Today's happy customer came over to pick up a 5' piece of red oak for a shelf. When she saw (in person) the one she picked out from facebook marketplace, she decided it was too thick at 1 7/8". So I found her a piece 1 1/2" thick.

I had a bunch of left over 1" boards from the standing dead pine that I saw up to make some 1x18's for another order.
These leftovers had blue stain, rot, and some bug holes.
A lady stopped by to look at the 1x18's that were 7' long and leftovers from the order pieces.
She saw these low grade leftover boards and wanted them.
She wanted one natural edge and 10" wide.
So I cut some for her and I cut some extras in case she didn't like the quality of the pieces I picked out for her.
She loved them.
And we put them on her roof of her SUV to haul them home to make shelves .

During lunch today, she texted me that she wants three more 6' long, to match.

by the hour. he expected to pay me for a full hour at my previous rate of $75 but as it only took me 6 minutes, four of which we were talking about what he wanted, I only charged him $20

As we mentioned in the other thread, it's easier to just swap boots then to take the cleats on and off a set of boots. And I did that.
To put the cleats on it is easier to do it with the boots off.

All looks good. I even have ice issue around here. ::) Some are my own doing,as I suppose yours might be. I drive the tractor in the same place and it packs down the snow. Than things melt a little and the grooves fiil in with water and freezes. But just packing it down makes it bad too.
Yesterday's happy customer came over to pick up a single short piece of natural edge white pine board in the middle of a snow storm.
It was 1 inch by 10 inch by 18 inches for a sign over his natural edge home bar.

Today's happy customer got into his truck and was driving away when I remembered I needed a snap shot.
Well, anyway he got a 4" thick x 10" wide by 6' long one natural edge red oak mantle, fresh cut green.
He was happy once he understood what a natural edge was, as he couldn't figure it out over the phone or even with a texted picture of his piece.

And I have to say, yesterday's customers where not too happy. The wanted something that I didn't have. But I told them they could most likely get it from A&P sawmill in NH. And to call Pete Drouin and ask him first before they drove up there to see him.
They said they were going to try some more local places to see if they could find what they wanted.
They wanted some dry white pine 2x10x12s that were still white as fresh sawn. I told them that most likely they could find dry wood but it difficult to say if it is still white as fresh sawn wood.

My white pine tends to turn a little yellow or reddish when it dries. I never learned the trick of keeping it white during the drying process. If you learn how to do that let me know how.

Since last May I have been listing different pieces of wood on Facebook market place for sale. Many of these happy customers are market place sales. Some of them are people who call up and ask if I can cut some thing for them and if I can I usually do.
Current stats are 135 pieces of lumber sold with a gross of over $2400 just through marketplace since June 19th, 2018
I currently have 38 pieces of white pine and 18 pieces of red oak listed for sale on marketplace.
I am happy with the cash flow from marketplace sales.
And what is also happening is that they call or text me, that "this stuff is great, but can you do this for me instead?"

that is a pretty long ride for some pine. even if it was clear!
Folks will travel sometimes just for the enjoyment of the journey.
A couple of years ago, I decided to clean some "stuff" out of the back of the shed. There was an old stone boat that I got at an auction for $10 that I hadn't used for 20 years. It even had character with one busted board in the middle, so you had to just put rocks there that couldn't roll out. It did have a good steel front end. I put it on Craig's for $20, thinking I'd have some room to dicker.
Several days later a gentleman called me about it from way up in Eden. Beautiful country, but it is quite a ways from me. He said he wanted it, and would mail me a check. That he did, and I called him and said I would hold the stone boat until he could come.
Quite a while went by, but he eventually called me and said could he come down on such-and-such a date? Sure thing, I'll have coffee on if you want. The man and his Brother-in-Law arrived in a short box F150, and after we visited, he decided we could load it up. Ten foot stone boat, plus 18-20" of steel on the front. By now, the BIL was trying not to burst out laughing. I didn't know what that was about, but it was finally decided I should cut the front off, and he would just take that home. Probably $20 was still less than it would cost to make that 30" wide, upturned piece of 3/8" plate with a rod welded around the edge for reinforcement, even if you had the steel already. I asked it he wanted the wood to take home for the stove, but he said no, so that got put on my wood pile. Splitting it up to fit my stove door reminded me why nobody wanted to have Elm firewood if they could get anything else.
Before they left, the BIL couldn't hold it in any linger. Told me that my customer got a speeding ticket on the way down, somewhere in Londonderry or Winhall.
That will be a cherished thing, that stoneboat. He does enjoy his horses, though.
I suspect he came all the way down on Rt 100 to Londonderry, then west to Manchester and south on 7. Scenic ride, but 150-160 miles any way you cut it.

