hi, I started my cabin this summer but never got around to posting any pictures. Since hunting season is over and it's quiet here, I thought I would post what I have done so far!
1. Road was excavated in the fall of 2005
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/13469/road%20completed%20%28WinCE%29.JPG)
2. Had the excavater back in June 2006 to cut a hill and finish my pad where the cabin is going
3. Installed the water supply, its spring fed with a 1000' of 1" pipe (i've got a 180ft dropped) lots of pressure. June 2006
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/13469/spring%20%28WinCE%29.JPG)
4. Installed septic system out of 45 gallon plastic barrel. Works the very best June 2006
5. Started installing my 8X8 sills. July 2006
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/13469/8X8%20sills%20taking%20shape%20%28WinCE%29.JPG)
You can see the river in this picture, I still have some trimming to do. But the river is only about 25ft from the cabin!
6. Installed the floor joits. August 2006
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/13469/floor%20joist%20installed%20%28WinCE%29.JPG)
7. Installed the floor. September 2006 (The floor is now covered with lumber wrap until next spring!
I was able to accomplish most of the work in June while we were on vacation. We as in my wife and our newborn which was only 10months old
I bought a used travel trailer in June and was able to park it beside my cabin to be and use the water supply and septic. We spent 3 weeks in June and almost every weekend after that. We live 3 hours away! so every Thursday was pack the utility trailer with tools(for me) and toyz for the young lad!

Started in May 2007, i'm planning on cutting the logs and yard them down to my camp site!
almost forgot to mention, floor size is 22X26 plus there will be a 8ft covered porched on the front! and i'm going to be bulding with vertical logs!
Thanks to a great site!
Sbishop ::)
Thanks Bishop,
looking good.. Always enjoy what other people are doing... Looking farward to spring for updates...
Jerry
Looks great SBishop. Must be a great feeling to get to that point. I'm sure it will go fast from this point forward.
Are the post that the sill logs sit on in the ground? Does the concrete go into the ground? Are there brackets holding the sill logs to the post?
Can't wait till the next post of pics. Good luck.
the cement pads that you see are about 5" thick and are sitting on top of the ground. I got this design from "Pappy" on this website. the post are used telephone polls that are treated (should last a few years) and the 8"X8" sills are sitting right on top of the post(that way I can level if need be). I will let everyone know how I make out in the spring once the thaw is finish to see if there is any movement!
I forgot to mention that I tied all the 8"X8" together with an overlap joint and with 3 6" spiral galvanize spikes. also in every corner I used a piece of 6" 3"X3" 3/16" angle iron and with 3" lag bolts. I didn't want the thing to move ;D
Sbishop
sbishop,
looking like a nice start for your project. how's the fishing in the river? How do you tie the upright logs together?
Are you going to spline the upright logs when you put them together?
Looking great! Your view ought to be outstanding when it's done. Glad to hear that the water system worked out well. Scott
Stephen1, the fishing was awsome this year. my father handed over 25 acres of the 100 acres of homestead. I grew up on this land but moved when I was 16, so that was 15 years ago. a lot have changed since, mother passed away (it was her father's land), dad remarried, then retired and his health is not the best, so he decided to sell the house. now the house was located on a non-access highway meaning no new homes could be built or driveways put in. luckily there is an access road that divides my dad's property in half, and there is 2 other lots behind his. so there will always be an access. long story short, the goverment bought his house with only 5 acres and tore it down and the barn included. because it was too big to move. it was hard to deal with at the time but there wasn't much I could do about it. So I decide I need a place to when i'm "home". hence log cabin ;D
now back to the fishing, there is salmon/trout pool about 400 yards starting right in front of my cabin to be. I was there for a week in September, I looked one day and I counted 7 big Atlantic salmon(15lbs +), 11 grisle (smaller Atlantic Salmon 4-6lbs) and about a dozen HUGE sea trout...bigger then the grisle... I coulnd't belive it, this river has always been really good, not too much pressure, it's almost a well hidden treasure! back in the 80's the salmon runs were excellent, then came the late 90's, not too bad, but for the last couple of years it has really picked up!
QuoteHow do you tie the upright logs together?
Not sure yet ;D, Well the plan is to toe nail at the bottom and drive a spike through the top plate into the top of the log. I've also seen where some people have spiked each log into the other log about a foot above the floor.
enough talk for now :)

What happened to all your pics? Were they ever in your gallery? Lots of red X 's
You have told us about a number of very interesting projects, the cabin but one of them.
Would sure like to see the pics you have. :)
I mistakenly deleted my gallery the other day...does anyone know a way to get it back?
sbishop
I think there is a way, you'll need to notify the administrator he may be able to put it back.
Not sure, you'll have to ask.
There could be a back up of it, somewhere.

