NEXIUM

Yup, I been having acid reflux for years and I refused those aluminum antacid elixors. They never solved the problem anyway. Well this morning I decided enough is enough. I figured they must have advanced enough with stomach medicine by now that its relatively safe. All I see on TV is the advert for the little purple pill called Nexium. Well the doc prescribed the stuff with 4 refills (28 pills per bottle), so looks like its gonna take some time to patch the food pipe up. ;) I gotta go in on Friday for the X-ray to confirm the diagnoses, but I don't need to be a doctor to know what's at issue with my belly. ;) I haven't taken a pill as yet. Just waiting for 7:00 O'clock cause you have to take the pill at the same time each day. So, I figures by 7:00 pm each evening I'll be home in time to take my medicine. ;D Boy, the old guts have been mighty messed up the last couple days. Hope this stuff helps. ;D

Well, that's enough info. I figured I might as well share my ailments on here too. :D

I have been on the purple pill since it first came out. Can't say enough about it. If I would ever hold up a drug store it would  be "Keep the narcotics, give me the purple pill"
    Good luck with it

I hope it works out, I get some heartburn once in a while and it drives me nuts. If I had to put up with acid reflux I would be nuts,

I had problems too. The doc gave me something similar called Protonix (I think?). Anyway the results were amazing. In less than 15 minutes my heartburn went away and was gone. I took it for 30 days then went off. I had a few recurrences so he had me go back on for another 30 days. After that I had no problems. I'm sure Nexium works about the same, but do get it checked as there are some nasty (and life threatening) complications from acid reflux.

And if all else fails, get the doctor to prescribe ya some Aciphex. I suffered from Acid Reflux for years. Finally got to where I thought I was a dying. Seriously.  After some hospital time a few years ago, and going through a assortment of the different kinds including Nexium that's what did the most good.  Now I eat what I want and when I want.  No problems.

Acid reflux is causing me to swallow too frequently, feels like something is lodged in my esophigus for ever, makes me cough as some acid will actually splash into my lungs occasionally. So, yeah it'll drive ya nuts alright. ;)

An old timer i knew had alot of stomach operations during the war (the big one) and they took alot out because of ulcers. He didn't have much stomach left and he was taking some kind of medicine to control the acid, I can't remember which. He was pretty much dependent on the stuff because practicely had no stomach. I'm glad I'm no where near that bad. ;)

Took my first pill last night at 7 pm and at least I'm not swallowing as much all the time. But, this stuff takes time. I have a 4 month subscription. Glad to here your success with the medication guys. I'm on the down hill side of this now. ;)

I was just reading an article in Discovery magazine about acid reflux.  The main point was that large amounts or fatty food are tough on the "valve" at the top of your stomach.  Basically because your stomach is producing acid for a longer time to digest everything.

Well I agree Indylan that fatty foods will cause that and even apple juice, but my diet isn't high in fat at all, 'cept breakfast on occassion. I might have a cookie or a muffin for desert , mostly a piece of cantelope, grapes, pear, raspberries, strawberry or sliced mango. I eat lotsa fibre from multi-grain breads and frequently eat shredded wheat or oatmeal for breakfast with natural honey. If I'm going to be hard at work in the woods I'll eat one patty sausage, scrambled egg and 1 hashbrown for breakfast with coffee and muffin. The sausage and hashbrown breakfast is high in fat for sure, but my main meals are very low fat.  I eat lean meats, fish and chicken and lotsa veggies and fruit. Those prepackaged high sodium high fat dinners I never buy or eat. That stuff will kill ya. And I'm not even over weight by a long shot.  Basically, the valve doesn't close properly to stop the acid reflux up the esophogus. Ya just never know with these disorders I guess.

florida

Last September I woke up about 3 AM on a Sunday with shortness of breath. Nothing I did worked. After about an hour my wife insisted on taking me to the emergency room. By that time I couldn't work up much resistance. When we got to the emergency room they naturally assumed I was having a heart attack and started treating me accordingly. They soon discoverd thta it was not a heart attack but couldn't figure out what it was. They had given me oxygen so I was breathing easier so they admited me for more test. A day  later they figured out that my esophgas  was bleeding into my stomach as a result of acid reflux. They were able to repair the tear endoscopicaly but I was still in the hospital 6 days and had to have 7 pints of blood.

I'm not looking for sympathy but want to warn everyone that acid reflux is bad stuff that can kill you.  Another result of mine is asthma and constant coughing. Stay away from alchohol, tomatoes, chocolate, fatty foods and  hot sauce. The diet is simple, divide food into two groups. Foods that are good and that you love and stuff you never touch. You get to eat the stuff you'd never touch.

I did not have it as bad as florida but was heading that way shortness of breath any time any tension came my way. Macho as I was I would not do anything about it, became a wuss, probably will live longer. Learned my lesson. Guys, don't wait, see a dr. you will probably be glad you did. Live long enough to spend the childrens inheritance.

HOLY SMOKES!  Swampy my significant other had trouble with a lump in the throat for a long time, wierd swallowing etc. Went to see her family dr, he sent her to specialist, had to get barium swallow, scope etc.  almost a year went by driving her nuts!  She thought she had some kind of throat cancer.  Finally someone put her on those pills and in one week it went away! 8)  She searched everywhere in medical books and on the internet and there is NO info on the symptoms.
I wish I had read this a year ago!

Glad she pulled through it. I knew I had it for years, just didn't do nuttin about it 'til now. My grandfather had a bad stomach too, with ulcers. Probably from chewing and smoking. I've never done either myself. Its actually been worse this past year. So with any luck I'll be good as new in a few weeks. ;)  With prolonged accute symptoms the acid will actally eat at the enamal of your teeth, which is minor to other effects as florida informed us.