Scrolling through your pictures... most people in your area don't believe in real pickups do they? I saw 1 half ton Chevy and a 1 ton Ford.... Oh and the KW.. I don't know why this strikes me as amusing. I guess where I live most everyone drives at least a half ton platform of some type or another.. Not many people are trying to cram 1x18'x7' boards in their cross over :D :D

Love to see happy customers. I had one yesterday and today. I cut some 2.5" thick cottonwood sideboards for a guy's dump truck last year. He just had to have them right away. Never came back for them. I put them on Facebook marketplace and a guy scooped up two of them for making workbench tops.
A few days ago cleaning up my log yard I grabbed a birch out of a group of logs that had been around for a couple of years. They were some of those I was going to get to but kept putting it off. After awhile I decided to let them go a while and see if they would spalt. I cut five nice spalted birch, two inch, live edge slabs and a gentleman just left with two of them. He was thrilled to get them. I've got three more logs from the same group. I better get them on the mill.

This may be a bit off topic, but let me tell you about White sewing machines and one machine in particular. The house my family lived in when I was a small child was in California's Motherload and built during the gold rush. The bathroom was huge, and the only things in there were the toilet and this sewing machine and on the wall directly across from the machine hung the tp roll. This setup was convenient to this little boy because it was fun to run the tp through the sewing machine, just get the paper started and treadle like mad. The tp only needed occasional guidance. During one of these occasions, the last one as I recall, my right index finger found itself being sewn to a strip of toilet paper.
I suppose that would make for an unhappy customer. Yes somewhat off topic and somewhat related. :D

Brenda bought a White treadle sewing machine at an antique store. She had some question about it and called up White about it. They sent her a copied manual for it!! I was shocked and at no cost. Must of been 50 pages. Very good customer service.

At least he has a pot to pith in. but they are upside down. :D I think he did follow directions and get the load up off the ground. As long as the buckets are stable on the ground, and therefore do not break, should be good. If a side stress cracks a bucket it might fall. We are just having a little fun, and prob. a little jealous since we never thought of it!

PS Saturday's happy customer showed up to pick up all his Norway maple but it was pouring rain soon after he got here and I didn't get a picture of the load on his landscaping trailer.
I made him haul out the two short trunks of the tree as he didn't want to pay extra to mill the short ones. And after he saw the size of the pile of lumber he was getting he figured he didn't need them after all.

He was happy as the last sawmill he talked to about doing it told him that they were 4 to 6 months out on orders.

This is my first Happy customer. I dried his Sugar Maple slabs in the IDRY vacuum kiln he had chainsaw milled. 4/4 amd 6/4 all dried in 9 days.

Like I said a happy customer. The wood came out beautiful. Very little cracking or movement. I was quite happy to see the colour was the same going in and out.
Today's happy customer wasn't too happy. He wanted me to cut some 3/16" strips from a piece of air dried cherry. Then he wanted them to be 1/8" strips. I did the best I could but I didn't finish the job, as he didn't like the smoothness of the lumber from my fresh sharp blade. I suggested he take his lumber to a cabinet shop and get then to cut his strips on a table saw and not a rough cut sawmill.

He changed his mind. I was prepared to cut them 3/16" as I had printed out a scale of dimensions for my mill to leave a 1 1/8" strip at the clamp on the bottom.
I had it on my scale clipboard ready when he got here.
Then after cutting a couple 3/16" thick he decided he wanted 1/8".
Then he started talking 3 millimeters. I told him my mill didn't have a millimeter scale or a 32nd scale on it.
As was said, he picked the wrong machine for the job.

PS. I gave him the phone number of the guy who runs the cabinet shop across the street for him to call him and make an appointment to have his lumber ripped on his table saw with a thin kerf blade.
I suspect that if he doesn't steam or soak those splits before bending, whatever he makes up will not last long. The fibers need to be soft to comply and take a new set. When I did prototype machine design work I used to get similar customers. They sort of knew what they wanted, then they told us how to make it, and weren't happy with what they got, so they blamed it on us and refused to pay what was agreed. After a few of those we started to put qualifiers on the agreement before we began work. It's a tricky balance until there is some trust between the customer and the supplier/shop.
You can't win them all, especially with one hand tied behind your back.
Tell him to go jump in the lake! ....along with the strips. That's what I did with some wood I wanted to bend. I let them soak overnight, and they bent the next day fairly well.

Accuset II can do millimeters. It can also do other languages. I was showing off once to a customer and put it into Polish. Then it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to get back as I couldn't read anything. :D

We used to make white ash snowshoe frames. We'd soak the blanks in water with Downey fabric softener, then put them in a heated pressure steamer with 25 psi pressure for couple of hours. It was amazing how pliable the wood was, for a few minutes until it cooled.

