50 years ago today, PatD and I began our journey to forever....together. smiley_love
Just as a sorta introduction to my early life, I left home in July '61 at age 17 never to live at home again. There was not a problem except my folks could not afford to support me anymore so I had to learn to fend for myself. I went to work for Southern Bell Telephone Company in October, '62, but when your pay is only $60 per week, you have no money. This redneck was one broke dude, but I had a job.
I met Pat on the CB radio around the 1st of January, '63 and somehow found out that her birthday was January 13th. No way could I ask her out before her birthday because then I would have to buy her a birthday present. :o Did I mention that I had no money ??? Anyway, I probably made myself a nuisance around her place. Heck, they had food, so sometimes I got invited for supper.
We continued to see each other until toward the end of March when her Dad decided that he had seen enough of me. My instructions were to not come back. Pat called me at work Monday morning and we decided over the phone to get married that Friday, the 29th of March. :o That week we gathered birth certificates, blood tests, and whatever else that we thought we needed to prove our age and get married. Mississippi's marriage laws were too strict, so we decided to hop over to Alabama.
I picked her up from her work Friday morning and away we went in a 1959 Pink Edsel Convertible. I had been living in a rooming house and had no apartment, so my friend Frank, agreed to find us a place before we got back Saturday afternoon. Since my parents had never met Pat, we would go there Saturday morning for an introduction. Everything went off as planned. We got back to Jackson, found Frank who took us to our apartment, and the rest is kinda history. Ten months later we were parents.
The first piece of mail that arrived after we got married came on Wednesday. It was a bounced $10 check from the city of Jackson for the water deposit. Did I mention that I was broke and had no money ??? ???
...
I use to make more than $60 a week and still be broke. ;D I want to congratulate both of you on this day.
Happy Anniversary Lynn and Pat. May you have many, many more. :)
Congratulations!
Congratulations to the both of you! May the next 50 go well. Keith
Happy 50th to Pat and Lynn! smiley_clapping smiley_love horn_smiley
What a great story of your beginning together. Hope today is especially memorable for the two of you. :)
Congatulations to the both of you.
Allan
Happy Anniversary. :) Tammy and I also met via the C.B. Radio. The internet of the 70's :D
Congrats, MM. Nowdays, it seems like it is only us old farts that are staying together. May you two have many more happy years together. What are you 2 planning to do/done to celebrate?
Thanks for the well wishes.
I am not in favor of a reception, etc. where everyone comes and eats your cookies and drinks your kool-aid so tonight we will have the entire family together and will go to a favorite fish house.
And since we started this thing alone, on the 13th we will visit the only state that we have not been to. We will get on an airplane (now that is a step for me) and fly to Hawaii. There we get on a cruise ship which moves to a different island at night and you spend that next day doing the touristy stuff. We will spend 7 days doing this and fly back home on the 21st.
Lynn, that's a great story! My congratulations to you and Pat on your anniversary! I hope that y'all have a great time in Hawaii.
Scott
Congratulations on 50 years! Great story that you are sharing. I suspect there were a few people who said it could never last. You show what happens when real love is in a marriage.
We have never been to Hawaii, but friends tell me it is fantastic. Enjoy!