I haven't managed that trick
yet... If I do I've got the whole thing backed up in a single folder on my hard drive, I'd hate to have to recreate them all at this point. I did delete several pictures early on when I ran out of space, I thought I'd only deleted unposted pictures but I just recently found an image missing from one of my first posts. At the time I didn't realise I was just one or two posts away from an increase in storage volume.
who's the adminitrator of this site? I can send an email to see!
I wish I could remember what the pics where ;D
That would be Jeff B
Send him a PM (private message) or email admin@forestyforum.com
If you can see the red Xs (I can't with this browser) right click on them (or click and hold with a MAC) and select copy image address (or whatever your browser's equivilent is) then paste that into an empty text document. The image name will be in the address.
I snagged the source and found your file names... Lot's of ASCII code in them from spaces and parentheses.
Here they are in order of appearance:

I thought I would update you folks on what I have been up too in the last 4 weekends. I hauled out 100 black/red spruce trees with my wheeler and log arch tree length! got them all peeled because the guy with the sawmill could not come till yesterday and I was afraid they would start to dry up!
Sunday morning I decided i'd cut an extra 20 trees. So I have those left to peel.
Rudy, just about 7 miles from where i'm building came with his sawmill. Man this guy could saw, I could barely keep up with him plus he had a helper! sawed up everything in 8 hrs!
going to move the logs down to the camp site this weekend and stack them!

Keep it up and you'll be sittin' on that porch in no time watachin me catch those big fish ;D
pappy
Hey sbishop,
If you need a good motivational read and maybe some tips on building vertical log, go to www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ainsworth86.html. Dorothy Ainsworth built a log house virtually by herself (twice). She's a perfect example of true grit and determination plus easy on the eyes.
Pappy, I wish it was only 120 logs!..it was 120 trees...some had 2-3 logs per tree!!!!1 :o
Sbishop
In 8 hours? ???
yes started at 8am and finished at 4:30pm. 30 min lunch.
I was glad he was done. I was hoping he'd take a break here and there but no >:(

Yes we did have a great time, twice. :)
I kept bringing up stuff Pappy could be making. But, "that it would add an hour to each day." By the end of the day, Pappy was working till 8pm. :D
Got all the logs move down to the camp site, sorted and stacked! Should be able to start building before Aug. I hope!
My old 84 was sure put to the test. The old baby had 4ft of framed replaced about a month ago...I guess my welding is good 8)

Thats a nice stack of logs there Steve!! your ambition got me working this week when I was off. I finally started building my windows. I
I got my corners and door frames installed this past Saturday. They went up pretty good. Eh pappy, look familiar? :)
I was fishing in front of my cabin yesterday morning for trout and caught this salmon. Very early for salmon, this river gets a fall run which usually starts around the mid-late August..I was very suprised!

Pappy, no roof this year...that's next years project. Next spring I will be cutting my purlins and getting the roof done. Will be water proof by next fall.
If I was to get it done next year that mean I would have too much time to fish next year..HAHA

have you got the roof designed yet or will that be the winter project. i missed you dropping in in October
Stephen1, when the forum went down, I had to way to contact you..next trip up I will for sure!
Now for the roof. I am going with purlins, i haven't done all the calculations yet but I do believe a 9/12 pitch will give me lots of head room in the loft.
PS. It will be just like Pappy's... ;D

