Title: Meet our Sawyer
Post by: Jeff on August 31, 2019, 09:05:46 PM
It was time. Harley needed a full time friend again.  Sawyer is 8 weeks and was born July 12 on a farm a few miles from here. We brought him home today.

Well looks like Harley don't mind at all. When we got Pumpkin,Dew did not like her at all. She got alot of tough love from Dew. Pumpkin went on Dew's side of the car. Dew flipped Pumpkin over and Pumpkin learned that was his side. We did not even dare to leave them two together the first year alone. Good thing we have two front doors. I almost thought Dew would take Pumpkin out in the woods and come back alone.
How big will Sawyer get?

Sawyer's parents we were told weigh around 90lbs full blooded shepherds. Harley is 120, so they should match up okay. Pretty pleased how Harley is taking to him.

Oh boy. Id forgotten what its like to have a puppy puppy.  Harley only visited when he was a baby. Icey came to us 6 months old. Juno would have been the last puppy, so its been 20 years.

Sawyer at 8 weeks has no fear of heights and last night i slept on the couch with him behind my legs. Other than  the times he would climb over and make a kamikaze dive to the floor.  Id take those cues to take him outside. Its not like i dont already get up multiple times to take myself.  Im glad its not winter!

We have had 8 pups  born or gotten on the farm over 36 years. They each have their own unique personality. We also have the problem of being beside a 4 lane highway. But it seems that the one we got now has made it the longest and he was the crazy one.  The kids figured he had ADD. He has been the most interesting of them all. But training pups is like kids a full time job. Harley will take that job on most likely, Very sweet pup enjoy.

:)  Yup!  He had a bad day yesterday. We were stacking some 3" solid blocks inder the edge of the deck to block access, cause im (not crawling back there again) and somehow Tammy accidently tipped one over on Sawyer's  front leg. The crying was horrible. I thought it was broke. By the end of the day he was back up on 3 legs but he's not doing much. He's limping bad yet today but starting to put a little weight in it. We took him over to meet Dagger's  little dogs last night. You can see he was favoring it and mostly laying

He sure brings back a lot of fond memories. My wife has had many shepherds since before and during our marriage and she always tried to get them as young puppies so they would bond with her instead of getting more "Pack Instinct". They are very intelligent animals and can be great with kids when raised together. She raised several litters of puppies and several of them became very productive and well known police dogs. One made one of the biggest drug busts of the time in SC when we were there. She used to work with our local police and they would give her Marijuana to store with her tennis balls the dogs used to learn to track drugs. It was a big game to the dogs and they weren't looking for drugs or explosives - they were just looking for their play toy which just happened to smell like what she trained them on.  Bite work started about Sawyer's age with tug of war and a burlap bag and progressed to the various training sleeves as they got older. I think you have a real keeper there.

So the puppy is doing pretty good at going outside to pee. Problem is his hurt foot. He ends up sitting in his pee at times. Then guess what? Dad comes along and picks him up with little consideration to this. Holding an odiferous puppy at chest level when one has a long beard in the same vicinity. This can and does create a " where the heck is that smell coming from?" moment when sitting quietly watching an episode of Roadkill on motortrend, followed quickly by by another "Aha!" Moment.
THE BEARD! Well, the puppy got a bath and the beard a farewell and i can now watch Roadkill without thinking thats what I smell like!

Why not bring the dog to the vet? Then you would know if the bone was cracked or ok.
Title: Re: Meet our Sawyer
Post by: Jeff on September 06, 2019, 12:44:54 PM
I did take him to the vet. Our dogs are like our kids. We got him to the vet as soon as we could get him there. He examined him and could tell the problem was in the paw and in that location of those bones. They are like the finger bones in the back of your hand  He told me that either they are broke, cracked, or just bruised. We could find out for sure if we spent $80 on an x-ray. He then said, no matter what he found, broke, or not broke, the prognosis and treatment were the same, His recommendation was save the $80, the dog would be fine without my having to know if it was an actual break. I agreed.

Neat video. Looks like his ears are already standing up real well for one that young. I have seen them 5-6 months old before they stood up as well as his now. I like the way your vet thinks - sounds like a practical guy.

