A gague. ;D
It could be weighing any thing from feed to scrap iron.

Not a rain gauge. Limbrat is on the right track, however it is not weighing anything.

.

Hootie sells the product by the gallon, but it is not liquid. It can be different sizes and is unusually strong for it's size. And, the price is right.  ;)

I would say there is a lengthy explanation that someone just aint willing to expound upon yet.

Since Jeff got me to put my boots on early, I figure I need to go out side and do something. So...on to the answer.........

There is not really a lengthy explanation, I saw it sitting there, asked DanG what it was and figured we could have some fun with it, so I did.  ;D

Mr. Hootie uses that old gas meter to measure steel cable. Instead of selling it by the foot, he sells it by the gallon. ;)

I guess he has the gallons calibrated to the feet. He pulls the cable up onto the table, pulls it through the dial and back to the table to coil it up.

Before anyone gets confused, the cable is sold by the foot, but measured by the gallon, in feet.  :D :D :D :D

I think Texas Ranger's got to be right!  Don't know anything about Hooties, but having met some of these guys lately, that would have been my guess, too.

Living in Alaska and having many friends who are Eskimos, I am fairly certain that no Eskimos are involved with the make, manufacture, or use of said gauge.  :D

That said, what is this thing?!?  Is it afternoon yet?  I'm really curious and am hoping to come back from church and see an answer!

I'll take credit for being the closest. it was used for measuring. When I saw the reply about southern engineering, I thuoght it was being misused for what it was made for. In the north we don't do that.

Cool.  Except I didn't see the answer when I made my earlier post?  Either I was still asleep or something fishy was going on...

Thanks for the fun, Radar67.

No funny-business, Warbird.  You just snoozed right on past it. :D :D

Now, y'all need to unnerstand that Mr. Hootie ain't so crude as to pull that cable through there.  He hooks it to a collapsable spool at the end of the table, and flips a switch.   When the machine has coiled up the appropriate gallons of cable, he turns that switch off and turns on another one.  That one activates a big hydraulic shear that cuts the cable off.  Mr. Hootie is the biggest cable dealer in these parts, and his prices are really good for a cut-to-length operation.  He has a big selection of sizes and qualities, and also carries a huge line of clamps, thimbles, hooks and other rigging supplies.  He has trucker chains and tie-down straps, as well as bow thrusters for your Destroyer and arresting cables for your Aircraft Carrier, if your needs run in that direction. ;D :D

Hmm, bow thrusters. I'll keep that in mind. :D

Stew,

Heaven forbid that we would get confused about a foot-gallon!

Well, there is such a thing as a foot-pound.  Why can't there be a foot-gallon ???.
