Title: So Where is _ _ _ _ _ _?
Post by: Jeff on May 18, 2014, 01:06:54 PM
Sometimes we notice that a member we used to see here often has been missing for sometime, so the first inclination is to simply ask on the forum HEY! Where is so and so?   Folks, this is not a good way to do it. The reason being is, there are sometimes very private reasons to why someone is not on the forum. It could be a member issue, or it could be a forum issue, or it could be no issue at all. But if there is an issue, by posting the question publicly, you put us, the missing member or perhaps even yourself in a position that is much better handled within personal messages.  If you miss someone, and are wondering where they may be, ask another member that you know has had some interaction with the missing person, or better yet, ask an admin via the private messages.

Today we again had such a topic started that resulted in the topic being deleted, and then a member who likes to stir the pot being "administered".  Please, remember, many times there is a lot more going on with things than you might think. We'll be glad to fill your need for knowledge when we can, but sometimes we are all better off just not knowing.

I have wondered about a few that have gone away or stopped participating, but figured if I was supposed to know, I probably would already. :D

Good post Jeff!

Ya never know, it could be a very personal issue that's been keeping a member away from the Forum!

You really have to be careful about how many people you give a piece of it to. Maybe that's why they call it "loosing it" when you give someone a piece of your mind.

Good insight Jeff. I was recently gone (from forum) for a month or so and doubted anyone missed me :) too much...but it wouldn't have suited to go public with the changes (in my life) happening.  I would have certainly responded in a PM cuz you'all are my buds!!

But I'm back now...much, I'm sure, to everyone's vexation :D

Hey guy's, you too Roxie.  I'm around but have visited infrequently for the last couple of years.  Gdaughter is going into the second grade next fall.  Her baby brother will be 10 months old tomorrow.  I spend time shuttling kids here and there.  Dinlaw as well to or from work.  With this schedule and the mill 25 miles away, doesn't allow me to mill.  Weekends with wife and honeydews keep me the rest of the time.  Yesterday was a kitchen faucet repair day.  I do mean day.  Was going to replace the seats of a Price Pfister for hot and cold water.  Turned out the hot water supply also supplied the dishwasher would not shut off.  Had to kill the whole house water to make the repairs.  Then Lowe's only had the faucet parts.  Had to go to Home Depot for the supply valve.  Ate up most of the day.  I've gone back to building and flying control line kit airplanes.  Where I started when I was at home as a kid with my folks.  Later graduated to R/C, sold all of it and bought blacksmith tools.  My poor LT40 Super deserves better I know but sometimes you just do what you have to do.  Ran across this thread during the visit and thought it would be the best place to say hi, I'm still out there.

I use to have a lady that worked for me that missed several work days in a row every couple months.   When I questioned her about it her response was  "I can only take so much of you people at a time and I need a break."      :D

She was a great worker too, so I put up with it.

I've been missing for a few months, too, but I doubt anyone noticed. I had to cut back on my internet usage because I'm still stuck with a 5Gb air card, and it's expensive to go over the limit. I was all set to go DSL, but they won't give it to me, as the usage in my area is too heavy. It would be nice if service providers would at least come up to the 20th century!

Otherwise, I'm still building my house here in SC. Outside is finally done, sold the house in FL, and am working my way through the interior stuff. My 'forest' is taking care of itself, for the most part.

THANKS CHUCK> no I don,t drive bus anymore..i,ll just say that my health wasn,t the best and being there made it worse.two days after I quit I felt soooooooooooooooooooooo much better.i was great for awhile then I got sick again.back in march I wokeup unable to breath..i spent 5 days in the hospital with a bloodclot in my lungs.i had just finished tapping my maple trees when I got sick..i came home with orders for complete bedrest..ya,two days of rest then 13 days of nonstop work in the sugarbush then four days off because it got really cold.then we worked in the bush for 20 some days nonstop.one nite we made 56 gallons of finished syrup.i got done with sugaring and sawed all summer.in oct I got a nice order and worked on that till November.on nov 19th back to the ER I went..not taking care of myself caught up with me and I spent another five days in the hospital..but in a way it was a good thing because I feel much better then I have in a very long time.now I just need to figure out a way to keep my bills payed till end of march and things will be good..knock on wood!!! I planned on finishing that lumber order then skidding a bunch of firewood trees out to keep me busy until sugaring started but I couldn,t do what I needed because of being in the hospital.i did get some skidded out but only 16/18 cords.i only have a two wheel drive tractor and can,t get in the woods now..so I guess I need to find a job to keep my bills payed for now..

I tried to leave  ::) but you'all are just too dang interesting  ;)

Sold the woodlot; lock stock and barrel. That means the mill, the cabin, two holiday trailers, the tractors, bush buggy, truck, and all the tools except one little chainsaw which I gave to my son. I had to borrow it back before a month was out but that's beside the point.

I cleared enough to buy a new motorhome so now I can tour around and check out everyone else's woodlot  8)

There is an Aesop fable about a gnat and a bull. It talks about the gnat telling the bull that he is leaving now and the bull says, "I didn't notice when you arrived and certainly won't notice or care when you leave."