He is a local doctor who is retiring very soon and says he is going to spend more time wood working so I have high hope for a boost in sales. He even brought his future, now actual SIL, over last year and he bought some odd pieces for wood turning and says they turned out well. Anyway the Doctor and his wife came and bought about 20 bf of lumber. He says he just needed a couple of pieces to make legs for a dining room table he plans to make with his leftovers from the above chair project. He decided he needed a piece of 4/4 for stock so he liked a 6' 1X8 then his wife remind him that would not be enough so he bought another. She is fast becoming one of my favorite people. They love to come look and I love to see how excited he is to show off the results of his work with my wood.
Tuesday's happy customer came over just before it started raining again and picked up a 10' piece of bark on slab he needed for an outside balance beam project.
He got one but most of the bark was falling off and I mentioned it to him that it would but he got it anyway.

Good job on the burl. I have cut a few and I always tell the customer they may just explode during the process and not to hold me responsible if they do. It is a fine line between not enough tension to hold them steady and overclamping and throwing shrapnel everywhere. It looks like he had several inches of good wood on the outsides to help hold it together. Anyway, burls are one of those breath holding exercises IMHO.

Well, I don't have a picture (I don't even have many customers because this isn't a job for me), but I milled some 2-3/4x10x16' top boards for a friends dump truck. As he pulled out I thought of the folks here and how many of you would like to have a customer like this. I was sanding a table in the yard when he came in, driving his 350 and pulling a trailer loaded with a mini-excavator. He backed up next to the planks, got out with a helper and loaded while we talked, he handed me the cash payment between boards and as soon as he had it secured, he was off. No muss no fuss. I know he was happy, and I was happy too. His only comment was that he liked the spalting in that maple. :)

Reminds me of my Grandfather, in the seventies he had a roadside stand where he sold vegetables, apples and eggs.
A guy a half a mile up the road was telling me that he stopped to get a dozen eggs but when he went to pay he was short 10 cents and said I'll pay you the 10 cents later so my grandfather says ok and handed him the eggs.
When the guy got home he looked and there were only 11 eggs, the guy has yet to figure out how he got the egg out of the carton without him seeing it.

I took a load of assorted wood products to a large local flea market today and must have had 8-10 former and one in the works customer come by. One said he bought a small walnut crotch and sliced into 1/4 blanks for knife handle he makes and wanted to show me pictures of how it looked. Another couple have bought wide poplar (I had to get mules to pull the big logs) for a shed he built and said they were building a Fla room and were going to want some pine. I offered him another card but he said he had me on speed dial. Another reminded me I had been by January of last year and sawed a bunch of cedar, cherry and ash and said he was getting another load ready for me to come back. best of all he recently gave some of the wood to a friend sent him to me me as another customer who has been by and bought some and I visited him Wednesday and looked at several big RO logs he wants me to saw as soon as weather and our schedules mesh. One lady saw a crate of kids blocks like I made my grandson and suggested I could take the 3-4 inch cubes and paint from one to six dots on each face and sell them as "Yard Dice". I may try that too. It was a lot of fun visiting with old customers who are now friends and having them tell me how much they enjoyed the wood and sawing. That is worth way more than the cash.
Then, of course, I had to have one knothead come by and want 6 tomato stakes (I had them bundled in stacks of a dozen but agreed to split a bundle for him as a favor) and wanted to reject any with a slight bend or a loose splinter or such then wanted me to tie them back into a neat bundle for him. I think he was about to ask me to take them to his car when he realized I had about reached the end of my rope. Oh well, there is one in every crowd I guess.
Good you were patient with him. He might be dealing with a vampire infestation.
A few more minutes and he'd have ended up with a (tomato) stake through the heart. :D He'd probably have checked it to make sure it was straight and no knots. >:(

So my 3rd job is for my Daughter and SIL, they want to build a flight of stairs off the back of their deck. I offered to make their lumber as they wanted it, told them "just give me a cut list of what you NEED" and I'll find you some nice hardwood.
SO this morning my daughter texts me the list and one of the items is "Treads: 5 pcs 1x6x8' " so I text her back and ask if she does think 1" is a bit thin for an 8' long tread, perhaps I should cut them 1 1/2" ? She says, "oh no, they are actually going to be 4' long, we just figured 8 footers would be easier, we will cut them in half". ARRRGGGHHH! ;D :D
So I explained how things work and now we are good. I am always looking for a way to use those 5' logs that find their way in.
I suppose if I had the mill when they were growing up they would already know this so I don't count it as a failure on my part or theirs, but still.

Yeah, we all have those tales. I cut a special order of 3/4" X 6" X 16' poplar for a guy 85 miles away. When I asked him how he was going to transport it he said in his pick up. It had a 6-1/2' bed but when he opened the tailgate it made it 8'. After I pointed out the problem hauling a 16'-6" load he decided to rent a 12' trailer from U-haul. I've read of the folks here who cut the customers 20' order only to have them saw it in half to fit on their 4X8 trailer. Or the guy wanting pine or poplar for a horse fence or posts in the ground. Keeps life interesting.
Yes, I know. I have read SO many of those stories here which is why I just shook my head, put on my calm 'Dad Voice' and explained to her that she provides the cut list and as the sawyer I will decide how to best supply that. I might be more sensitive because I have spent a good part of the last 45 years having engineers try to tell me how to make the parts they design. I usually hand them my mic, get them in front of the machine, and say "here, show me". ;D

Good thing they are pine!
When I saw his truck rack, that the cross bar was round, I suggested that he get a piece of PVC pipe and cut it down the middle so we can put it back together around the cross bar and make it a rack roller. Held together with two hose clamps.
And able to slide left and right along the pipe rack.
He has just emailed me that he has made the rack roller.
My idea was to set one end of the timber on the rack roller and the other end is on my trailer on another movable roller and slide these timbers up onto his rack.
I will photo it next time he's here.
But I'll have to cut some more timbers for him, next.