I have to keep these videos from my wife. If she sees them she will certainly want another shepherd. Her last one looked a lot like Sawyer does at that age. When she was 5-6 years old we took her to Norway with us and Becky got an attachment for her bike to hook Trip Hardy to. Sort of like a big spring to act as a shock absorber in case the dog took off after a cat or squirrel or wasn't paying attention when Becky started out. The first time they went out they rounded the block and I was waiting with a camera. They came back with big grins on both their faces and Trip Hardy was prancing and high stepping like she was the queen of the ball but I noticed Becky was not pedaling. It only took another ride or two before Trip Hardy figured that out and paced herself to run with a slack lead and Becky had to go back to providing the power to the bike. They both enjoyed their outings immensely.

I did not know that. I was thinking if broke the dog would need a splint or something.
I'm very happy he's ok, I did not think for a minute you were a bad dad.
Just asking about a vet, Because you did not say anything about a vet run.
I think we all here love our pets.

Yea, he is doing pretty good. Problem is he is under my feet so much I've stepped on him twice. Just enough to scare both of us. He is gravitating to me at this point, but understandably. I'm always on duty. Tammy goes to bed at 9, is up at 4, gone much of the day, so I am the night shift and most of the other shifts. He is kind of a full time job right now. I have a website to work on and I am having a horrible time getting sit down to focus on it. It may have to wait for this dog to mature a couple more weeks!

So we had a batch of border collies, I had just done some sheep butchering and gave all the offal to a batch of 12 week old pups, one of them was slurping up intestines and was nearly done when another saw it  disappearing, so he grabbed the last ft and took off, all 10 to 15 ft of it. That pup just stood there in bewilderment, wondering were his supper went.

( she has trouble with the mouse since she has no opposable thumbs).  she says to tell sawyer "ruff",  :) :) :)

It looks like Harley is issuing age appropriate discipline based on the pups age.  Pup is getting bigger, so time to establish some boundaries.  As Aretha Franklin said, " R E S P E C T, find out what it means to me, oooooh sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me."

Really good.  He was fussy the first 1/2 hour, then settled in. We stopped at the mackinac bridge at 2 hours and i took him for a walk, then we drove the last hour. He did very well. He's  fitting in well at the cabin. I neede to go to detour to get gas for the mower,  and the little snot jumped back out of the truck and sat on the porch. He didn't  want to go!

He had cold in his eyes, and he had eaten a pile of sawdust from Tammy's weekend project, then the cellophane tape tammy used when she tried to wrap his foot.    That picture reminds me when we first got married and I came home to dinner and sat down to a plate of french fries and asked my wife "Where's the meat?" and she said from the kitchen "On your plate". She came in and and found hers gone too and we looked over and saw her German Shepherd was kind of hanging her head with hamburger steak on her breath.

All my years of having dogs I've always saved the last bite for them, if it was something they could safely eat. The only dog i can remember stealing food here was Roxie, Stacy's visiting dog while we were preparing for a pig roast boiled dinner about 3 years ago. A whole package of polish dogs.

we do not feed from the table and the dogs are not allowed by the table while we are eating, although they want to be.  helps establish who is boss and they are not a nuisance when guests are at our house.  My grandfather had a little dog named bear.  he would put chunks of bread all over his house to show us the dog would not eat people food unless he said ok.  guess he trained us to.  he would always put a piece on our knee and the dog would only eat eat it if told ok by Granpi.  he looks like he knows who is boss.  I will not comment on who I think he thinks it is!! :D :D :D running-doggy

A few weeks back, I had the trash compactor open and was tossing the chicken bones in piece by piece as I stripped the meat.  Then I noticed one of the dogs had removed the backbone, placed it on the floor and was licking it.  All I had to do was say "hey!" and she left it alone.  They do get chicken scraps so they know the taste.
The last week or so, my daughter is working on her Halloween costume.  She is making a necklace from some chicken leg and thigh bones.  She cleaned and bleached them and left them in a colander on the kitchen table.  That night she asked if I put the colander on the floor.  No, I said.  Then she asked if I did something with the bones.  No.