I just got your birthday greeting yesterday and wanted the thank the "automated generation team" for it.  Been out with a few med problems, got a new heart,  and now have to live with the rest of the world's problems.

But we did get a new Hud-son 33 Pro sawmill last August, so I'm still in the club.  Probably got 10,000 bd ft in logs to go this spring and twenty other projects that need finishing.

Take care guys and gals,

dtody

I have been missing a long time, I think last very active 10 years ago.  I got married, built a shop with the mill, built up a farm that does about 10 k small square bales a year, had a little boy who is almost 4 and been working away at my day job.  Thinks quite busy as my wife got an undergrad degree and masters in that time too.

I stop back in once in a while but haven't been very active.  My poor mill has been parked for years now although I did get it set on a trailer last fall and hope to fire it up again soon as I need two pole barns built.

Different job, same pay - maybe a little bit more.  Only been here three weeks so still figuring it all out.  Love the house and area, seen two big bucks locking horns this morning right off the deck.  Four bucks and about 10 does in the group - they seem to come through every other day (but they were here yesterday too..  Had about 50 elk just down the road, still in the neighborhood too this morning; had about 3" of snow overnight so they seem to be pretty active today.  Got one doe with floppy ears, dangdest thing I ever seen.  Looks like a cross between a mule deer and a goat.  I have some pictures of it so will try and post soon.

Howdy y'all. I have been disappeared for quite a while now. I am glad to see a lot of the same group of folks are still around. I haven't done a lot in the woods or at the mill in a couple of years. I dug the mill out of the  mothballs the other day when someone asked me to saw a bunch of board and batten siding. Once a few folks found out the mill was running again, I started getting calls for lumber. I am looking forward to participating in the forum again. This has always been such a great place and a great bunch of folks.

Well...been gone awhile, I forget when it was I dropped off here, but it has been awhile. I retired from the Navy in 2011, wound up 60 percent disabled, started a tree service, developed bad tendonitis and could not run a chainsaw for more than a few minutes, much less climb...shut the business down and went broke for awhile, got a job in a shipyard, and have not touched the sawmill for a year or two. (that is the part that sucks.)
Couple years ago, my family got involved with a local equine program, and I dicovered a talent for training horses, so now my big pastime is taking care of horses, and teaching young kids and adults to ride and train wild horses.
We have a little bluegrass band that is part of the program, so in January I started picking banjo..I wind up on stage a couple times a month now..
And that is where it reboots a little..been missing the mill, and dropping trees anyhow....

I nagged my wife to start playing mandolin for the band..she took to it like a duck to water...few weeks later, "Honey, would you build me a steam box?"
Umm..what for?
"I want to build a mandolin."
ooooook...
That led to ordering a bunch of books on how to not ever get around to building an instrument.

soo..I am about halfway done with a banjo built with wood sawed from hurricane Irene...
yesterday I was aked by two different people within an hour to make them instruments...

Fired up the chainsaw last week and dropped a pine in the front yard...

Was eyeballing the mill yesterday...

I see WM has made some interesting new log dogs for the lt-15...I might have to have a set...

I really like the sounds that a banjo and a dulcimer produce.

I watch shows like "The Waltons" once in a while and ever so often someone will play the dulcimer.

NOTE FROM ADMIN.

I guess you didn't read the first post in this topic. It is not a place to inquire where people are or have been. It is a message on why you should NOT publicly inquire about someone. Do it behind the scenes if you have a reason to inquire.

Been a while since I posted. Had a lot going on here. 5 years ago public service electric and gas decided to double the size of the lines running through the middle of our farm. I felt like I got invaded guys in pickups everywhere bulldozers excavators. hundreds of people from environmental people looking for bog turtles in my swamps and brook to the bat people looking for a certain type of bat and even a guy looking for indian artifacts. I lost my privacy even tho I live almost a mile off road. they had to build more than a mile of road on me right through my best timber land and even went though the middle of 2 corn fields. its been a mess for 5 years now. there done now and we charged them for every tree barked up and or destroyed. But now Verizon wireless is using that road to put a cell tower on my hill. This is a good thing as it gives us a monthly income but more bulldozers. im sure you get the picture. My dad passed away 4 years ago and there are more than a hundred things I need to ask him. were figuring things out but it would have been easier to just ask him when he was here. For a guy 84 years old I don't know how he ever did what he did. the 4 acres of garden he planted and kept up on is all me my son and brother can do. plus throw in the logging ,sawmill a couple other small businesses and farm. So the last 5 years has been very eventful and busy havnt had the time to go on line much. But I do look in on the FF once in while

Sawyerfortyish;  That cell tower will provide a nice income, for sure!

In this area, (same company) they put up three towers, 3 years ago and they pay out $750.00/Mo each, so it's way more than enough to pay the taxes for the landowner.

The rate here is $9,000/year with 3% increase every year, then they renew the contract every five years!

Never here of it here, they just buy the land or plant them on public land. I know of several that sold them land for a tower.

Gee, I'm back. Not that I was missed nor that important in the scheme of things.

Had a heart transplant and a time getting used to meds and such, but now, I have a new sawmill my son got me, and raring to go.