Hi Steve, I thought that might have been the problem, looking forward to seeing you next time your up this way.
Pappy, how did you know? ::)
:D
actually, I have a question for ya!
What's the distance between your loft joits?
Sbishop
Sbishop
Not sure right off the top a me head but somewhere around 3 feet or would that be a meter ;D
With the two middle ones I had to place one on each side of the door then split the diff between those to the wall... I boo booed cause I didn't have enough room from the bottom of the loft joist to the top of the door to space them evenly... Should a run another course of logs on the wall I guess ::) I decked the loft floors with 6/4 X 6 T & G cedar flooring...
i'm heading up to the cabin tomorrow, first time since 2 months. A friend and I are going to make the back property line. We flag the line a couple of years ago and now we are going to paint it. (just an excuse to get out :D).
I'll post some pics on how it's holding up.
Sbishop
I just stumbled into this thread today. I see you've been putting things together for over a year. Didn't even know ya had a thread going. ::) Nice grilse ya have in your picture, never ever fished the Bartibog river before. :) I haven't fished for 15 years, had the conoe out in 1998 up on the Upsulquitch, but no water. Came back home. I bet that other grilse was tasty out on the Coleman. musteat_1 The young feller looks like he's having fun pounding nails. ;)
Have a good day up at the camp.
I love what you've done so far. I'm in the process of building (read that clearing the spot over the river) now.
The biggest problems with the design are the constant changes from "She who must be obeyed". :D
Are you going to insulate the interior walls or just leave it natural?
Swanpdonkey, it's been over over 3 years now! 2005=road, 2006=up to floor, 2007=walls, 2008=better be roof :D
Everything check out great, what a beautiful day in the woods!! Now I know how out of shape I am but snow shoeing is fun!
Sbishop
Well, whats the hurry, eh? ;D
Looks like a nice bunch of snow around the camp. Just wait when you start worrying about shoveling off six feet of the stuff from the roof. :D
i'll make sure that I will never have to shovel off the roof....and then again not sure how I will be able to walk that steep pitch :o
Sbishop
Just need a roof scraper on a long pole. No need for climbing. ;D
Hey all, i'm back at it!!
2 weeks ago, i cut 22 more trees, yarded and peeled them. Last Friday, had the same guy come in and cut up my joists and the rest in 4". Saturday i was able to put up 5 loft joist, 2 more to go on the front...then 7 on the back.
the only thing i forgot to do, is take some pics....i will take some this weekend.
The cabin seem to have wintered well...everything seems good!
Once i get my loft joists in, couple more rows around the walls, i'll be ready to start my gable ends.
I was suppose to put up purlins for my roof, but i lost access to the purlins, i do'nt have any on my lot but that's ok...in one way the purlins would look really nice but on the other hand i don't have that much help this year. So i'll probrably be going with a comman rafter setup...i'll have lots of question when the time comes ;D
Sbishop
PS. Pappy...trout season is just around the corner....... 8)
nice to hear your back at it, I have been waiting for the black fies to die off, There has been lots of overtime at work so I've been kind of busy.
Black flies have been worse this year than I've seen in some time. They say it was because of the deep snow and a lot of ephemeral pools this spring from the melt.
was up this weekend, got all my floor joist installed except for 2 but they are ready to be put up. Soon will be working off the second floor.
Going to start framing my front porch next weekend!

Got my front porch installed on the weekend. What a weekend! I was about half way through our 2 1/2hr trip when i looked at the wife and said "you hear that"...sounded like a bearing going on my trailer...it was full with all the wood for the deck..I just turned up the radio and prayed. We made it but blew a bearing...no sweet. Saturday morning woke up with a bad cold. Got the porched framed by mid afternoon after breaking the pulled cord on the generator. Sunday got the porch decking installed. Add all the tools loading on my truck and went to move it off to the side. Well kinda got stuck...after digging for 4hrs and getting a hold of a friend of mine, came with his wheeler and winched me out. What a weekend! :D
Next up next weekend, going to clean up around on the camp and fish!

Your cabin is really a thing of beauty. I would like to build one like that.
It's rough when you have to "clean up" the fish running around the cabin 8) 8)
Those were some nice brook trout. My old stomping grounds were over on upper tributaries of the Little South West Mirimachi and Renous Rivers. 8)
Nice spot you have there, will be great when your cabins done, you can't beat living by the water and catching a feed of fish. :)

Gonna have to get our backsides over there this summer fer sure now ;)... The water is that cold as you need waders ??
Nice catch of trout dere !!!!
Pappy, the invite is always there.....
Trout should be good for the next 2-3 weeks, then it will be salmon come Aug.
My younger brother and I are heading up this Thursday for 5 days, should get a lot done!
Sbishop
Hey Steve looks like way to much fun! I always like to hear about the other guys F ups, they tend to make mine look small, are you putting a roof over the porch?
Great thread SBishop. The cabin looks great. Nice trout. Keep up the good work and the updates. Thanks
Later SWIdaho
Stephen1, yup..going to be a covered porch!
i think i should treat the porch, i was thinking of using pentox, any other suggestions? just roll it on?
Sbishop
Got my loft completed on the weekend, man did it ever rain. Sunday was a total lost, it down poured all day. It stopped Monday morning around 10am and was able to finish the lofts by 5pm. it had been raining since Friday night on and off. The river rose more then 5ft, it was fast and high. Was able to do a little bit of fishing. My brother and I each got a nice trout on Saturday.
I put down a temp floor that i hope will last a year or two, I strapped the joist with 2x4 on 16" and put down 1/2" osb.
Next step is to work on the gable ends.
Enjoy the pics