The one dog sure looked guilty! :D

My Boo-Boo would carry my shoes out on the front lawn. Never chewed one. But if I was missing a shoe it would be on the front lawn. ???
Lots of memories with him. I had to lay my t shirt down on the floor on my side of the bed. We did not let him on the furniture. He was a outdoor dog and was a Dirty Dog. ;D Seem like I did that for months with him.

Harley is an unintended causality of Stacy's horrible episode of late. The day they lifeflighted Stacy, my Sister came to watch her dogs and mine at our house. Harley got what was probably a toothhole in the hind leg. When i got home I saw him licking his leg. He had it licked so bad it was ripping the hide. Almost an inch. Its the cone for 2 weeks, or his leg, then a cone for two weeks.

My secret to fixing a lousy day at work is a litter of Labrador puppies coming in for first round of shots, not too many things better than sitting on the floor being play mauled by seven puppies(truthfully I've never met a litter of pups this doesn't work on) I just picked Labradors due to slight personal bias.  Yes I will sit on the floor of the exam room and play with my patients.  Sometimes I'm amazed at how many remember where the treat jar is after I'm done.

Luckily the pump didnt break although it was froze. Ifbwe had not been there yesterday it would have. Zero this morning.

Big test for my awesome little buddy. Im in the deer blind finally. He is in the cabin by himself.  This is his first time alone. Ever. Im fretting, and hes probably kickin back.  He did find this after all earlier today. I let him out by himself for a few minutes and there he was. The can has to be older than our occupation of this property, although thats what i used to drink in the 80s, only long necks. It was 3 bucks for a 12.

Looks like he is doing real good for a puppy that young.

He reminds me of the time my wife took her shepherd Trip to a Schtzhund trial in Raleigh NC. Part of the trial required her to put Trip in a down position and she had to go face away so she could not give any covert signals or anything and Trip had to stay there 10 minutes. Becky was facing away and the judge was watching another dog doing his various skills. It seemed like every time the judge would look away Trip would crawl forward a step or two then when the judge would look back Trip would just look around all innocent like "What? Me move? Naah." She did that several times and those of us in the bleachers were laughing. Becky could not see what was going on and did not know why were were laughing. Finally the judge caught Trip moving out of the corner of his eye and told Becky to go ahead and call her and she lost points on that skill. The look on Trips face was what was so precious to all of us. They are really smart animals.

OK Jeff, ya got me. I love PW extinguishers because they are very handy and refillable (and it was a good way to keep the kids in line when they were younger ;D). I even own more than 6 of them. But I have never seen on like that! It looks like the soda extinguishers we had in the schools when I was a kid and are no longer used. Does that one shut off when you lift off the trigger?  How often do you use it?

Sawyer was 7 months old on Wednesday. He looks like he's going to be a big boy. His ears are still too big to get in the photo! :)

Seems like only yesterday he was fitting under the chair rungs.  Both your dogs are the picture of health and handsome.

You speak canine, too?  One of mine will do the tilt and then she would bark (really loud).  So we got her to do a sort of beagle howl instead (lots of praise when she did it).  So now when we come home, she'll stand in the hall and howl at us - with a really long, drawn out howl.

Hey Jeff, what is the significance of the Boy's Life cover in the background? I haven't seen one of those in a very long time.

Not 8 months old yet. His feet are bigger than Harley's.

So this morning about 4 am I ended up in my recliner. I pulled a blanket over me and sawyer climbed up beside me. I had not had a sleep paralysis episode in at least for a month. I had one this morning. I've been trying to teach Sawyer to recognize what is going on. I was able to vocalize and call for help but I was not able to manage any volume for Tammy to hear me. As soon as I started, Sawyer just got down and left me!  What I did not know was he ran into the bedroom and Jumped on the bed and then jumped on Tammy and woke her out of a sound sleep, got her up and  led her back to my chair where Tammy found me calling for help and shook me out of it.  It was obvious according to Tammy that he came and got her to come help me. It's not the direct approach we. Have been working on but I will take it!

Sorry to hear about the episode but glad Sawyer was there to help. He sounds like he is worth his weight in dog biscuits.

That is good!!!
The other dog we had, Dew, loved and mean loved Brenda. If she had a coughing fit he would be at her side.
Me, I could fall down and bleed all over and scream for help and he would sleep through it.  ;D
