Title: Solar eclipse April 8
Post by: woodroe on March 16, 2024, 09:04:06 AM
Big event for some.
Lodging along the total eclipse area all but sold out
in this state.
We are about a 20 min. ride south of the total eclipse zone so close enough for us. About 2 min black out about 2 pm here.
Cuts a big swath across the country.

We are right in the path also and supposedly going to be overcrowded.  They say power could  be an issue with all the solar going down in the middle of the day.  :sunny:

We are right in the middle of the total eclipse and thankfully I'll be working out of town at the time.  My goal is to stay as far away as possible.

Going to be pretty much ground zero here. Not a big deal to me, saw one in 1984 wasn't a big deal then either, but was an annular one.  :sunny: Chances are it will be raining or snowing here anyway.  ffcheesy All on hydro power here, won't miss a beat.

April is a low electrical demand season, heating demand is low and cooling is non existent. Its not that hard to deal with predictable events like an eclipse, a lot harder when something like a big transmission line goes down by surprise. Something like an EMP from a solar event is a lot harder to deal with, that is what took a big chunk of Quebec province in 1989.  March 1989 geomagnetic storm - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_1989_geomagnetic_storm)

I live just south of the path of totality in northern NH, at best the weather forecast is 50/50 for clouds, at worst 70/30. The hassle is that if the forecast is good a bunch of people will head north out of southern New England and I 95, I 93, I91 and I 80 can only handle a certain amount of traffic. In general its going to be combination of Memorial Day plus Labor Day traffic. It late on a Monday so folks may head up early but few if any campgrounds are open yet. Snowmachine season will be over but ATV season will not have started yet.  Folks usually find a dirt road into the local national forest and set up a tent but those roads are gated. On the other hand, Monday night everyone is going to be wanting to get home. I 91 in Fairlee VT is down to one lane southbound so that is going to be a parking lot. Some towns are setting up with big events but they were booked out months ago. Reportedly there is not a porta potty available in the region. Just make sure your gas tanks are full as all those cars are going to need to fill up when they get here or heading home.

We're in the direct path. I guess I'll start locking the gate beginning on the 6th or so. It's also Lindy's birthday so we'll celebrate that too.

Pretty rare for northern NH but its looking like a sunny forecast for eclipse day and the weekend before it. My guess are lots of folks are going to be heading north. Forecast for late week is big rain/snow event so it will be interesting to see where everyone parks.

We are only supposed to get 3 minutes of total eclipse  ffcheesy.  Right in the middle of my nap time.  They have closed schools and have big shindigs scheduled for 3 minutes  O0 of darkness.  Now they say bring your pets inside so they don't  stare at it and go blind 😲.

I think the eclipse of 1970 was the one that made the greatest impression on me. Schools were out.  We went to my Mom's folks house where Granddad had made several viewing shadowboxes we could pass amongst the cousins. The chickens started roosting, the cows were befuddled. The moon shot had not been even a year. We had lots of rockets back then, Wallops Island sent up a couple of dozen to check out everything in the atmosphere. There have been more but that is the one that made a real impression. Like most kids of that time, I was ready to go see some space  ffsmiley.

The partial eclipse a few years ago messed up the chickens big time, going to be interesting to see how they all act this go round.

The first one I remembered was the annular one in 1984. Was not quite all covered by the moon, but wasn't much fringe light left. Was still in school and of course we got the 'don't look at it without protection' speeches. I don't know how humanity could have survived so long without 'experts' telling us not to look. What I do remember being told was that it was similar to a welder's flash. You won't feel the burning itch in your eyes until the next day. Of course my brother tried welding without a welder's helmet and found out the next day.  ffcheesy ffcheesy

Its been 60 years since the last total solar eclipse here in this area. July 20, 1963.
I remember it pretty well. Was 6 years old , folks loaded up the kids in the family car
and we went to a large open area a few miles away, viewed it through a homemade
viewing device my dad made.

I still have the shoebox viewer I made for the 2017 eclipse here.

The current forecast for Northern NH is sunny Sunday and Monday with 18 to 24" of snow just south of the band of totality a few days before. Possibly 12" in the path. Mud season means the frost is coming out of the roads, so the towns try to underplow the road so they dont take up the gravel or pavement. My guess is lots of money to be made with tow strap pulling cars out of ditches.

Maybe I should post this in the Wake Up Call for Green Energy...

My son and I took the 10-12 hour ride up to Oregon/Idaho area to see the 2017 eclipse that gave us a little over 2 minutes of totality. Awesome.

Then started planning for this one. Four and a half minutes of totality! Leaving for Texas tomorrow in my son's new Tesla model 3. Taking my sister and will be staying at her youngest daughter's house just NW of Dallas. Looks like scattered showers on the long range forecast  smiley_thumbsdown but we'll make the best of it.

First night we'll stay in another sister's place in Kingman, AZ.  From there, we're going to hit the Grand Canyon on the way out and stop in Winslow, AZ and a few more places along the way. Three, maybe four days driving each way.

