My first ones were cheap because I had to pay for them, I got what I paid for as usual. My present pair supplied by WorkSafe are from Oticon and are a world of difference. I can control both the level of conversation and background noise with the paddles or with my cell phone via Bluetooth, I can check the battery levels and even find them as long as they are turned on (battery door closed) and the batteries are good. The only complaints are difficulty separating conversation from background noise and determining the direction of the source. And don't leave them where the mutt can get at and chew them, dogs seem to like ear wax. Yuck!

I tried hearing aids once, all they did was increase the volume for everything!  I should check with Costco.  All my specialist doctors are in Chesterfield County, where I worked the last 13 years of my working life.  It was easier to go to work for ½ day and go the doc appointment, not as much vac/sick time used.  Now I combine doctor visits with Costco, and other shopping.  Plus lunch at Angelo's Italian Pizza in the Midlothian area.

I have a handheld remote unit (which I do not use) which allows me to adjust the volume, change the three preset programs, and use bluetooth but mine are before me being able to computer adjust them.

I get mine from the VA. They are Phonex. The latest set that I got are adjusted through an app on my phone. I've heard good results with those from Costco though.

About what my phone app does, volune, 3 programs, balance. Wish I could adjust the individual frequencies like they do on the computer.

My wife is an audiologist and has been for 21 years.  She owns her own practice and her income is half of the support for our family.  I do not support over the counter hearing aids.  My wife has 2 masters degrees and a doctorate in speech and hearing.  Part of what you are paying for at an audiologist is the knowledge they have about hearing.  My wife has had many people come in for a hearing test but she has referred them to an ENT because she suspected their hearing loss was caused by a tumor.  At the least, do yourself a favor and go see an audilogist for testing.  Let them actually evaluate your hearing loss so you will know why you have a loss.  Some folks my wife has referred to ENT have had surgery which restored their hearing.  The cost for testing is minimal, but it is being done by someone who knows more about hearing than a tech at Costco.  Places like Southwestern Hearing may advertise a free test.  The test there is free because they are not allowed to charge by law.  Good luck.

My FIL is cheap. And I do mean cheap.
He tried those cheap ones.
He wears the ones that cost more now.  ;)
He's very careful about getting rain in it. Even wears a ball cap sideways to keep the rain out of it.
I stepped into the shower with both in place. Took a couple seconds to realize what I did. I put them over a floor vent and left them overnight to dry out. They still work.

Another thing a good hearing test does is determine what frequencies you have loss in and how much.  Then the audiologist sets your hearing aids at the appropriate levels for each frequency.  The goal is to get you to have somewhat normal hearing.  Just putting something in your ear that amplifies all sound is not what you want.  Something new for my wife in the last 5 years is working with cochlear implants.  People come to see her for testing.  She determines if they are a candidate for cochlear implant.  If they are a candidate, they go to a surgeon who does the implant.  Then after a while they return to her to have the implant activated.

My wife has cochlear implants in both ears. She was basically completely deaf at low frequencies. For instance in the spring when the ruffed grouse are drumming, I don't care how close one was, Jen absolutely could not hear them.
She's had a marked improvement with the implants.

Seems to me, you're gonna need to wear 2 ball caps at the same time to keep the rain out.  Going from gangsta to goofy.  🤤
My father once said, "This is my son who wanted to grow up and become a doctor.  So far, he's only become a doctor."

Why not just wear a hat?  I wear a hat all summer to protect my ears so the dermatologist dosent have to freeze as much off every year.  Got a wool felt one with ear flaps I plan to use this winter.