Today's happy customer called and then came over and got a 2" thick by 15" cookie for her sculpture project.
I cut this cookie from a left over piece of ash log. It has been drying here for over a year. And has all sorts of cracks in it which she liked. This is going to be the base of a sculpture she is making called the "Phoenix".
She likes the color of the wood as it looks like ashes.

She's not so happy today. She put her sculpture on the cookie and it didn't look right to her. Too big in diameter and too thick.
I offered to cut her another one, smaller and thinner, but she's decided to go in a different direction for the base.

I went to a flea market 25 miles from home today and will go to a different one 20 miles away tomorrow. I call them advertising trips as mostly I meet and talk with people and hand out business cards then 3-12 months later some of them will call for a mobile job. I rarely make enough sales on the trip to pay the mileage and Flea Market set up fee selling odd pieces. Before I finished setting up a lady came over and bought 2 dozen poplar lath/craft strips I make by taking 1/2" drops when edging 2" stock which returns approximately 3/8" thick X 2" X 8' (in this case) pieces. I sticker and air dry them just like normal boards and they air dry really quick. It just another salvage trick. They are great for making crates, lattice, etc. and she was excited to see them.
Later a couple came up to all smiles when they saw me and broke out their phones to proudly show me a corner table they had made from a 2" live edge walnut slab/crotch they had bought from me a year or so back at such a Flea Market trip. They added wrought iron legs and sanded and finished it and they were really proud of their custom piece. That makes a good day for me.

Looks good. I have an order from my florist for 20 cookies for a 5 October wedding. I told her I'd cut them just before the wedding to reduce the chance of cracking. She pointed to a 5 gallon bucket on my porch and said that was the diameter she wanted and did not care what kind of wood it was. Evidently she plans to place them down both sides of the aisle with flowers on top of them. In the past I have only seen them used at the reception on the individual tables with small flower arrangement on each and sometimes a big cookie with the wedding cake sitting on it.

Well I delivered and set the bar that I built for the neighbors wedding. They seem very pleased. I also took down a couple of small dead trees that were ugly and a hazard to the wedding area, made a bunch of short blocks for them to stand flowers on to mark out the aisle for the ceremony, and two 'pillars' to mark the alter area, then found a white birch hanger that needed to be knocked down, I cut about 30 cookies out of that for other decorative 'stuff' or firewood ;D. The bride is tickled pink and taking back a bunch of stuff she bought at a store that doesn't look as good. :)
All in all I worked up a good solid sweat and they are pleased. That bar is set solid enough for 3 inebriates to dance on safely. All screwed in place.

Just so others know,I have no idea if there are other stores outside of Maine,they are a chain convenience store,open 24 hours.Everything from ice coffee to gas. They just redid all the stores,bigger and better. In the small town that I go by that store,very common to see 10 cars in the parking lot.

It's pretty amazing to us, we have folks come from all over the country to buy our wood, and yesterday even had a customer from Texas, 12 hours away, one from Atlanta, 4 hours away, one from Florida, 6 hours away, and bunch of others. Last month, we got nominated and approved for selection into the Better Business Bureau, and have been nominated to be entered into the Best Small Business competition for next year. We will see how that shakes out.
It's hard to believe it started with an Alaskan Chain Saw Mill many years ago. And a lot of reading on this Forum.
Robert, How about a video tour on a Saturday? Have someone video to give us the experience your customers have on a busy Saturday? Just a thought.
For Mr. Milton to give you a proper experience of his operation he would need to mount the camera to his body for an entire week. From acquiring logs, to sawing with both chainsaw and sawmill, to stacking, to air drying, to one of his kilns. Come to think of it it may take more than a week as some kilns take more than a week after the air drying session. Once out of the kilns the material that does not go out of house for further processing is done in house.
Further processing involves many steps and can vary from piece to piece depending on many factors. Then some customers have requests that most times means more handling and time involvement.
Stocking the shelves in his sales building is no easy task, but I considered it very neat and orderly.
For a small time operator he can make a lot of sawdust.