Hi Steve, looks like you are having all the rain a few days after us, the mosquitoes are big enough to carry the dog away, there has been so much rain up here. i would find a nice looking stain that you can walk on without getting poisoned. I like the cabot stain, looks great, lasts a long time on the deck and you can walk on it. We buy it at Rona. looks like a lot of work on the week-end, for so much rain, B... consumption must of been low though! :D
Yup you're gonna need them temp decks to work from!! Makes things alot easier when working on the gables and purlins !!!
Rain I'll say it's been rainin',, wife says it's just like Fl , sunny till about 2 - 3 pm and the skies open up !! It's been doin' that for about three weeks now it seems... Looks like we'll have a nice 4th a July weekend though ,, man it's gotta dry up cause transplants in the garden are yellow and sickly looking :( rain rain go away little Timmie wants ta play ;D :D ;D
Black flies were some wicked last night :o :o :o There goes the price of Deep Woods Off ;)
Yup, rain for sure. If it don't rain 4:00 am til 6:00 am or 3:00 pm til 6:00 pm it rains all day. We have had over 6" in June. Way above normal. I thought we'd have a dry spell with all that DanG snow we took on last winter. The field we have to travel along right now is just starting to dry up, I'm the only one who can get in to the thinning block, so I'm taxi. ::) ;D
Got back from the camp late lastnight, made good progress this weekend on it. I have 7 rows each on the gable ends. I do a little bit of fishing, didn't come home with anything but did manage to lose a nice salmon on Saturday.
As for pics will have to wait a week as i forgot my camera ::)
Heading back this weekend.
Sbishop
Just got back from the cabin late last night, guy at work wanted to give me a hand and do some fishing, we ended up doing a lot of fishing. Fishing was good but didn't come home with any but hooked and lost 3 salmon. But we did manage to get the windows put in the gable ends and 5 more rows...about half way..one more weekend and I'll have the gable ends done...then it's roof framing!

Tough building a cabin when the fish are biting eh ;) ;D :)
Keep up the good work 8)
Looking good sb
Sure would like to see them up to size permitted.... 8)
::) ::) There are those who can give ya a hand at it.
Got a pair of rafters up this weekend, wasn't able to work much on the cabin as it has been raining now for 5 days in a row. But i did manage to get my ridge up and my rafter templates for both sides so this weekend I'm good to go. Boy did the river rise a lot. Won't be no fishing for a couple of weeks because it will take that long for it to come down.

I help build a 30' x 55' two story house out of all 4"x 4" in south east Alaska a few years back. Lot of time spent on a project like this. Keep up the good work, and catch a nice fish now in then.
I got word that the Miramichi River has a good run of salmon this season. Better tie on a fly and do some water whipping. I've had some of my best fishing in high water as long as there is not much woody debris and vegetation floating in it, the fish are more active. ;D
When are you excepting reservations at the camp? ;)
Reservations are available now....only thing you need is reservation # and a hammer...and you are welcomed at "Da Bog Inn"
8)
Got a good run done on the rafters this weekend, a friend of mine father stopped by and helped me put up the rafters on the covered porch!....5 more and I'll have the rafters all complete! i'm hoping this weekend i'll be able to start on my dormers, I'm putting 2 on each side!
Sbishop
PS. the salmon run is on, i heard them jump yesterday in the pool in front of the cabin....I'm going to dig out the rod next weekend for sure!

There's going to be a lot of good times spent in that camp. Some will surely stick in your mind when your a grampa. ;D I know some of the good times I spend was with my grandparents and their sporting camps and in fishing camps along salmon rivers. My grandfather still has 4 standing, on two different sites, he built over 50 years ago. 8)
A co-worker and i headed up late tuesday night to so some fishing and camp building...end up doing a lot of fishing...but came home empty handed...there was a lot of fish around..just couldn't come up with the right combination ::)
got my dormer walls up, going to work on the dormer roofs next trip!

Its certainly comeing together now, looks great Sbishop, must be hard to tear your self away and head back to the "real world"
We could do with some of your rain down under, be carefull how you curse it, Huey the rain god might decide to teach you a lesson like he's doing to us. ;) If it ever does get dry up there are bush fires much of a concern around your cabin? no doubt the river would make a good firebreak.
Just got back from 3 days at the cabin. worked on a bunch of things including fishing :)
Dormers are almost done, just need to finish installing the hip valley, got my beam install across the front of the porch, stained the porched too! oh ya, cleaned up inside the camp!!!
Fishing was good, well good for others and not for me ...Friend of mine stopped yesterday afternoon and caught this nice salmon, i helped him land it right in front of the camp! 8)
Enjoy, Sbishop

One thing is for sure, there is lots of moose over there. Hope ya bag one. My old stomping grounds was a little west of there in the Little Southwest/North Pole Region. We stayed in warden's camps and logging camps and on occasion with a friend at Robinson's Ridge. When they started opening up that area with logging roads, it was like herding cattle with all the moose. We would see 10 easy on every fishing trip. They liked the roads, a lot easier walking. :D The deer where plentiful to, until the mature coniferous were all harvested. There was nice deer paths along every lake shore. Best years of my life. :)
Cabin's looking good.
Hey, things are looking real good, been awhile since I have seen any pics of the cabin, I need to come for a visit. Give me a call when you come up next week, I sent you a pm.

