I enjoy watching a lot of the forestry videos.  Thought you guys might like to see how us arbo's do it.  I took out 14 trees along this property line.  Crane was used to preserve understory "trees", lawn, two houses, a fence, and power lines.  I was climbing and running the aerial lift, a friend and his crew cut down the tops and chipped them with my truck and chipper.  These three trees created one, over full log truck.  I didn't even bother try hauling them with my loader as it would have been to many trips.  About three hours in two minutes.

Awesome! I like the way the tops disappeared into the chipper like they were being devoured by ants. :D Any nice timber logs in there?

I thought there might be some good ones, but nothing really worth taking.  They were about 36" at the base so moving them in any decent size wasn't happening with my loader.

I got a small handful of good logs from the other 11 trees, disappointing.

I still need to get Peter out here to mill up my other pile of Pine and Tulip.  Problem is the blizzard brought 8' snow piles back there.

Cool video!
Looked like you got caught riding the crane and had to bring in a cherry picker :o I think hitching a ride from the crane feels safer.

No trouble with riding the crane here.

It's easier taking trunk wood from standing in the aerial lift than it is sitting there on spikes.  Thats why I pulled the bucket in.

Brendonv,

I ride crane line too, much, much, safer.  Seen so many folk get bang by inexperienced crane operators.  They don't mean to, their learning, but if your on the line, there is no chance of that.  If your in the bucket, or worse, the stick, those little taps, or rough releases can really shake things up!!!  I won't use a crane that I can not ride the line, tree or bent lift.  I have heard rumores that OSHA was cracking down on when and how.  Have you heard anything?

OOPS, my bad.Still a very cool video.

I've heard you can only ride when you and the operator decide the tree is not strong enough to support the weight of the climber.  But not sure how often that rule is followed, or if in fact it's truth.

I have heard, and believe you are able to ride the crane as long as the crane is not bearing any weight of the tree.  its either holding the climber or the tree, never both.  From what I have learned, if a tree is too weak or dangerous to climb then there would need to be one crane for the climber and one for the wood.. That is if the bucket cannot reach the area.

I am newer to the climbing side of things, but from the conferences I have sat in on, that's what I learned...

Cool Video by the way!

I showed this video to my girlfriend and she says "He's like a tree spider! I wanna be a tree spider!" Nice video BTW. I like the POV videos with the GoPro helmet cams the best. I shows the action up close and personal.

brendonv

Thanks.

Gopro's are fun.  I'm not into POV as I get really bored watching, and the unsteadiness drives me nuts.  Editing takes way longer too.  The vid you saw was time lapse, I think a photo every 5 or 10 seconds.  Then I sped it up.  Took 5 minutes to edit.   :D

These were todays trees before lunch.  Both were about 24" dbh hemlock.  Will use the logs for siding most likely.
