Hey guys, I need a stat for the disclaimer on our weight calculator. What is the correct answer for this Statement:

Where the board is cut from the tree is another factor, the heartwood portion of the tree (the center portion, often characterized by a change in color) is composed of dead cells and will be LIGHTER OR HEAVIER  than the sap wood, where the cells are still living.

Try this out from my Wood Tech book:

"Because of the extractives, heartwood is generally somewhat heavier than sapwood at the same moisture content.  On the other hand, green sapwood, especially in softwoods, may be heavier because of much higher moisture content (often up to 200 per cent based on the ovendry weight)."

Pretty vague. :P

Ron's statement is fine without getting too technical and keeps it generic. The butt log wood is also heavier. Moisture content is primary factor of weight. Also species differences that get in to wood densities etc.