Post pics. :)
Been to HI about 10 times. Very beautiful and very expensive. On the big island, make sure you take a visit to the North Shore, as there is less of a crowd. I'll dig through my records here and see if I can locate some business cards of places you may want to check out.
The one thing I would want to see in Hawaii is the volcano. :)
Congratulations Lynn and Pat! Sounds like you've come a long way since 1963! :)
Congrats on the 50. "beenthere, done that" couple year ago.
And our first year was on $44 a week.
50th is good excuse as any for a party.
Congratulations! I'm sitting here gazing out the window at a flock of Cedar Waxwings sharing juniper berries with each other. So, I know you and your wife have shared many experiences through good and bad times, but that's why we're married so long as to share and help one another.
We saw the Arizona Memorial when out there 30 years ago. A combat veteran of the battle gave his insight of the horrors of that day as we stood quietly in reverence of those entombed. When you get back let us know if there are any Veterans left giving their testimonials, a tribute to real Patriots.
Wow, congrats! Great story.
Wonderful story, congratulations.
don't forget your sunscreen and floppy hats! Take pix of both! :D
Neat story ,congratulations indeed .
Congratulations to the both of you!
Diamond Head would be on my list of places to visit!
Well I'm certain this would not apply but worth mention .
A few years back this young female controls engineer of whom I took under wing was getting married and going to honeymoon in Hawaii .I talked to her like a Dutch uncle .
I said Amanda ,I know you're young and in love .However it might be years and years before you ever get back to the islands .Don't make your only remberance of the trip starring at the ceiling of a motel room . ;)
Awesome! Congrats!
I know you were young but did ya all have Have CB handles back then. My son and his redneck friends all have CB's again even though they all got smart phones, which most likely have a cb app. Hmmm now I gotta go see. lazerdan
Al sometimes you has no couth.
Congratulations, that is a neat story. I remember those days too, 44 bucks a week for my first job. :D
Way to go Lynn and Pat! 8) 8)
Ya'll got me beat by 22 years.....and I even cheated by using two wives to get to where I'm at! :D
Lynn, it's hard for me to fathom how this thread that YOU started can have 27 replies so far and not even one mention of GRITS!
One has. :) :D :D
Well, I'll be. Happy 50th you to. Love the engagement story to. Look out Hawaii, here you two go. Have a great time. Sure enough deserve it. :) 8)
I remember $50 a week, and it was more than 8 hr days. But of course it was not a steady on my own job. Heck I was only 7. Took every cent from the fall harvest to buy that bike I wanted. Only way I was gonna get it to. :D
It's a great love story Magicman.
I was curious to how long it took for the Father In Law to assimilate? :D

Well sometimes that happens nephew .I think I have total of 45 with two wives not at the same time though .
In my case had wifey number two came alone before the prior there would have only been one .
Now come on now I got at least a little couth .I mean after all I didn't get descriptive .
Actually Amanda had a wonderfull time in the islands and did take in the sights .I'm sure Mr and Mrs Magic will also have a grand time as well .
Wonderful story.
congrats Lynn and Pat!
In the words of Phil Robertson I hope you two are Happy happy happy.

I like them GRITS. ;D
Congrats to you and Pat. The next 50 should be easier sense you have all that experience. Have fun on your trip and be sure and post some good photos. bg

The fact was that my FIL was legally blind and would have never willingly given up his cook, housekeeper, and chauffeur. He had to remember that it was he that suggested that Pat could go out with me in the first place. He and I enjoyed a very close relationship and never ever had a cross word.
That's worth celebrating for sure :).
I got started in life 5 years later than you did and I was 5 years older when I got married. It'll be #40 for Barb and me this fall.
First job for me was at age 17 working the greenchain in a sawmill. Union wages - $2.13 per hour.
Congratulations! I too am anxious to hear about your island adventure. Safe travels.
Congratulations Lynn and Mrs. MM on the 50th. Wife and I will hit 36 years in December. My mom and dad went to the Islands a few year back and had a great time. I know ya'll will too!
There was much happiness and joy last night as we all (19) ate too much.