Didn't have to worry about falling off the roof, we just slid right off into the snowbank!!!! 8)

Two weeks ago, i was able to install a railing across the front of the camp!
Next weekend i'm planning on finishing my corners and maybe install a few more windows..and oh ya do some fishing! 8)

We call them metal. It is coated steel sheet stock.
I think you folks call it corrugated roofing. ;)
Gday
:o :) ::) ::) Duhh I musta been havn one o them days ;) :D :D :D
Yeah Corri steel is what we use down here we have Zincalume silver and about 50 colours to choose from but i prefer the zincalume finnish and its cheper and lasts longer ;) ;D ;D
Finally got all my windows in and some steps built...was up to the cabin last week for 4 days with the family. It was clean up time. Wife and son helped my clean up around the cabin!! 8)
Also got my front porch support completed!
Now onto the doors, got some gluing done last night. hopefully by next weekend i'll be installing the doors!

Your on the last legs now Mate ;D 8) 8) 8) 8) Ive always used Boiled linnseed oil with a mould inhibtor in it as it lets the timber breath used that on about 25 buildings over the years one coat the first summer the once after 12/18 months then about once every 3 to 6 years as it builds ip in the cell structure over the years you require less coats ;) ;D Dad used a two part sealer on the first couple of homes he did but it was a pita to maintain and scaled up and flaked of after few hot summers down here ;)
Reguards Chris
I have no idea.
My friend is to the point he needs to treat his cabin. I printed out the sweet and sour mix posted here last year and gave that to him. He also needs to water proof if there is such a thing after the coloring. I also printed him out the parafin, linseed oil, mineral spirits mix.
He is on a very tight budget.
Looks great 8) Good thing you got the canoe handy in case it keeps raining :D
After taking a few weeks off from the camp...The wife let me back at it this past weekend 8)
A friend of mine stopped by Saturday morning and helped me install my doors, after a few cuts with the chainsaw and a whole bunch of "I think so" we got them installed. The install went good except it took a lot longer then i thought!
Anyone have any suggestion on door handles i can use. the front door might not be thick enough for a regular "weiser" door handle. ???
Sunday i put down a 1/2" osb sub-floor, maybe next weekend i might tackle the bathroom!

Sbishop,
I noticed you have no settling space for the doors. Were your logs dried prior to installation?
Not sure if settling is a factor for your construction. Hand scibed cabins built with green logs settle about 3/4" per foot of wall height. This needs to be accounted for in the door and window installation to prevent binding down the road.
Jon
Jander3, i did have lots room above my door frame but i didn't make the orignal door frame the right width. So i ended up removing the door framing to install the new doors which had the frame attached to them (pre-hung). But then I had to install the door 1 1/2 higher to accomodate for the sub-floor and finish floor. The logs were cut in late spring of 07, then stack till Aug. So it's been over 2 years now drying. The rear door there's only 1", the front door i've got about 2" for settling. i've got lots above my windows. i'll keep an eye on the doors. Thanks bringing it up!
Sbish
Everyone I know that has a log cabin wish they had gone one log higher after the house is 10-15 years because of the amount of settling.
For your door latches, you have several options, a pivot arm that works from both sides of the door and locks into the frame like a safe would work, just padlock it into position. For security use the old barn door lock method of dropping a 2x4 in metal brackets on the inside of the backdoor. It just depends on how bomb proof you want to lock it up, windows are still a week point unless you shudder them.
Most fabricators have an idea for a locking mechanism that is simple to build yet very sturdy compared to a "Weiser"
Looking good.
Got all the outside window trim installed except for the dormers, those will have to wait till next year!
I also got my door handles installed...I was able to put in a standard door handle! 8)
Hopefully some plumbing later on this week!
Enjoy, Sbishop

Downright inspirational!
As I count down the day until I'm "retired", it's refreshing to look at a project like this get excited!
Nice work.

Very very nice! :)
I was going to suggest having something made to order by a black smith or using an antique door handle/lock. There are some really ingeneous door locking mechanisms that were used hundreds of years ago from wood and iron. I saw some examples in a slide show that someone brought back from a tour of timerframe houses and barns in England. So it would take a little research, but very interesting.
My son Hunter and I have been at the camp for the last 2 weeks...(with the misses and daughter stopping by for a few days in the middle)
Got a little bit of work done, the dormers are 99% complete, installed log siding but will install the green facia this fall when it cools down a bit.
Also starting on the loft flooring, 2x6 T&G spruce.
Enjoy.
Forgot to mention that the fishing was good.....
PS, my upper cabinets are complete, base cabinets are almost ready to be screwed to the wall.

