If those older models are in good condition and meet your needs, go for it. The 357XP is a high revving saw, once broken in and properly set up, it will rev to almost 10,000 rpm under load.

IT will rev to 14,000 RPM under no load. So my 372 turns something like 13,600.
JD 540D cable skidder, and 2 huskies- just right.

Marketing, I "saw" no difference. Though it was my "special" that had "small" problems at the beginning, like the muffler falling off. I used the saw later on a chainsaw mill and it ran great.

I saw no difference on anything external such as the clutch, oil pump cam (plastic), etc.

I think it was called special because it was meant to come between the Stihl farmer models (61 cc), the Stihl professional models, and priced well under the Husky 372 (use to be $150 difference).

I think it was called "special" because it was made "eSPECIALLY" to compete at a specific CC and price point just under the pro models on both the Stihl and Husky brands.

My second one has been holding up fine with no repairs needed except cleaning the anti-compression valve. I might keep this one beyond the two year warranty.

....

The 262xp, 261 and 257 all belonged to the "154-family", along with the 154, 254 and 254xp.

The 262xp was the powerhouse of the family, and the 257 the "dog" - not compareable to the 357xp at all. The 357xp replaced the hot-rod 254xp, and the 359 replaced the 257, as the "dog".

The 261 was a seriously down-tuned 262xp - but as far as I know you just need to change the piston (not the cylinder), muffler and clutch to convert into a 262xp.

Unfortunately the 262xp was replaced by the bulkier, heavier and less powerfull 362xp, that was based on the 371xp, as was the 365. (362xp and 365 have the same power, but different displacements and powerbands).

The 300-series designs mentioned here were not developments of the 200-series ones, but totally new designs.

when you order a piston to convert the 261 should i just order one for a 262 xp? If so the compression hieght must be higer on the 262??

In your well educated opion and you sound very much that what saw can i get that is light and great for cutting limbs from twigs to 16 inch the 365 i carry around is a screamer i run amsoil but it's about 2 pounds too heavy.

a guy pulls up a top from the backwith a timberjack skidder of white oak and i cut the cratches that y out so i can put them trhough my saw and after he pulls up  10 my arms are whipped i guess i have been carring saws too long my left elbow is wore out.  I get a break when i jump into my skidsteer and pile them up tho which only take a few minutes and then back sawing. then back trimming branches over and over there is 30,000 face cord in the wood i am in.

It's 3 degrees out in the morning and nobody wants to work unless it's 70 and sunny seems like that's prolly why they hardly have enough money to eat and i have orders for 5 thoudsand face cord as of now. i have only been on my own doing this for 3 weeks.

If i could get work done from drinking coffee and sitting in a pick-up then i would have lots done.

4 more guys that come there to watch me just about everyday they come to really watch how fast the saw is but it still bothers me that i am slipping on the ice and can't feel my fingers and toes  and they raise there coffee cups to me when i look at them some friends eh? ok enough for now back to it the phone is ringing gtg.

i will edit later have to run.

Just a uneducated guess here so not sure, but maybe someone that is 100% sure will step in and tell us.

I am guessing it was the difference in one being (365 Special) CLOSED port and the other being (365) OPEN port.

If memory serves, it is not that simple - actually it is a mess.

I believe the "special" designation really appered at the same time as the 372xp replaced the 371xp. The difference was meant to be the side access tensioner and semi-transparent gas tank - but that doesn't add quite up either, as the "special" designation wasn't used everywhere - so there is non-specials with that features as well.

I could well be wrong, but from all I have read about the issue trough the years, this is as close as I get...... ??? ::)

Right!   :)

The 261 piston is dished, to take the compression down.

Don't forget the muffler (or mod the 261 one) and the clutch!

Ok thanks i have a 257 and a 262xp also a 371 xp with a big bore and a wood ported kit performed on it coming to help with the  sawing on trees that we have to cut up. I also put a 16 inch which only cut 13 inch from the teeth out to the tip on my 365. also put a 8 tooth sprocket on it man it really flings the chips now with the full chisel chain and half the raker ground down.

I also took my 394 xp and put a 18 inch bar and full chisel chain on it and sped that sprocket up as well got to love power.

A buddy came over with his saw and we were cutting 12 inch rounds and i said here try mine. He grab it and set his 029 farm boss down and i thought i was going to have to tackle him and wrestle him to get my 365 back. It's a good thing i didn't let him use my 394 rocket he prolly would have taken it home.  lol

So i told him it's was made in 1998 and i just now put the first new spark plug in it from factory and the guy who checked it took it out and said hey that a resitor plug that original i said yup run amsoil 100 to 1 and the run clean the plug was like brand new just tan colored. it still has 125 lb of compression don't know what it had when new, but she screams. I bought it from home depot used out of there rental fleet 8 years ago.

Cold fingers? I would like to suggest to you to check out Husky saws with the letter "G" in the model number. Example: 372XPG. These have electrically heated handles which would help quite a bit. I don't do much cutting in very cold weather and I do not have an XPG saw myself (would like to). I do have White Finger disease and the cold really sets it off.

Most of my saws have heated handles, and it isn't a coinsidense!!! :)

Read up on Raynaud's Disease. You will find some helpful info and taking Ginko and Vit E will help with blood flow in the finger tips if this is what you have. Good Luck.
