Title: Official 2018 15th annual PiGROAST RSVP topic.
Post by: Jeff on June 04, 2018, 04:09:00 PM

15th Annual Forestry Forum Pig Roast August 3 & 4th, 2018!
Yesterday we ordered the pig and the port-a-potties (MEN'S and LADY'S!) so that means it is time to start getting a count for the pigroast. :)

Once again, I'd like to take a moment and encourage, that this year, if you have been meaning to come, but keep telling yourself " I'll make it next year", Make it this year! No one knows what the future holds, and as I get deeper in this life, I'm beginning to get a fuller understanding of that. We should grasp each moment like it is the last and celebrate it!  Now, on to the details!

Remember this is a family event. We have a pool for the kids and when we know there is going to be a group, we plan activities to include them. So, if ya got em, BRING EM!  :D

You are not required to rsvp to attend, but we sure would appreciate it if you think there is a good chance you are coming to add your number of attendees to our count. This gives us a good idea on what to expect and also gives incentive to others to come. You can always retract if you need to, but you won't  ;) :).

Area Motels (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+lodging&hl=en&ll=43.995778,-84.92981&spn=0.51866,1.344452&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=lodging&hnear=Harrison,+Clare,+Michigan&t=m&fll=43.995778,-84.92981&fspn=0.51866,1.344452&z=10)

Area Camping (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=48625+camping&hl=en&sll=43.919529,-84.736322&sspn=1.038641,2.688904&hq=camping&hnear=Harrison,+Michigan+48625&t=m&z=11)

I strongly recommend getting opinions on hotels or motels in the area from us or other members that have come to the pigroast. There are a handful that turn up on those google maps that we will strongly advise against. There are plenty of very good places to stay.

ITINERARY:
Friday, August 3rd, Set up day, visiting, pig prep, boiled dinner for supper! Bon fire. Swimming, more visiting
Saturday, August 4th, BISCUITS AND GRAVY breakfast at 8 a.m., Pig around noonish, followed by door prizes and visiting.

Please continue the count in your post. :)

More important than acquiring things is acquiring memories.  The pig roast has both.  But the memories are the best.  I will never forget the goose story told by Raider Bill.  Lots of other good memories of people met. Fooling WDH with a white, red cedar plank was priceless.  Fooling the best of the best  happens only once.
You get to acquire things too at the pig roast.  Lots of door prizes.  So the best of both acquiring worlds.
With that said, we will miss the roast this year.  We will be in Montana for 2 1/2 weeks. One week is the NSS convention.  I just can not be in 2 places at once.
I used the excuse of missing my first pig roast because I thought I needed to work at the mill.
I regretted that first miss and made up my mind that work would not interfere with making great memories.

The fat olde elf is very grateful to be #21 !! As some of you know starting on October 17 2017 I had a blowout in my upper aorta. A great surgeon patched that up with Gortex. 3 days later I had a stroke. Cardio intensive care unit is a good place to have a stroke.  4 days later they called my wife at 9:30 PM to tell her that they had lost me for over 5 minutes, no pulse...They got me back to life, somebody up there likes me, I spent a total of 30 days in cardio intensive care and 14 days in rehab where they taught me how to stand up from sitting in a chair, how to walk, how to swallow and how to pee in a urinal.  I went home on November 30 and the visiting nurse came by for a while.

I started driving mid-December but I am still on restrictions for lifting.  I have started my mill every week and am shopping for a tractor with an FEL.Last week I completed a long stint in Cardio Rehab, more pretty nurses.  I recently saw a summary of charges for $488,000 on my case. Thank God for medicare and supplemental coverage by the NC Department of Corrections. Bonnie and I celebrated 57 years of married bliss in January  She was with me for all 44 days in the hospital.  I turn 81 on June 22.   Can't wait to start making sawdust soon.  Hope to see all of you at the Pig Roast.    Paul E. The nicest would be in Clare, the
Doherty Hotel (http://dohertyhotel.net/)

There is a very nice bed and breakfast if they still have rooms, The Carriage House Inn.
Carriage House Inn restored, open for business | The Clare County Review (http://www.clarecountyreview.com/news/carriage-house-inn-restored-open-for-business/)
This is within shouting distance of our house if you yell real loud.

My wife Stephanie, our son Jesse James, and myself makes 75.

Does anyone have suggestions on a good R.V. park with electric hookups (50amp), plenty of shade, and maybe a place for Jesse to do some fishing?

It is with deep regrets that i say that Mrs. Beaver and I will not be able to make the Pig Roast this year. I am scheduled for my gastric sleeve surgery on August 13 and we have quite a bit of orders to get out between now and that date so that i can take a few weeks to recover from the surgery without being forced to get back at it too soon. Will miss and be thinking of you all.