The picture was poor, but the Catfish and fixin's which included; hushpuppies, fries, turnip greens, marinated onions, cole slaw, Mexican cornbread, fried dill pickles, & onion rings were "Delish".
Congratulations to a wonderful couple. You both are an inspiration to many. Hope to see you in June....
Lordy Lordy, Ya'll loped.Won't last till the water gets hot. :D How many times did ya'll hear that one? ???
I got married 2 days after my 17th birthday,Be 44 years this coming June,Wife sister still say's it won't last ;D
A big Conrats to the both of you,Praying for many more for ya'll to come.
Fifty years ago this week, the number one song was, 'Our Day Will Come' by Ruby and the Romantics. How appropriate! It even says, "our dreams have magic"!! Here are the lyrics for you two lovebirds:
Our day will come
And we'll have everything.
We'll share the joy
Falling in love can bring.
No one can tell me
That I'm too young to know (young to know)
I love you so (love you so)
And you love me.
Our day will come
If we just wait a while.
No tears for us -
Think love and wear a smile.
Our dreams have magic
Because we'll always stay
In love this way
Our day will come.
(Our day will come; our day will come.)

Thanks Roxie. Pat said that that (Mr. Tom) fits us well. :)

Happy anniversary, you two!
Congratulations! Hope you have a great time in Hawaii.
Congratulations Lynn and Pat,very inspiring story, I will let my girls read it when they hit 25 or so. I got laid off from my factory job in 1990 complaining that it was hard to meet a nice girl that wanted to settle down and I went back married thirteen weeks later. We were old enough that we didn't have to elope although you make it sound like fun.

So many these days seem to not play for keeps. Glad you two found each other.
Congrats to you and Wonder Woman. An Edsel ? Love you both !!!!
Happy anniversary to you and Pat. My starting pay in 1965 with Ma Bell was $59.50 a week. Line gang, on the road, away from home most of the time.
Congratulations to you and Pat.
Happy aniversary,and many more!
Happy anniversary to Lynn and his bride...from Banjo
Great story about your early life congradulations .
We are on our final countdown. The lists have been checked and the clothes are packed. I checked the airline today to verify our reservations....again. Everything is in order.
I realize that we still have another day and will not leave until Saturday, but we are both antsy.
I hope you two newlyweds have a great time, Lynn. smiley_love
I looked for my list of "contacts" and places to see more than a few times and can't put my hands on it, so you're on your own....One place you should go to is the Dole pineapple plantation over on the north side of the big island.
wonderful story have a great time on your honey moon dont forget the sun screen and want to see lots of pic when you get home ;D ;D
We won't ask you to compare it to a trip elk hunting... ;D
It also cost a heck-of-a-lot-more than an elk hunt. Of course, Pat has accompanied me and hunted antelope, deer, & elk so we have spent plenty of hunting time together.
We will have to leave home about 2:00AM tomorrow to catch the flight out of New Orleans. We then fly to Atlanta and will arrive in Honolulu at 3:000PM after crossing 6 time zones so I have no idea what time it will be anywhere. Tomorrow will be a long day.
All of your friends in the other 49 states will be thinking of you two. Have a great time. ;D And than some.
While you two lie on the beach enjoying the sunshine, remember the rest of us slaving away making sawdust.....NAW, don't do that, just enjoy yourselves...
Congratulations and have fun on your trip
Hope you have a great trip and I won't mind one bit if you think of me looking at 3" of ice and snow and smile while you're laying on the beach watching the waves roll in :D!
I hope you have a safe/good/ fun time, it sounds like a great trip!
mh
Have a great trip. You both deserve it. :)
Well done! Congratulations to both of you.

it gets simple. :D :D :D.
Congratulations and have a safe trip! The Edsel was a great car at the wrong time......
Congratulations love birds. Don't worry about enjoying Hawaii. It's fascinating. Valleys with tropical rain forest on one side and desert on the other. Crazy Waikiki and calm Kauai. The only problem is leaving. :D

ALOHA from two tired and weary but also relaxed and refreshed travelers.
Tired, because we left Honolulu Saturday evening at 4:30 and flew nonstop to Atlanta landing at 7:00 Sunday morning, making it a red eye flight in the truest sense. (six time zones) We then flew to New Orleans and made the two hour drive home. smiley_dizzy Weary, because we vacationed full time while we were there. Relaxed, because we left the "drama" at home and never once mentioned any situation that would distract us from the beauty and enjoyment of the trip, and Refreshed, because even though we never discussed any situations, a clear mind has a way of looking ahead with a clearer vision.

