I don't "collect" but I have a few.  My very first plane was from the high school shop.  It's a longer one and it was dropped and broke it at the throat.  So it was going to be tossed.  The ceramics teacher took the opportunity to show me how to braze cast iron.  It came out pretty flat and I use it occasionally.  I've since picked up a few #4 or #5s (not sure, not a connoisseur of planes :D) but are the ones I tend to grab to do some quick work.  I have some littler ones and the same tiny one FFOS has in the second picture.  That thing is pretty handy.  They are not all in the same place.  I have two "timber framing work buckets" up at the cabin so two planes, slicks and such are up there and the rest are at home.  Maybe I'll get a picture to post of the ones here.

I have used my little modern one extensively.  I'm sure I will start to use the old one too.  I love that little plane to just take the corner off of a piece.

Started out restoring my grandfathers Stanley #3 and Sargent 418.
Loml bouht me a Stanley #2 at a garage sale for $2, took 45 minutes to restore, it was pretty clean. Mom supplied a #4 (full reso) and I bought a #5.
Got an 8c from a passed friends estate sale, needs a full resto.
Also have grandpas # 78 rabbet plane.

Yes, l do use them as needed.

I rekon I have some 50 or 60 hand planes in use and an equal number stashed away in the garage attic or awaiting restoration. I have also made quite a few wooden hand planes.

They are very practical for repair work when you cannot use the machines efficiently.

When I started woodworking what seems like a few hundred years ago, I used planes for all my work. Over time I got interested in collecting and using all my collectable tools regardless of rarity. My travels overseas and into non-touristy areas expanded my collection, mostly hand-made planes and other tools from China.

My rarest plane is a #164 Stanley, obviously used very little and I have used it, after all what good are collections if you can only look at them?   Now almost all my woodworking is with power tools but will still grab a handplane when needed.   Life certainly is an adventure.