Not many trees in AZ and NM, so don't imagine too many FF members to visit along that route.

I'm in the path of totality at my house and I'm pretty excited. It looks like, as of now, we'll be getting most of the rain and clouds out of the way this week. I think they are calling for partly cloudy on Monday.

I've invited a bunch of people over to watch but nary a single rsvp... We'll see if that continues, and oh well if it does.

My son was over for supper with us yesterday.  He works on the maintenance crew of a large state park near here.  He told me the park managers are in a panic over how many visitors the park is expecting as it is in the path of totality.  Which I suppose must be a cool way of saying you can see it from there.

The maintenance guys are only worried over parking. With all the rain the ground is wicked soft and folks will be getting stuck.

Probably be raining Monday and nobody will see a thing.  As for myself I'd trade away a ring side seat in the "path of totality" for a few days of dry weather with out a second thought so I could get some logs on the landing.

Yeah, according to the long range Sunday through Wednesday that week is wide open skies here. And the path is right over head of the house. We are going to get another rain/snow storm for 2-1/2 days before though. Been one of them storms every week for a month now.  In the middle of building the shop here, so maybe we can celebrate that to. ffcheesy

Same here.  We are in a fairly rural  area and have been told to fill the cars with gas a couple  days before because too many vehicles can cause shortages plus we have no EV recharging stations locally that will be an issue should visitors use EVs.  I'm just  going  to set the camera  up outside and watch it on my big screen  TV  :sunny:.

Up in Northern NH, I am not too worried about law enforcement writing tickets, they are going to be tied up with all the normal crap that happens when lots of clueless folks head north in mud season. The forecast is for sunny and warm for April. I hope everyone has a good time but expect it is going to be a slow ride south.

That kind of mongering went on in the 80's to, was all debunked back then. We had an eclipse and one year a so called lining of the planets was going to cause weather events and geophysical catastrophes and on and on. The media will say anything if you pay them enough. They'll find any darn fool to gibber jabber, gobbley gook at a mic. Pretty much what James Randi concluded about them years ago. You don't want to know what his term was for them. Well I can't type it on here. What I get a kick out of is "America's Solar Eclipse Event" across the tv screen.  What did you guys do now? ffcheesy

I find the hype beyond humorous, almost pitiful. Out (NYS) governor has joined in the hysteria. She has banned all roadwork throughout the entire state from Saturday to Tuesday in order to minimize traffic delays. Now how many folks do you think are driving through Long Island to see the eclipse? Traffic down there is always a mess anyway, who's gonna notice the difference? She's an idiot with idiot advisors.

A lot of hype here in VT, banks are closing early, daycares are shut down ,state police and emergency staff warning of traffic grid lock, it a big todo for 2 1/2 minutes I guess I'm just not that into it, followed by some reporters blaming global warming for the cloudy or unclear view as we had 18+ inches of snow dump today I'm sure it will be neet but  I've seen a lot of awesome scenery in my few years here on earth,so for one to be all jazzed up for a view thats blacked out I just soon pull one out of the memory bank and over ride the one that's coming

Totality is scheduled for around 4:33 pm local time here on Monday. Will start to see the effects around 3:30 as the moon starts passing by. Nobody I know of thinks it's anything to get excited about. I have some young neighbors here that have probably never seen an eclipse, I've not asked them what they think. Actually the earth is flat but the Weather Bureau is in charge of all of this celestial stuff which includes stars, planets, earth, sun, and the moon.  They make rainbows, wind, rain, sunshine, clouds, and even tornadoes.  They made daylight saving time just to screw up our clocks so that we would have to contact them to determine the time.  They invented and sell windmills and solar panels so that we would be forced to use their stuff.  This eclipse thing is all of that guy Musk's idea because he is actually their front man.  We are puppets on a string.  :wacky:
Title: Re: Solar eclipse April 8

The eclipse of 1919 was used to verify Einsteins theory of relativity. With just the corona they could determine that indeed the mass of the sun bends the light of stars as it passes by.
Another cool one I heard on Science Friday on the radio in the shop, it is just a happy coincidence that the moon is 1/400th the size of the sun and is 400 times further from the sun than earth so we just happen to get a total eclipse of the sun by that diameter of the moon. The moon is slipping away from us at a couple of cm per year so at some point in the distant future there will still be eclipses, but they will be annular rather than total.

.. ,more is coming back. The Babylonians were the first to figure out the eclipse cycle although China and the Aztecs kept good records of events. The inhabitants of Chaco canyon drew what some people have figured was art related to an eclipse on their cliff walls. Scientists have tracked back and there was a total eclipse during that period that coincided with a solar maximum. Some of what they are seeing in the drawings may be details they were seeing of the lunar surface/edge lit by the corona.

My sweetwife came home with glasses and the schoolkids will be off for the event so she won't have to garden in the dark with preoccupied younguns. I had set the pair from 2017 on the shelf here knowing I would hopefully need them again for this one, but must have cleaned up at some point.