Regards Chris
That is very a very nice cabin, I hope to do the same in the upcoming 3 years. As a U.S. Soldier at my retirement point I opted an additional 3yrs of service in Alaska. This is a dream come true, I have requested the assignment for the last 20yrs. I would like to utilize the Land Auction or at least the OTC land purchase method in Fairbanks, close enough that I can get back and forth to work at Wainwright; this is the first obstacle, second is ensuring that the land has cabin building resources. Those are the 2 factors that I need to fall in place everything else will be paced at my leisure. If anyone has any info or guidance for a Vet that is looking to "Drop Out"; it would be very much appreciated. Did you cut all of your lumber?
Hi guys, well I'm back at it (daughter health has been stable these days :))
Got the cabin all cleaned up, bleach the whole outside except for the railings and post on the front porch (used 1 part bleach, 2 parts water...water down the logs first, sprayed the bleach/water mixture....wait 5 minutes and rinse it off)
Also got my propane hooked up...indoor cooking and hot water!!!!!! whoohoo!
Next step is chinking and staining...I'm assuming it will take me the better part of the summer to chink it!
More to come!

Wow! The cabin looks great. Those fish look like what we call speckled trout down on the gulf coast.
That cabin really glows! Think of all the speckled trout that you can cook on that stove..........or salmon, or trout, etc ;D.
or all the fish that got away....HAHA
What type of material will you chink with?
Magicman, i will be using Energyseal (have no choice, it's been ordered 8))
Sbishop
Got my chimney installed on the weekend....whoohoo! Now i can't wait till the fall to fire up the stove!!!!
Very well done,thumbs up mate!!!!!!
Since i haven't updated in a while...I thought i would!!!
Well on Sunday i got the chinking all done....What a relief!!!!
I started at the end of June and i thought to myself after the first day that it would take forever...but has time went on, i got faster at it and by the time i was done, i was going even faster!
I ended up using Energy Seal and a caulking gun from permachink. Clean up was pretty easy with water...except the stuff on my clothes is there to stay :D
In really tight spots where the gun was too big, i used a mortar bag from Home Depot...that worked well.
oh ya, rags, multiple spray bottles (backup in case the only one you have don't work anymore) and an artist paint brush (#10).
I don't have any pics as you really can't tell but i'm heading to the camp in the morning and plan on bleaching the front deck and railing. i'm going to be stainning the camp in about 3 weeks...anyone want to show up? food and beverages will be supplied to the first 20 FF members to show up... ;)
Sbishop
If you catch some more of those fish, I will have to come :D.
If I wasn't planning a trip to the west coast and planning to meet up with a BC Fforum member, I would be so there! :)
Congratulations on getting one more step completed. Now all that you lack is "finishing up". :D
I would have come down, I'm moving at the end of the Sept, and I just started working on the barn, I've kept things in there for the last 28 years......... :o
I got my cabin all stained on the weekend. Left Friday morning at 4am as my younger brother was there fishing for a few days and was leaving that day by 5pm.
Him and I got 2 sides completed that day. On Saturday i did all the railing and post...took it easy as a good friend of mine was coming up Sunday to give me a hand. Well we finished the stain by 6pm. What a long day but it turned out really good and i'm happy with it.
I ended up using a garden type sprayer and back brushing. I remember asking Jeff what his thoughts were about using a sprayer and he said that it was just as fast using a brush..I agree but i had the sprayer so i ended using it...I though it went good except lots of over spray. The stain is used was Sikkens SRD Cedar 077.
And for a bonus we got the stove and pipe installed this morning...even put a few pieces of paper and wood to say that we tried it. I got to get the stove inspected hopefully later on this week for insurance reason....then i'm good to go with the stove....Then on with the stairs with the help of Jim!!!
Dormers won't be completed till next year i think..depending on the family and how fast the winter arrives...maybe i'll get lucky and get it done! if i do, i will be installing a green facia at the same time!
Enjoy!

Beautiful!!!!
Is that an Earth Stove by Colony Hearth?
It is an Earth Stove but not sure about anything else, this is the sticker that is on the back.
Anyone know if this stove is good or bad? I got it from a lady at work, she bought a house that had this in a living room, decided to get a new more efficient one