The guitar is on it's way to Sheepkeeper.  He'll be bringing it to the Roast where the draw will take place.

The only sound clip I managed to record.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=x6Lq3DLI1XA (https://youtube.com/watch?v=x6Lq3DLI1XA)

I think I did mention that I ran out of time with this.  I would have liked a couple more weeks to work some more on the finish, but it is what it is.  Certainly nothing wrong with how the instrument sounds, but it could use some more coats of finish.

The plan was to give that other guitar, which had a flawless fit and finish. But dropped the darn thing as I hung it up to dry.

I was hoping to surprise myself and all assembled by sneaking up to the PR this year.  Had a wonderful time in my previous visit.  But alas, with the entire family together at our cabin in Canada, I will not be able to make it.  It will happen again, I make that a promise, but not this year.  Everyone have fun and carefully tilt one back for me.....

Good Afternoon!

Just in case someone attending the Pig Roast, would like a Forestry Forum hat...I wanted to let everyone know that I will be bringing a selection of Forestry Forum hats to the Pig Roast. Yep, the Red Plaid also.

If I don't have the hat you want in the selection, I will be happy to take your order.

The Forestry Forum will receive a 10% donation per hat sold.

Thanks,

Kitty

Well......the count has to go back down to 79.  The wife and I can not make it due to a HUGE financial offer that was dumped into our laps last Saturday night while we were attending my 48th class reunion.  We just can't pass this up and can not afford to be out of town.

Will tell you guys all about it when it "closes."

Yes, we know if it's too good to pass up.......and yes we are taking steps to protect ourselves.

After a relaxing day of visiting my dad up north in Charlevoix I got home to prep and bake a couple loaves of my No-Knead Bread.

It just came out of the oven and it going to be hard not to put a knife too it.

I just got back from the pigroast, I won a beautiful model replica of jeff's forestry forum truck, what a great idea and what a nice gift.  The most fun was watching the kids come up and win a prize.  Jeff and his family really come up with some great ideas for their pigroast every year.  All of their family and volunteers work so hard every year, its really the best pigroast year after year.  Thanks Jeff and family and everyone who helps out and who attends, another great event.

I too, would like to express our appreciation for a well- thought out (and executed) event.
This was our first Pig Roast; we met many FF Members, a few FF "Legends", and shared smiles with even more. We had very good food, and also shared in the Door Prizes (While I didn't win my heart's desire, I managed to please both my wife and daughter with the prizes I did win....), including that wonderfully crafted Cedar Swing made by Yukon.
All in all, we had a great time, and can't thank Jeff and family enough.
Our prayers are with you all who are travelling to arrive safely at your destinations.

It is just amazing how great the people of this forum are. The sponsors and members are so generous to bring all the awesome door prizes. The food was great along with all the conversations through the day.

Wow! What a great time Jill and I had at our first of hopefully many more pig roasts. First and foremost we'd like to thank Jeff, Tammy and family for putting on such a great event. My hat's off to you all. A special thanks is also in order for each and every sponsor and individual that donated all the great door prizes and giveaways.
I was honored to be recruited 8) by "MagicMan" and "WDH" to help cut up the hog and do a little quality control to make sure it was just right for everyone to enjoy. Thanks guys, what a grin ;D.
Thank you to the group of ladies that took Jill under their wings while I was locked in on learning about Mr. Truck from Jeff.
Yukon, have a safe trip back to the "Show Me State" and I want to see a picture of those bright new suspenders on your bunker pants.
I also want to thank "Rooster" and Council Tools for the great door prize. I'll put the axe to good use after I put a good edge on it like you showed me how to do.
We had a wonderful time meeting all the members and their families and look forward to next year.
Until next time, thank you all.

Chris and I made it home safely.
Our plan was to overnight in Niagara falls but between a polo game and the Canadian long weekend there were no vacancies. So we rode an hour past the falls, stopped for a break and called hotels an hours ride ahead. No vacancies.
We repeated this over and over until around 4 am when we decided to just go for it and run for home.

Soo 20 hours and 820 miles later we made it home.

Great seeing everyone. I'll post some pix later when my hands wake up. They are pretty number right now. ;D

Yes, the Blueberry Wafflecone Ice Cream was just as good as it looks.  cone_1 food6

Our trip home was not uneventful.  We stopped Sunday evening for Supper and when we got ready to go, the car would not go.  The battery had died.  It was so dead that I had to use the fob key to even open the door.  I then tried to crank the engine but it only clicked.  Luckily there was a WalMart within a quarter of a mile so I took a stroll.  A nice gentleman heard me getting the battery and gave it and me a ride back to the car.  Thankfully there was a "Metric" Crescent wrench in the tool bag so the replacement went smoothly.