Our ship was the Pride of America, the largest United States flagged cruise ship. We sailed from Honolulu, Oahu to Kahului, Maui where we spent two days and rented a car. One of our side trips was a drive to Hana where we were amazed by the trees, flowers, water falls, and other plant growth.
I have no idea the species of many of the trees.

Before it was called the Big Island, it was called the Orchid Island.
This is also the Volcano Island, but the volcanoes are inactive at the time, so alas, we saw no actually flowing lava.
The crater is fenced off, but smoke and steam constantly rises from the fissures.
This is a huge "lava tube" that we walked through. Flowing lava cools on the outside and continues to flow in on the inside forming these tubes.

The cruise ship circled the island at night as we sailed from Hilo to Kona so the glow from the volcano is a sight to behold.

Thanks for sharing your trip and glad to hear you had a great time!

Looks like great times, MM!
I'm HAPPY for you and Pat, Magic. So glad ya'll had a GREAT time. Not one pic did I see Grits......so I know you're glad to be home. :)
Absolutely loved your pictures! smiley_thumbsup
It was so interesting to hear about the Hawaiian culture from the natives themselves. There was so much that they share that is not in books or at least I did not remember. Maybe "offended" is the wrong word or too strong of a word, but they do not like the fact that so much hype is given to Pearl Harbor while seemingly ignoring the other 6 military bases that were also bombed.
We also saw where many movies were made such as Jurassic Park, Blue Hawaii, Fantasy Island, Hunger Games, 50 First Dates, etc.
If anyone is interested in this trip, I would be happy to share prices and contact information. Just send me a PM.
Great pictures and a great story! I neglected to congratulate the two of you before, so I'll do it now: Congratulations! 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
Welcome home folks. Looks like a great time, great scenery, great entertainment, food......lots of good memories for years to come.
Thanks for taking us along. :)
I'm glad to hear you had a great time. Rest up, the sawing world is waiting for ya.
This tree looks almost familiar so I looked it up.

ōhiʻa lehua which is closely related to our local pohutukawa and rata trees. Flower is very similar etc.
The Polynesian culture is also pretty familiar, as the local Maori and the Hawaiians share common ancestry in the polynesian islands. Some headed north and end up in Hawaii, some South and ended up in NZ. So the earth ovens, the weaving and a lot of language is very similar. The tropical flowers remind me of the Cook Islands, we a going back there later in the year, for similar reasons ;)
Ian
welcome home love the pic so did the wife
Ian, One of the advantages of taking a "canned" bus tour is to learn about the ancestry and history of the locals. We were fortunate in picking two good ones who described much as you said. They devised navigational ways that allowed them to travel back and forth across the Pacific. :o
Here are a couple of pictures that were on my cell phone.

Aren't the flowers unbelievable? One time we were in Honolulu doing an installation. My son says "ah the city that doesn't stink"! So many flowers you can smell them everywhere. Welcome home. At least it's not the middle of winter.
Congrats on your anniversary and thank you for all the great pictures. I'll bet the two of you had a reat time.

Yes, after all the years since I've been there, I can still remember the flowers and the wonderful fragrance they emitted. MM, I gotta ask, didya see any woodmizers? ;D

Nice trees for the birds to hide in, but not much for lumber, eh? :D

Happy Anniversary Lynn and Pat. Awesome pictures. Looks like you had a real good time. Wife keeps telling me she want to go there. Your pictures may have just convinced me. Perhaps next year. This year we are going to Tennessee

