I have a 1973 JD 440B and the I/II shifter lever has worn about half thru it's diameter from riding on the right side of the cowling. I would like to remove the shifter to weld it when it is not on the machine. The last thing I want to do is burn up the old gal. How would I remove the shifter? Thanks in advance.

rockwall, if it's anything like my D it's pretty easy to remove the shifter. Just disconnect the cable and remove it at the pivot point. I had a similar problem and the cause was a worn bushing.  Had some machining done and it took out the slop so no more riding on the cowling. Good luck.

Drive that roll pin (spring pin) out or remove the bolt shown below it. And re-bush to remove the slop as mentioned.