I called the dealer this afternoon and he said that it would be replaced under full warranty.  :)

Again, Thank You Jeff and Family and all of the Sponsors that made this Event the success that it was.  Also Thank You fellow FF Members, many that I met and sadly some that I did not get to meet.  That's a good enough reason to already start planning for next year.  August 3, 2019.  :)

I would guess (judging from the not great photo) to be aspen.  A clue as where in the US (assuming) it was found would certainly help!

Here is a question and an answer:
Can you name a list of things that it took to give the chainsaw away this year?

1. An old grill rotisserie motor
2. A blue tooth speaker
3. A big fake rock.
4. A hundred foot of rope.
5. A hundred feet of para-cord.
6. A big pulley from a snow mobile junkyard.
7. A small pulley
8. A 6' by 10' American flag.
9. An old cassette recorder
10. A Wood-Mizer potato chip bag clip two 5/16s bolts and 12 feet of wire.
11. 200 ft of extension cords, one highly modified.
12. 120 Tootsie Pop suckers.
13. A strange mind.

Linda and i both got valuable door prizes, a box of WM double hard blades apiece.
She cant wait to use hers.
Checked with Jack at Hannibal and I can pick them up there.
It is only 50 miles and will make a nice short day trip with a long lunch for Linda and I.
Glad everyone is home safe so far.

Got home to NC Tuesday night after visiting non-Forum friends in MI.
Really enjoyed my 14th Pig Roast with old friends and new friends. Glad to see 100 plus folks and really missed Cedarman, Custom Sawyer and others....Many thanks to Jeff, Tammy, and family !!!  Looking forward to next year already.  I meet with my surgeon and cardiologist in a few days when I anticipate being released to resume making sawdust after over 9 months off. Say me some prayers. I need all the help I can get.....Thanks again to Brandy for the bands, sweet girl to help an old geezer. Fat Olde Elf PS Chet, Bonnie and I have you in our Methodist prayers....

Here's a pic of the finely crafted (no, the one on the left.....) work of art that Yukon Cornelius donated as a Door Prize. I was fortunate to have won this item, and we treasure it. I'm constructing a frame this weekend, so we can enjoy it as intended.
Big thanks to Jeff, Tammy, Family- and all Sponsors and Members who donated Items.

Kitty and I finally arrived at home from the Pig Roast.  We drove really, really, really slow...  :D

Actually we took the scenic route when we left Jeff's place.   We went north into the UP, then across Wisconsin. Minnesota and into South Dakota where we visited with my long lost daughter and participated in the Sturgis motorcycle rally.    Total miles driven on the truck pulling the camper were 4007 move_it, plus another 1000 or so on the Can Am Spyder  bike_rider sightseeing around Sturgis.   We checked off a couple bucket list items such as Mount Rushmore  thumbs-up , Devil's Tower  Montana  smiley_devil, and of course the bike rally in Sturgis smiley_mad_crazy.

I took a lot of photos while at the Pig Roast and think I should have captured everyone that was there.  Rather than spend an entire day posting them to this thread, I put them in an album in my gallery.   You can find all of them here:

Enjoy.

Yup she got me a box of 15 "Turbo 7° Blades".  She is a good woman.   :)

Thanks again to Wood-Mizer and all of the other Sponsors that help make the Forestry Forum the valuable Go-To site that it is.  :P

This string could use some beauty in the pic (I mean of her...) after I had to post one of me.

got a email they got the order for my blades today.  The way woodmizer and logrite  support the forum and the pigroast I would feel guilty looking anywhere else for milling supplies.

I haven't mailed my coupon off yet. I put it in my wallet at the Pig Roast and it's still there gathering dust. Will have to wait until I get back home now. Wonder if I can scan it and email it to them?

I also would like to follow up with a pic of one (actually two...) of my prizes (You all don't need to see some of that good Vermont Maple Syrple, which I also won- on a Pancake).
On August 10th, I posted a pic of some ugly guy standing next to a very nice Cedar Swing. I finally completed the Frame and got it mounted. We've all taken it for a spin, and we love this piece of art that is also a great vehicle to enjoy leisure time.
In this case, Yukon Cornelius donated this item. Thanks Larry and all FF Members and Sponsors that donated to this great event. Thanks again for putting this together, Jeff, Tammy and Family.
BTW; If you are the donor of the Vermont Maple Syrup, please IM me. Nothing negative; We love it, but I would like to thank you personally, and ask your opinion on something....