I'm not real good at video recording anything, seems I never get around to it, but I need to do it.
We've had several Forumites come to visit, but the last one who showed up on a Saturday to watch the show got put to work pretty quick, put in charge of the tracksawing station, converting live edge slabs into table pieces. It was fun for all of us, but it does get a little chaotic. I think our record for slab sales was 22 slabs in a 7 hour period, in addition to all the other wood sold.
This last weekend, we were averaging a sales ticket every three minutes until early afternoon, when the Alabama game came on and customers thankfully started thinking out.

Any time there is a big SEC game on TV, there is a significant drop in customers, which is expected because the only thing that will make North Alabama stop in its tracks is a good SEC football game.

There was someone fishing around here a number of years ago looking to recruit sawyers for a sawmilling reality show. Don't believe he/she got many takers. I would not want to be embarrassed and made to look like an idiot by some TV Producer :).

Yesterday, as they were loading up the lumber the customer asked me how long had I been milling here in my yard. I told him 25 years.
He then asked me how old the sawmill was.
I waited a bit to see if he could figure it out.

My problem with most hybrids is NO tow rating. The Prius is not rated to tow Anything. At least with my hatchback I can haul a load of lumber, or a sawmill, or sometimes both. ;) 2800lb tow rating, so it's enough to useful.

I blew it today and forgot to get a picture of my customer picking up the last of his 738 bf of walnut. We cut the butt log (453 bf) Tuesday after struggling to get the big logs off his trailer. I actually had to move the mill to the log as I did not have anything big enough to move the log once it was on the ground. He loved seeing the magic hook roll the log on to the arms and watching the mill lift and turn as we whittled it down to fit between the blade guides. All that was 6/4 lumber and most of the boards were 22-23 inches wide. Even the edged boards were over 12" wide. The pith boards split in two and I was going to edge into about 6-8 inch boards and he stopped me and said he'd make a river table. He was going to take 2 of the wide boards and make a big farm table. I sawed the rest yesterday mostly into 6/4 with a few 4X4's for big legs. Crotch wood, cookies, etc. He loved it and was grinning from ear to ear as we loaded it to go back to Texas. He must have liked it as he left a tip of nearly $70.
That sounds great. I get to do similar log like that tomorrow.

Good luck. One lesson I learned/was reminded of was when gunbarrelling those big logs just take small bites and don't get greedy. It is faster to take small bites and rotate several times than get half way down and have to stop and Bibby off some excess with a chainsaw so your blade will pass all the way to the end.

The customer Ray works for a technical collage as the machine shop teacher.
They have a race team that competes in a engineering school race series. I'm met him 2 years ago when they were at NH international speedway. He stopped in and bought some wood then.We stay in touch on FB.
He's also a puppy rasier for Leader Dogs for the Blind.
That is his new puppy Ella .
He wanted to buy wood from me.
He does a great job with the dogs.
The 1x6 is for a project at his hunting camp.
I think it's in Hawks maybe?
He drives the race trailer from race to race durring the reason for the school.

Well I have just had only a couple of 'customers' but never got a photo. Today I had a custom job with a lot of odd sizes. The customers brought 5 RO logs, we used about 1-1/2 logs for the order and they left me the rest. One tail-gunned and the other kept the tally sheet because of all the different sizes. The latter was the toughest job. Took a couple of hours, but we got it all done except two boards that will require planing and I need to clear room in the shop for those. He has a '23 ford sedan they are restoring, hence all the oddball sizes. Anyway, they were both pleased and left me the other logs as a thank you. They also have access to a lot of other free logs and asked me for a list of what I wanted. ;D Also turns out the son is a wood turner and has an interest in turning blanks for bowls. ;D So a good hookup on both sides. It wasn't a lot of lumber, but it was what they needed. I even got a photo this time.

This guy used to work for a builder, now is a city inspector, but wanted some walnut to make a custom counter top with Hickory, cherry, as well as walnut he got from me. he stopped by to show me, after a preview with the owner. he is planning to run it through a big sander. He is bringing me several walnut logs. he got 60 bf of seasoned wood at 7% MC.

I love it when they come to get a mantel and tell me they just want a standard size one. ::) ::) That tells me they want one somewhere between 1 to 8 inches thick and from 6-20+ inches wide, and with either a perfect finish or the widest cracks, knots and splits imaginable and from 4-10 ft long. I had one guy who wanted a 23" wide LE front and anything but Walnut because it was too dark. As soon as he walked up he spotted a 16-17 inch wide X 2" thick walnut board I had moved to restack and had not put back up and immediately said "That's the one I want." I was able to get him a nice walnut 2X8 and he was fine with joining them.
One tip I picked up from visiting Poston was to give/save the customer a thin strip off the same cant the mantel came from so they can use it for testing different stains if they are staining it. I do often suggest they keep the extra length for corbels.
I love it when I see a happy customer leaving even when I realize the time spent was probably excessive for the actual value of what they bought. Keep them posts a'coming.

Well he does have a rack on top. I have seen many people load boards from the big box stores right on their car tops. Sometimes they even put something between the car top and the boards...