Yes, that is it. My Earth Stove is fantastic! Been heating my house for 30 years. I absolutely love it.
Awesome WDH, that's great to hear. if you are heating your home...I think i shouldn't have an issue heating the cabin...I can't wait for the -30c weather...snowshoe in with the family and stay the night!
Sbishop
I think that you found a diamond in the rough! I am not sure if they make them anymore, but I don't think so.
If it's well insulated that stove will heat the camp just fine. ;D
The insurance may want to see a heat shield behind the stove. ;)
Nice camp! :)
SD, i don't think i'll need a heat shield has i'm 53" away from the wall, i'm only required to have 48" but if the stove was CSA approved i would only need 36". We'll see come Friday when the inspector comes out! 8)
Sbishop
Beautiful, WDH- can I ask what type of finish is on your stone? We are soon to install a wood burning stove (from Lowes and a lot like yours) and we'll need to build a fire resistant wall of something. I have a pile of stones similar in appearance to yours but dull looking without a coating of some kind- used it on the floor and fireplace of my own house and we love it. Polyurethane on the floor looks great and is very durable but I would worry with it behind the stove- melting, oxidation, catching on fire?
Lj
Lj,
To make a foundation for the stove, I cut off the floor joists and framed the opening. Then I dropped down through the crawlspace and dug a footing. Poured the footing with concrete and hired a mason to lay cement bloc up to the bottom of the joists. Then, filled the blocked in hole with red clay and really packed it down. Then poured a 5" concrete slab over the whole works to subfloor height. The walls of the "L" were then bricked by the mason to within 1 1/2" of the ceiling to leave an air space. Along each side is a vertical air vent about 2" wide that goes from near the floor to the top of the wall. Along the bottom of each wall are air ports about 3" x 3". Then the brick walls are covered in stone veneer, in this case "Smokey Mountain Gray". Before the stone veneer is applied, screen wire was placed over the air vents and ports in the brick. Well, that is a lot more than you asked for, but I knew that you would appreciate the significant "over-engineering"! A tornado could take the house away, but that stove would still be standing there.
Another part of the story is that I could not get homeowner's insurance when I built the house because we live 1/2 mile from the county road way back in the woods way out in the country. That was enough of a deterrent to the Insurance companies without having a wood stove to boot. When I finally got an independent agent willing to consider it, the construction of the stove area with the air space behind a brick wall with air ports on a dedicated concrete slab sealed the deal. I have now been with that agent for 30 years and he is a friend by now.
There is no finish to the stone. That is just the way it looks natural.
sbishop, I have been following your progress and enjoying every post. No question, my next project will be a Log Cabin Bunkhouse. Here I am planning and I have not completed the one that I am working on. ;D
sbishop-I'm really enjoyed reading every posting on here. Inspirational for me as we just put in our down payment a month ago on our retirement cabin. August 2012 will be here really soon for me.
Got the stairs installed on the weekend...with all the planning that went into this...it was actually a piece of cake!
THANKS Jim and everyone else that helped!
I'm all done working on the camp for another year but i will putting on a railing first thing in the spring!

Wife bought me this sign about 4 years ago to put up at the camp....well i finally put it up yesterday with the help of my son Hunter.
He also helped me stack some wood so when we come up at Christmas*...we can keep warm!!!
I winterized it today as deer season starts tomorrow and i won't be back till sometime in December. It was around 15c, it sure felt weird draining the water out of the camp and it so beautiful out! :D

The way life should be. :)
Looking good, but wonder why you are not there to deer hunt?? ??
No deer or go somewheres else? That is a loooong time to be away.
BT,
I hunt about an hour from there...about 1/3 closer to home. My godparents live about 15min away from my stand...so i usually crash there since we are in the stands before dailight and get out when its dark!
Not too many deer around the camp but lots of moose and millions of bears :D..there is some deer but not plentiful...but the deer population in NB is not that great these days...but 7-8 years it was. The last 3 winters has been hard on them!

Hi guys,
Opening up the camp this weekend! I will be bleaching the dormers this weekend in preperation to have them finished by the end of june. Is it ok for the bleach to hit the meta roof? it will be a mixture of 50/50 water and bleach.
This year, the plan is to finish the cabin 100%. exterior will be complete by end of June. upstairs railing and finish the floor on the lower level....that will do it!
Thanks
Sbishop
I'd suggest testing a small area for any effect. Could "bleach" the coating.
What kind of paint is on your metal roof? If it is a Kynar type paint I doubt it will hurt it. You may find that it brightens the paint slightly by removing haze and oxidation leaving a slight color difference. I would not expect it to "bleach" the paint. Forgive me if you have already stated what kind of paint it is. I did not take the time to read through all 9 pages of this thread. You may want to start a new thread on this topic with just the specifics. Nice cabin! I dream of going to NB someday and fishing for sea run Brookies. I have a special place reserved on my wall for that future trophy.
One step closer!!!!
The outside is finally complete....got the dormers and all the metal facia installed on the weekend. Was suppose to do it a few weeks ago but it rained the whole week i was on vacation....but the outside is done now...
Did get to do a little bit of railing work upstairs...little more then half done....but i had to do a little bit of fishing ;D
Enjoy