David hope you are feeling better! Maybe the time has given you the opportunity to plan a new bench or decide on an planer.
A curved bench may require multiple thin cuts placed in a form and laminated. Not the type of work I remember seeing from the Bench Whisperer.
I'm feeling better but the wife is trying to get over it now. Our Doctor said there has been 6 or 7 different kinds of Flu going around this year.
I was visiting doc recently with some congestion stuff. He indicated he had diagnosed several of folks with flu recently. He stated that some folk that had shot 6 or so months ago were getting flu now as the vacine was wearing off.
Magicman... Have had a good time looking at your Hawaii photos and reading about the trip itself. Brought back a lot of fond memories. My wife and I had never had a honeymoon... married in 1976... we planned and took almost an identical vacation as you and you're wife, back in 2006... our 30th. We were on the Pride of Aloha tho. We had a super once in a lifetime adventure... looks like you did too. Happy 50th.
BTW... the locals might have had thoughts on Pearl getting so much attention vs. the other bases but, whew, it was the highlight of the trip for me. My wife would live in Hawaii in a heartbeat... if it wasn't so $$$$.

So today makes 51 years on our trip to forever together. smiley_love

Congratulations to a truly nice couple, (especially Pat) :D.
Congratulations on your 51st, Magicman! And to the Magicwoman as well.
Interesting story. Seems you two had some "magic" right from the git-go.
My grandparents (Ma's side) were fortunate enough to celebrate their 75th together, both lived into their upper 90's. Hope you two have many, many more together as well (and that she is doing well after the back surgery).
Congratulations MM! Another job well done. My wife and I will hit our 43rd this Sept. Keep on doing what you do, it must be working!
Congratulations to you both. One of these years, we need to get together for an anniversary party. We hit 55 in a couple of weeks. Already bought her a new car.. ;D
Congratulations, Lynn & Pat. We hope for many more for you folks. You're both special.

Congrats to both you.
Yes, y'all have done well.
Thanks all. :)
No pictures, but we went out to eat. She had Steak Oacar, which is a filet' with crabmeat and sauce on top. I got catfish with crab stuffing. It was pricy, but we enjoyed our special time together. smiley_love
I have not always done everything right, but at least I got that one right. :)
Congratulations to two wonderful people. It truly is an accomplishment to be married for 51 years. Glad you two had a nice dinner. Your love story almost tops ours. You both are blessed with a wonderful family, good health and a great retirement. Happy #51 Lynn and Pat. 8) smiley_applause

Congratulations are once again in order!
:) :) :)
Happy anniversary to you and Miz Pat.
I thought it was funny in your opening thread where you left Mississippi to go to Ala to get married. Mom and Dad lived in N. Fla and Dad was in the army and stationed at Ft. Benning in Columbus Ga. He came in on a 3 day pass over Labor Day weekend to get married. He borrowed his merchant marine brother's car. Uncle Jr. was out to sea and had left the car with their sister's husband in Pensacola. Dad, Mom and Grandma (Mom's mother) loaded up in Uncle Jr's car and went to Mississippi to get them married. First Justice of the Peace would not marry them because they were 17 and Dad did not have a parent present to sign for him. So they drove to next county and another JP and Grandma lied and told them she was Dad's mom and signed for him and they got got married. Subterfusion at work again.
I don't know why they did not go to Ala since they passed through LA by Mobile on the way to Miss. Fla would not let them marry without 3-4 day wait that Dad did not have so that was the reason they went to Miss.
Anyway, enjoy the day and fond memories with all the family and friends you can put up with.
Of course this topic is 5 years old but about the age thing. At the time the age requirements in Mississippi was 21. In Alabama it was 21 (male) and 18 (female). Between Monday and Friday we had secured the required blood test and I had a signed and notarized affidavit from my parents giving consent. Pat was 18 and she had her birth certificate so all of our legal requirements were in order.
Today is our 55th anniversary. :)
Happy Anniversary, Pat and Lynn. Many don't seem to last as long. :)
Happy Anniversary Mr Lynn and Ms Pat
Happy Anniversary
Happy Anniversary, Pat and Lynn. May you have many more.
Congrats Lyn & Pat, this is a cool thread to see bought up again :)
Since it started we have also eloped, and gotten married on a Tropical Island. Not made 55 years yet though. ;);D
Our wedding came about when I said to Lil one day, "Only way I'm getting married again is barefoot on a tropical beach".
She called my bluff. ;D
Happy anniversary. I just saw this thread and enjoyed reading about your Hawaii trip and read with anticipation of FIL's reaction after you and your bride returned from your elopement. I am glad that you and he "never had cross words".
Happy anniversary to you guys, have a good time ! Don
Happy anniversary to two of my fine friends. Glad to see this thread come up, it keeps me out of the dog house for forgetting. Ours is a couple of weeks out, 59 and counting...
Happy Anniversary Pat and Lynn. First time I've seen this thread.
My sister was born March 29th, 1963.
Thanks from Pat and me to everyone for the Well Wishes.
Jack, that means that we are almost kinfolks.....almost. :)