My buddy Jim and his son Zane brought over a Mom "pinteresty" project. Megan took apart a hutch, turned it upside down to make a "dresser" for their bedroom. Looks like you need some diagonal bracing on those. Wow. never seen a failure like that before.
I plant the jack (6 of them) on 2 inch blocks to keep them out of the mud. I gave a nudge and with the 5600 pound log, slid sideways and then off the blocks. log was at the limit of the max for the mill. I know Jake had steaks and straps to keep his mill from moving sideways. could have been worse.

I tried putting my mill up on blocks once at a job site to level it out.
and it fell off the blocks.
the decal on the mill shows either putting it up on blocks or digging out the area of the pad to level the mill.
Since it fell off I always carry a round point shovel to dig out for the pads.

I mostly go the other route and take along several 2X6 on 2X8 cut-offs to put under the landing gear rather than digging in. I often put a 6x6 or 6-8 inch 12" diameter cookie cut off under the rear landing gear. I take 3-4 2' to 3' long 1X6's to drive the low side tire up on to more level the mill side to side. I have had problems digging in the landing gear especially in winter. Rain causes the mud to fill in the hole which then freezes and I have to take a spud bar to chip it free. I am using the factory landing gear from WM.
I have knocked the mill off the blocks when loading a heavy log but never damaged anything. I take along an old bumper jack to lift and level the mill when the jacks aren't enough.

I agree MM, and we think his dad has some black locust. but for now he and his wife are happy.
he talked about burning the surface. we spoke about the green coating to help. It is dense so that may help. His wife was thrilled and painted it and they put it in today after work. Hedge would have been a good choice for a 50 year installation, but I did not have any that big.

Yikes! I about had that happen the other day. Had about a 4000 pound log on the mill and for the final turn to square it up the chain turner wasn't cutting it so I was gently rolling it over with the skid loader forks. Well, it was going gently until it finally rolled and slammed into the back stops and slid the mill sideways off of 3 of the 6 blocks. I was very relieved to get everything reset and find that everything was still straight.
From now on I'll take them off the mill to roll them and then place them back on the mill.
Like you I like setting mine on blocks to keep them out of the mud. I usually use 6" blocks so that I don't have to extend the jacks so far. That might have been what saved me.

I did not get a picture of the customer because the guy just called to get some slab wood for kindling/wood stove use. When he got here w/o 4WD and got to spinning I had to take baby john and pull him out so he didn't slide into a locust tree then when he got in the lot he hit another slick spot and I pulled him out with my 650 Kawasaki ATV. When he loaded about 3 wheelbarrow loads of wood he decided he had a load I told him I did not charge for that piddling amount. He spotted an 8/4 ash piece and mentioned to a teenager he mentors who was helping load they ought to make a bench out of it. When we got done I showed him my benches and the young man found a couple he really liked and bought one for his dad for Father's Day and everybody seemed real happy with it.

Another pay out from my flea market trip 3 weeks or so ago. A couple commissioned me to make a couple of 24" long RO, LE tables like my benches only 3" taller. Evidently they wanted to use them on their deck as side tables.They wanted Lichtenburg finish so I made them and had a 3rd piece of wood about same size so I made a 3rd one for stock. They came by while ago and bought all 3. They were concerned about how to finish them so I did offer to wipe with tung oil and did so and even sent them home with a small bottle and my soaked rag for a second coat.

last week I sold 10 1"x5.5" x 6 ' boards to a local fence company.. nothing really to speak of for that small amount.. however this week the owner called me and said that he was very happy with the quality and the full 1" thick boards I gave him vs where he usually gets his rough cut from when customers want rough cut. He then asked me to mill him 410 more just like the 10 boards he picked up last week! I told him I would have it done by next Friday. I started at 6:30 am this last friday and finished the order at 6:30 pm with the help of my nephew! called him to schedule delivery for Monday. He was happy and said he is going to go with me on any other needs his customers have in the future for rough cut!
it was a long day but a good one. I did a few other small things as well friday and figured I finished up with 1,250 board feet friday. It was a good long day! and a happy customer !! :) that was alot of small boards.

Its a great feeling isn't it. BTW when you are cutting 6' boards do you start with 6' logs or 12' logs and cut the boards in half when done? I have done similar jobs that way with very good success. Keep up the good work.
WV any more info on the tool that does the Lichtenburg. I know they say you can make one from a microwave transformer, but I am not that adventurous. :o :o :o. would be curious if it is commercially available?