Make lots of noise, we need to make the toad eating the sun throw it up

They have been booked for this weekend for quite awhile. Its pretty early in the season for us to get bookings, usuually may-late october is normal. And.... Ironically we got a foot of snow for the campers to enjoy  :sunny:
The first campers showed up last night. Since they couldn't drive to the site (it's down in one of the pastures) they took all their gear in via toboggan.  ffwave their car is still here this morning,  figured the overnight snow and low temps would have made tent camping pretty crummy? Guess we shall see if they make it til Monday. I don't think the snow is going anywhere haha.

True love is sleeping with the wine bottle in your bag to keep it from freezing ffcheesy .

Apparently just before totality a series of shadow bands cross the surface of the Earth. Nobody knows why. Some students in TX are sending up balloons to different levels in the atmosphere, up to 90,000 ft. They are looking to see if it is caused by our atmosphere or if the shadow bands are coming in through space. Perhaps light bending around the edge of the moon as the sun is down to a sliver over the edge of it. I've not noticed them before, I think we are too far off to the side to see something like that this time.

Watched it using my welding helmet with my daughter and wife.  As I had messed around with telescopes and sidereal time, I was able to draw my daughter a diagram of what was happening and why the crescent of the sun was to the side and then moved to the bottom.

Another thing I noticed was that all the birds stopped chirping for about 10 minutes thru the peak time of the eclipse.  We also had clouds passing through and sometimes you could view the eclipse through the clouds without dark eye protection.

Just another workday today. I cut and loaded logs in the morning until 1pm, came home and dumped them off. Had a quick lunch and headed to town on errands. When I crossed over the reservoir as the eclipse was beginning I noticed (could not miss them) a mess of people parked up in all the reservoir  parking areas sitting in lawn chairs with paper sunglasses on watching the eclipse. I could not help but laugh out loud. Maybe it was the way they were dressed, or the place they chose, which was rather poor, but it just looked stupid to me. I did notice a LOT less traffic on the road and it was creepy. Did my shopping (paint, 2 cycle oil, cheap paintbrush, etc.) and headed home. I started working on putting a new and much larger battery in mu Mule. I did take a few quick peeks thru my welding helmet and yeah, it looked cool, but I got back to work. It was just not that big of a deal at 95% totality.
BUT what I DID notice was just after we passed the peak point, a bunch of owls started sounding off. That was weird. It didn't last long, but it was still weird.
Tomorrow will be another day, in spite of the rumors.

I had a commitment to unload a load of logs today. Got them unloaded with just enough time that I could drive about 60 miles to the eclipse totality zone and the sky looked clear. I have seen two eclipses already and they were just ho-hum but I was not in the totality zone. With that background I wasn't really excited, but the viewing spot I was targeting was in the headwaters of the Buffalo National River and I never miss a excuse to get in that area.

I threw the camera in the truck but didn't have any real intentions to take pictures so left all the rest of the gear at home.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10125/DSC_8910.JPG) (https://forestryforum.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=353369)
I was absolutely amazed. The sky slowly darkened like on a cloudy day but when we hit totality it went completely dark in a few seconds. I could see Venus and a couple of stars. Next I saw Baily's Beads than the diamond ring. I ran back to the truck to get the camera and snapped a couple of poor pictures. I really wished I had setup with the tripod and my gear. At the beginning there was a pretty good cool breeze but it stopped right before totality.

Before I headed out to the eclipse I found a online topographic map that showed the totality zone. Click on the spot your at and it gave a time of totality. I sat my phone alarm and sure enough the alarm went off right when the sun got covered. Smart guys, I'm impressed.......

I'm surprised neither "Night of the Comet" nor "Apocalypto" were being shown on TV the last couple days.  Well we didn't get vaporized from the Eclipse, but maybe anyone watching was radiated, and once we go to sleep, we won't wake up, and in the morning we'll look like  Lieutenant Stewart who died in her sleep pod from the beginning of Planet of the Apes?

Yeah, it was pretty cool when it was dark and you could see a couple brighter stars or planet in the sky. We have a lot of crows around here and they never acted strange at all. Kept on like normal, the usual crowing and flitting about the yard. My brother said if it is too bright to look at then why don't deer have shades on? I said looking directly into the sun is a human curiosity thing. A deer is looking for something to eat, or an escape from a predator. Not looking and walking with it's head cocked up almost vertical. I said I remember someone thought that he didn't need welding glasses/helmet one time and he burnt his eyes. I thought it was really neat. In Dayton my party turned out well with about 15 of us checking it out, including a baby. It's amazing when it hit 95%+ covered how much the light changed, the temperature dropped, and it got a bit windy. As it went to 100% things went quite calm and dark and weird! We were able to see the prominences (? solar flares?) and that was pretty cool too. All in all, time well spent watching space and nature in action.

I will not defend the possibility of the photoshopping but will comment that up on mountain in Northern NH, it really did not get that dark during totality. It definitely was dark overhead with Venus and Jupiter visible and dark in the direction the eclipse was traveling but looking off to the north or south it was still quite bright out. I think the difference was that the horizon from the top of the mountain to either side was as much as 100 miles.
