw a bear in a field and 2 grouse out in  the plantation I'm measuring. Cold NE wind. fire_smiley

Pretty sour the rain hasnít completely knocked off yet, around 42 here so itís a cold rain, really the only weather I wonít work in. Despite it Iím forcing myself out to get some work done. Suppose to be sunny later but that means hoards of black flies, canít win, lots of brush moving and ripping balsam growth up as itís everywhere.

SD, Iím looking into clearing saws, they are pricey! Iím going to go with a stihl for sure. Any recommendations? The area I am currently pulling balsam is sort a ďornamentalĒ part of my land, slopped area, nice pond big white pines , oaks and a few undergrowth hemlocks I planted. Cleaning the ground up completely in this spot as you can see it when driving up the lane way. Usually I donít bother with balsam until itís waist height then I will use loppers, small chainsaw etc.

You probably don't need to pro model for cottage work. The FS360 should be fine. I wouldn't drop down to the brush cutter models. ;)

This isn’t cottage work, this is 150 acres lol and will be a life long “project”, in the last 6 months I’ve managed to thin roughly 25 acres (maybe even more I’m not sure I haven’t stopped)since I’ve had the time. This won’t continue beyond after this summer as I will be busy with work. But I plan to take a couple months(broken up)each year to manage the woodlot

By all means get the FS560, and walker to'er. :D

I've thinned all my ground once, now doing it the second time taking out the firewood. This time by chainsaw. ;D Around 70 acres here.

How long will that take you suspect? Even making ground on a acre on my land is tough as itís so thick and lots of blow down cleanup. Lots of firewood though, enough for 5 year at least so far

Well on what isn't touched out there yet and on the good ground, there's 30 - 40 cord to the acre and I only take 6-8 cord a year off 2 acres a year. So we're looking at at least 25 years. I'm still not done within 200 feet of the road and this is year 4. I also thin some small stuff as I go and knock down snags as I go so they don't end up on me. I dropped about 10 dead popple snags today and had some sound but wood on 2. :D  I also found an old root cellar behind an apple tree near the old road. Some old bricks laying near by. Late 1800 homestead there. I knew the old house as a kid, dad kept a horse there when yarding wood. I know this is not the house, it was mud floor and no hole under it. It's on old abandoned field, forested now, but was logged in 1994.

Do you happen to have a thread you have created following your progress on your land? Would be interesting in seeing pictures.
Iím hoping to have gone over at least 50íscres by the end of the summer, Iíve been hammering down all fall all winter and thus far all spring, winter was horrible, fingers and feet frozen everyday, snow falling down my neck etc. Made it through though, sure glad I did it, thereís never a super good time to do it anyway , itís always something like too cold, too hot, bugs, etc. I just said heck with it and worked rain snow or shine and itís always hard work and ainít getting younger lol