The guy who does my L. engraving uses one he made from a microwave transformer. I have heard of people making them from the transformer in a neon sign which really has some amps as I understand. I have not heard of any commercially available rigs and there is more risk than I want to take on at this time. I have not watched him do it but he does talk about getting lit up occasionally. I am not at a stage in my life where I want to take on more risk of that kind. Good luck if you want to try it.
So you need amps (current) to do the job? I took a microwave transformer, removed the secondary and wrapped a few rounds of heavy copper wire (like #4 or #6). I forget how many but the goal was to get it down to 3 or 4 volts. I made a spot welder out of it. I put on a timing relay that you roll some dials to set. Works pretty good. It would probably work for that L. process.
It requires high voltage, very low amps. Transformer for hv, a couple leads, a couple brass rods with a pointed end. Igniter transformer from an oil burner works well. Neon tube transformer also, microwave is ok but more limited. Wet the wood with a conductive solution.
Not dangerous if handled properly. Need good insulation. HV will jump. Likev handling spark plug cables, just higher voltage and continuous. Not that difficult. Google is your friend if you want to see examples. Not commercially available, mainly because it's so simple.
I think you need high voltage and less amps, but not sure. if I knew for sure I would not be asking! :D :D :D. higher voltage is able to jump out and bite you. that is why I would want to be careful.
some on you tube I have seen really do not do that great a job. can you see if you can take some pics, and show us how he did it? might be interesting. does my wife have to give 5% of my life insurance to the FF? :o :)
It's an art. Some artists are better than others. Takes some practice. Tried it a couple times with neon tube transformer. That works the best. Not my thing though. Too many interests already.

I used 12' logs and squared up my cant so it was 11 1/8" wide by as tall as I could get. I then cut it in half to get my 2 - 5.5" smaller cants. then I made a trim cut to make sure I was starting with a level area again after flipping everything around.. then I used the simple set at 1 1/8" to get as many 1" boards I could. stacked them on 4 rough cut saw horses I made friday morning till I was done with the log. then I just used the chain saw and cut them all in half to the 6' length the fence company wanted.
I would also trim down any 1" slabs I made while squaring up the cant that could be trimmed down to the size I needed.
Today's happy customer traveled a bit to get to me. But he arrived on time with some 3by planks and one timber he needed cut back to 1 1/2" x 7" pieces for trailer decking.
I put on a new 4° blade and it cut this stock like butter.
I made him enough pieces to fix his trailer decking and he was so happy that I could do it today for him he gave me a huge tip.
I insisted that he just give me my regular one hour fee for the 45 minutes I sawed for him. but he insisted that I take three times that.
He left happy.
and hopefully his lumber is patch his trailer decking.

No picture (Again) but I had an old neighbor come by yesterday wanting some 10' 1X6's to put under a metal roof as a building extension for his dad - just strips to nail the metal to. He said he needed 16-17 pieces. I checked and no 10' but I had 3-1X6X12 and 7- 1X10X12 tulip poplar left so I stood the 1X10's up on the mill and resawed them in half to 1X5X12 and he was thrilled and amazed at how easy it was to resaw the 7 boards in one pass. He paid me but was $7.50 short so he made a special trip back down today to pay his balance. Another small sale but a happy neighbor so a good day for all.

I always use sidewalk chalk on mine anyway, but he is going to need a box of them, whereas I use one stick every 5 years, which is when it gets wet. ;D

My minimum rate includes up to 1,000 bf plus mileage ($.30/bf + $1/mile one way-one time). The customer knew that in advance and was well pleased with the work and the price. He told me when I quoted over the phone that it was worth that to him to have me come saw them for him.
I had a repeat customer and wife come today and bought a 4' cherry 8/4 LE slab (about 7 bf) one 1"X 6"X 8' maple board for dowels, and 6-1"X 1"X 2' cherry stickers I had left over and they had me saw the 8/4 slab down to about 6/4 and were going to use the trim piece for a bench cover. The wife fell in love with it for the crotch wood in one end. He was going to repair an antique loom or spinning wheel with the cherry. Found out he works at the local HF and told me he'd make sure I got the best prices available. I got a call today for some oak which I did not have so the caller asked if I could cut his logs and I assured him I could, gave him prices and directions. An hour or so later he called back and said he was on his way so I went out and set up the mill. I had just parked it the last time I finished a mobile job but not set it up. By the time I got set up I could hear my wife talking him through the final directions to get to our home and he pulled up with this trailer and three small white oak logs.

I had brought a flea market polypropylene choker and the customer hooked it up and slipped over my forks and I unloaded each log in front of the mill then sawed them into 7/8" thick boards.

Approximately 150 square ft of boards from 4-10 inches wide. The customer had just bought this old boat trailer and wants the boards to make a deck for the trailer. He was well pleased with his lumber and got a good bit more from the small logs than he had expected. I squeezed every inch out that I could even though it was a little tedious with a lot of extra edging but I think he will be back.
Gotta love jobs like that which pop up when you have time. You get them done right away, collect the money and move on. Can't beat that with a stick! 8)

I just messaged a customer that his order was done. Just two cuts. He needed an anvil block that was flat and had both ends parallel so it would sit square and flat on a concrete floor. Hadn't done a cut on a vertical log before but it worked out well. I'll drop it off tomorrow since I have to be close to his shop when I'm at work. He seems pretty excited to get a block cut to the right height for him as he embarks on his blacksmithing vocation. I know it's not a big order but it was a quick, fun project and he said he would make me a couple of hold fasts for my traditional woodworking bench.
As much as I like milling lumber it was a fun break to help out a young guy who seems really motivated to learn the blacksmithing trade. He said his family are all artists in one venue or another but he never found his niche until he tried blacksmithing. He said it was like a light went on and he knew what he was supposed to do.