hey Hunter nice fish!...Nice work on the cabin Steve
Got any snow on the cabin roof yet, Steve?
I wish!!! clww ;D
But we did get about 10ft of rain (give or take 9ft) last weekend....deer season is on and i'm praying for snow in the next few weeks.....wife is not impress... :-*
i'm sure we will get our fair share of snow in the next few months. But last year i didn't get any snow at the camp till Jan.
Sbishop
Where are the fish pics ??? :D :D.
Yeah, no kidding! I want to see some more pics of your son and those gorgeous fish you guys were pulling in. I see plenty of deer.
SBishop - My wife and I are doing very similar to what you are doing. We have cut and trimmed about 400 trees and have flattened about a hundred of them on two sides.
We have neighbors who did the same about 30 years ago and their houses are still holding up and strong. My question to you is what did you use between the log courses? Our neighbors just used construction adhesive but I feel there should be something better to use with flat on flat.
Also did you saw all your logs the same thickness or did they vary according to size of the log? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Fish pictures?mmmmmmm...the big one got away... :D
I didn't end up doing to much fishing late summer or fall...mostly hanging out with the kids and wife at the camp...i think they call that relaxing? :)
Ya'll will have to wait until next June...I promised i'll post some!
I forgot to mention plus to take pictures by my flooring is all done, both levels...first level is 1X4 t&g spruce and the lofts are 2x6 t&g spruce...i've got my railing about 1/2 done but i'm all done for this year....can't wait to fire up the wood stove this winter!
sbishop
oklalogdog, sound like a fun project!
i didn't put anything between the log courses, for the most part you can't see out...good tight fit. my logs are were attached using rebar, drilled halfway into the course below. i'm thinking you could use some like a gasket sealer you would put between cement and your sill on a stick frame house. not really cheap but you could cut it in half or 1/4" strips?
i've got different size courses...starting with 6" the first 3 row (i think), then 5" half way up the walls, 4" halfway up my gable ends, then 3" to finish it. all i had left was about 100ft of 3"....it will be my sill for my shed (someday)
ask all the questions you want, without the forestry forum, the great people i met here....not sure if i would have what i have now. Now its my turn to give!
Sbishop
Just saw this thread. Gotta say, nice job building and documenting. My wife approves of the project and says I can do something similar if I want. Now, just need to get the land, designs, mill, friends to help, knowledge, skills, mill, and... ;)
Oh yeah - forgot to mention in my post above - your cabin is just outstanding. Good Job!
That is really a fine place you have and a whole lot of good memories for Hunter. He will enjoy it for a long time to come. Great trip we had with you. Chuck

Oka,
I just finished my ERC log house. Logs were 6x6x8' long & flat on all 4 sides. I used sill sealer between the logs and it has worked out very well. I bought mine on sale via Ace Hardware outlet:
http://www.lifeandhome.com/sill-seal-5-1-2-x50.html
I screwed them together with 10" Oly Log screws. For the end butt joints I stuck a square of sill sealer between the ends, then angled my log screws to pull the joint tight. Out of 300 logs and close to 1,000 end joints I only had half a dozen that I could see daylight through. Log caulking on both sides of the joint fixes that.
Spend some time and shop around for all your supplies....prices vary quite a bit.
Here is my build thread if you are interested:

Pls post some pics here that you think are representative of your build. Thanks
MotorSeven,
I loved the pics from the link, problem is I don't have enough time to go through all the pages. It would be cool if you had just pics posted someplace so we could all quickly go through them. I haven't seen anything yet but the foundation, but I have a good imagination! It's going to be a wonderful place!

On my cabin the first course was 16", then 14", then 4 courses of 12" and I am on the first course of 11" logs. I am using foundation sill foam between each layer and staple it down before laying the log on top of it. I also cut off the inside face of the log to make the inside flat, less peeling, and it makes the butt and pass corners easier. Basically I made D shaped logs and usually left a little rounded on the inside corners so as to leave a groove to make it easier to chink the inside joints. The course I'm on now will have the loft logs in it too so it is starting to look like something ;)
Thanks for the great ideas and tips folks. We are making progress slowly but surely and working every available hour on the project. As soon as I get enough to look at I will post pictures. Been cutting, dragging, and trimming logs in our spare time for nearly two years. Why did I not know it was going to be this much work?
Reride we need some pic's.
As for mine I don't have any updated "house finished" pic's yet. The reason is that the place looks like a tornado hit.....I hate moving :( Boxes everywhere, too much stuff to the point it looks like a Cracker Barrel exploded. On top of all this company is enroute for Turkey day....
I'll update pic's when things get organized. As far a the build goes, there are about a thousand pic's in the build thread.

One of my neighbors who built his own log home from native ERC was a building contractor by trade. He also sawed his logs 6" thick (D logs) and used the 10" OLY Log screws. He said his house is "hands down" the strongest structure he has ever built.
SBishop,
Thanks for sharing your build. Love it!