Good for y'all!
Well today is March 29th again and marks our 57th Elopement Anniversary. Who would have thought that we would be spending it 'Corn-teened' but here we are. Last evening I ordered a 24oz Ribeye with fixings that we shared as our Official Anniversary meal. food3
(Look back at page 1 for the beginning of our story. smiley_love )
Happy Anniversary, Pat and Lynn. God has blessed you.
Happy Anniversary 8). Hope you have a great day.
Have a good one, you two.
Happy Anniversary Lynn and I am putting Miz Pat in for a community service award for taking you off the streets where you might have done some real damage otherwise.
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Davis:
Sixacresand wrote "Happy Anniversary, Pat and Lynn. God has blessed you."
I agree and hope He continues to bless you folks.
If you folks make it to 70 it will prove that you would rather fight than switch.
Gerald
Happy Anniversary Lynn and Pat. Good on ya!!
Not too many over 50s anymore. I wish you many more.
Stan
Happy Anniversary to you both :)
Lynn, thanks for bringing this up. Reminds me that Nelda and I have one coming up in a couple of weeks, you help me remember and don't get sent to the dog house. 61 years for us. I can't remember when she wasn't a part of my life.. ;D
Congratulations hope you two have a great day. 8)
Happy anniversary to you both,
best wishes on your special day
D
Happy 57th, may the two of you have many more.

Thanks all, but no worry about who is ahead because this is no race. We all just want our horses to cross the finish line. ;D
You too, Oliver.
Congrats!!!!
Thanks!! PatD and I celebrated our 58th last week. smiley_love
Once more, thanks MM for reminding me. 62 years for us on the 18th. At least we aren't quarranteened like last year.
Just read all this. WoW Magicman, that's something! You too Piney and Oliver! i'm only 13 years in (14 years April 25th), but looking or I should say hoping to join you all some day (I'd be 105 to make it 63)....... ;D ;D ;D
I remember reading a quote from a famous actress who's husband was also famous that made it over 50 years and she was asked if she ever considered divorce, she replied "never, but I did consider murder several times". Of course it was meant as a joke, kinda, but what you 3 have accomplished isn't easy by any means, but it shows commitment and keeping your word to each other. Congrats!
Congrats, 44, for us tomorrow . :)
44 for us, 6 mo from this fri.
Missed this before Happy Anniversary to you, pat, and all the other celebrants here. We have our 44th at the end of this month (the last fools in April.) ;D
Sometimes I think its a wonder she didn't shoot me years ago, but sometimes I think if I had shot her when I wanted to, I would be out by now. :D
And here the wife and I are newlyweds in comparison. We ended up getting hitched on the same day date as the most popular Ford oil filter for 40yrs. 5-15-15. And SHE is the one that picked it. I didn't tell her until after we got married, and I like it because that it's an easy date for me to remember!
Congratulations MM, may you both be enjoying each other's company for many years to come!
Yup, 59 years ago today PatD and I began our journey to forever together. smiley_love