Well done! Those are fun. I made one for a guy one time out of a big locust stump full of barb wire fence. It was the right size and nothing else I could make out of it but worked perfect for his need. Its basically the same way I make cookies. With hydraulics there is just enough of a lip on the movable clamp to rest the piece on till clamped and sawed.
I had a lady a few months ago who had screwed 3 small logs for legs on a thin piece of plywood for a table. They had me clamp the top and I made one pass and cut all the legs the same height and angle just like I make my LE mortise and tenon primitive benches.

Today's second happy customer is a repeat customer. I cut a timber frame shed for him.
He had a large maple tree cut down behind the shed, as it dropped a branch on the shed and made him mad.
The log was 8' long and around 32" at the butt.
I trimmed off two opposite sides down to 23" or so because he wanted some "wide as possible" 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4.

My "customer" is my niece and her husband. I help them frame up this "shed" (8x12) where the was a rotted 8x8 one. I cut, planed and T&G the cedar for the back wall, ceiling and front wall. I was down there dropping my son off at a Scout camp last weekend and asked to stay over. We finished out front wall (around the window and door) and all the trim (windows, corners, ceiling & baseboard) on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning I took these pictures.

Sunday morning I decided the space to the right of the door (drywall) had to go. So we ripped that out and, using my brad nailer, added T&G there with some corner moulding. Still need to make up trim boards for the door. My nephew had a bad bicycle accident (compression fracture of L1 along with lots of road rash) and hasn't been able to work on this much in the last couple of months. Turns out Saturday was his birthday so I "gave" him this present of completion. This is his home office during C19.

I was a little reluctant to post this but last night around 9:30 I got a text and pictures from a customer/friend who picked up some wood from us Sunday afternoon.
We sawed this Thanksgiving morning, put it in the kiln and ran it until Sunday. Fortunately we had good weather for drying. We pulled the wood out of the kiln on Sunday and it was below 10% MC. His wife loved the blue stain and evidently the wane as seen on some of the boards. We cut extra and they had plenty to do the job with some left over for extra projects. The wanescoating was sawn to 5/8" thick and random widths. We sawed mostly clear wood but also cut up a short, knotty log when he told us the more rustic the better.

well Lyndsey the trauma nurse from the city, sent these from the wood they got. she had a baby in the meanwhile. she and her husband are happy with a turnbuckle style brace as they did not want to disturb the live edge underside of the mantle shelf.

She paint those turnbuckles, and what keeps it from tipping one way or the other? Looks like a delicate balance but it must not be. (?)
I had recommended/described to them, pins in the wall for a floating shelf, so I think that is the case. I may have oriented the flat edge towards the wall. I will ask, but she is happy .
did this for my wife. we are fixing up the basement, and this is to be the woman cave to do quilting and stained glass. I am doing things different than I might normally. we installed vinyl flooring since this is in the basement. I bought a butcherblock counter that is finger jointed blocks of "hardwood" but it comes ready to stain, and I have plenty of other projects going. We went to just look, and this fit with a 1/2 inch to spare. we can quickly get some finish on it and she is good to go. would have taken me weeks to make one.

We were going to do ceramic with a wood look. we have heat in the floor so that would be better. but we can install this ourselves one room at a time. If we have a water issue, should do ok. to do ceramic, we had a lot of the 1 foot square tiles to take up first. this is fast, can move stuff around, and less mess. touched up the trim and reinstalled it. the cabinets came with the house, good quality, and we move them around as needed over the past 20 years. I will trim the top with an ash "back splash". around the window trim and ends.
Lindsey says they put L brackets into the stud and on top of the shelf. Her hubby is not a woodworker. but they are happy. I would have done a 1/4 inch lag with the head cut off, and slid it on. I like the warehouse/steam punk vibe of the buckles.

I think the customer put the flat edge out to showcase the contrasting sap wood. It is a simple nice looking shelf.
Maybe you could put it back on your mill to edge it and give a more secure wall mounting. ;D

my buddy Dallas needed more room to hang and display all the sheds he has found. He spreads manure and also hunts and traps. We were going to do a 3 foot rail, then he decided he wanted more room to display stuff. He is trading me the bobcat so I can get it mounted.

Sawed some short walnut logs for a woodworker not far from me. Mostly 5/4 with some 8/4 out of a short crotch piece. It was wider than long so I turned it 90 deg and cut with the grain. Makes for curly chips. Loaned him the pallet I stacked it on to make it quicker to load.