Getting about six hours per sawmill session in when I'm at my cabin (Washington Island, WI).  Now have a tractor (JD 3038E) with forks to load logs and transport cut wood to stacks, and a couple grandsons to help.

Kinda interesting that I tried "transplant support groups" after the surgery but didn't work and I remember the person to person support that all on this forum give each other 10 times better.

Howdy folks.  Hope you're all well.  Life has been moving very swiftly for the family and I.  We're doing very well and are extremely busy.  I never did get a sawmill but still do basic woodworking around the house as time allows.  I pray you've all been well and are still doing well!  I see the weather thread is still going strong - good to know weather is still happening.  :D

Took some time off the board recently, the wood gods did not smile on me this season and my career work has asked for all my time this year.   I'll revisit my priorities this winter and decide my sawing path in the spring.  Still catching the board just in much smaller doses,

Be well FF,  you are fantastic bunch and I'm very thankful for all of you,

High fiver from over on the other glaciated coast. Yep, I still see a patch of snow on an elevated field. It's in a NE orientation (aspect) and the sun doesn't hit as hard.

Nice clear lake. Any fish there? ;D

There were lots of fish, we got a few nibbles, but no bites.  It's a stocked lake but still very early.  On Saturday, the lake was more than half covered with ice.  By Sunday afternoon, it was less than 1/4 covered.  We'll be going back at some point.  ;)

To Jeff and all our Forestry Forum fiends. I appreciate this topic more than i can say and appreciate the discreteness observed by all members with regards to people that have been away for a while. Such has certainly be the case for Mrs. Beaver and I.

In the tail end of 2018, her and i both had gastric sleeve surgery. Mine went well and i have dropped from 358 to a much lighter and more fit 238 pounds. I feel great and had no complications at all. Unfortunately such was not the case for Kristina. Almost from the start, she had complication and difficulty with recovery, most recently being hospitalized and near death form a PICC feeding tube that became infected and spread Sepsis throughout her body. The ER said she was within a day or so of dying had we not got her to the hospital. By the grace of God she got top notch care and is starting to improve. She has lost and amazing 135 pounds as well.

During this time we put our sawmill business on hold as well as many other business activities as we struggled to get Kristina back to health. I promise to be more dillegent and check in more frequently with the forum as we love and respect each and every one of you.

Kind regards to you all and look forward to seeing you all in August at the pig roast.

Been away for a while myself. Retired from the Army in February 2015, worked as a network engineer at a bank for 3 years and currently back at my old army job as a civilian. I often wonder about a lot of the friends I made here. Really did like seeing Jeff's new buddy (Sawyer). My first Shepherd had the same name. Trying to get back to my woods and back to building, got a new 16 x 40, 2 story building going up. Man this old age is showing in my ability to work hard for any length of time. Health has been good and I have missed talking with many of you out there.

Both myself and Mrs. Beaver have not been active on the forum in the past two years because life got in the way, but we sure did miss all of you and am determined to become as active as we once were again. Maybe that is the only good part about this virus, is that it gets you to slow down a bit and have time to keep in contact with those people that matter most in your life like the Foresty Forum Members.

Just a general update: The last three years have been crazy busy for us...some good some bad.

As you may recall, Kristina and I both had Gastric Sleeve Surgeries in the fall of 2018. Mine went very smoothly and i did loose a little over 100 pounds and have kept it off. I also got off  5 insulin shots a day and bp meds. Weight loss wise, Kristina wooped me big time. She went from 319 to 118, but her recovery was a nightmare thanks to excess stomach acid cause by aggrivation of one of our daughters who is always in trouble with the law. She wound up on a feeding tube directly into the heart which became infected due to poor home nurse care and contracted sepsis in April of 2019 that almost killed her and put her in ICU for 2 weeks with months of follow on visits and antibiotics. She no sooner recovered from that , then had a prescription screw up by her former doctors nurse that caused her to have an accidental overdose that once again hospitalized her. Fortunately she survived that as well and now is finally back to good health.

On the positive side, I decided to get my Auctioneer License as a source of income when i retire at age 60. I got the license 4 years ago and we opened Strauss Auctions and Sales, LLC. We purchased a 3500 square foot reception hall and converted it into our Auction house building with months of sweat equity renovations from the top on down. We have been spending a fair amount of time over the last couple years building and promoting that business.

Additionally our firewood business has jumped by leaps and bounds. it literally has doubled in size in the past 2 years and we have become one of the largest wholesalers of DNR approved firewood in Northern Indiana. We current wholesale supply close to 85 stores and campgrounds with their bundled firewood and have hundreds of private individuals that buy directly from us at retail. Honestly i never would have thought we would have done anywhere near as much firewood business as we do. Talk about being in the right place at the right time

Lastly, and as if we were not busy enough, we decided to add a second 3000 square foot building with two floors to our Auction house property and move the entire sawmill and woodworking operation into that building. Construction began this past Tuesday and once we move in we will sell our smaller 1600 sq ft building we currently operate out of. Will post a separate post on the building as i know you all like pics.

Hope all my forum friends are doing well and are in good Health. Will try my best to catch up with each of you over next few weeks.
