bogie trouble

This happens pretty quick if a tire chain walks off to one side.  The wheel isn't visible from the cab and the operator didn't see till it was too late.  Less than a day and the chain wore through the axle housing and the wheel/planetary fell off.

I'm hoping someone can point me to a salvage yard or knows of someone with a junk machine.  I'll need a whole bogie housing, and want to avoid the expense of a new one.  The machine is a 99 or 2000 Ponsse caribou.   One thing is pretty certain, we will be putting short chains holding the tire chains from slipping.  (Like in barbenders pic)

dose he still have a job? never seen that before. did hear of one running the tracks loose and wearing into the top of the housing

We had this problem on a timberjack one time and we put thee eye bolts in rim and hooked short chain to them and when the chain started working it got pulled to the outside .i also seen some eco tracks one time modified to only go around one wheel but i dont know how they kept them tight .

Does it run the same bogie as a 1270D harvester? I only know most bogies are made by NAF, there's a 1270 harvester a place south of me is parting out.

I have no idea how interchangeable parts are between Ponsse machines but there's an Ergo for parts or whole in Pellston  listed in the Northern Michigan Craiglist.  It's been there on and off for quite a while now.  They originally wanted to sell the whole thing but lately have been willing to part it out.  It's got fire damage to the cab end.

This has lighter bogies than the ergo or 1270.  I may have found a used one, fingers crossed.

Ugh >:( Stuff happens, that's for sure. We had a guy let his tracks get so loose that they wore through the bogie :o That IS visible from the cab and quite noisy too I'm told. He doesn't work here anymore ::)

Did you find a housing yet? How would someone let the chain run that crooked on the tire and not realized it was hitting the housing just wondered? Glad I don't own a set to have to worry about it.

Working on getting one shipped over from Europe.  Hope it works out.
  The chain was tightened wrong (not by us) and it happened between morning startup and lunch.  The way the machine is setup you cannot see the front tires without standing up in the cabin.  I'm sure between all the different noises going on while running it wasnt easy to hear a chain rubbing.  Pricey accident that won't happen again I assure you.

On another note.  Eco tracks around a single wheel are supposed to work pretty good.  Tighten the same way as when around a bogie.  I've hear you can also tighten them up with the tire aired down, then when brought to full pressure they are banjo tight.   Rough ride though compared to chains.

Would it be feasible to weld it? It would likely break again in time, but...just thinking out loud. Did it bust the stub axle or anything else when it fell off?

So thats why Peller was so grumpy last week.. You'd think a guy would hear a racket like that in the cab. It's pretty quiet otherwise in the ponsse cab.

Here is a picture of how my chains are attached from a little closer- there are 4 separate sections that are bolted together, when they are assembled they are larger in diameter than the flange of the rim. The assembly then floats inside the rim flange and the chains are attached to it.

Thanks for the pic barbender.  Maybe make a set of those up.   We re in the process of getting it welded.  Took a while to figure out what kind of metal it is made of in order to get the correct rod.  Hopefully have it done next week sometime.

Couldn't get the weld to work.  We were able to get 889 rod to weld the housing which is nodular cast., as well as proper preheat/cooling procedure.  However the weld is not working.  We were told working with such a piece of cast is a shot in the dark. 

Back to square one.  Does anyone know of a NAF bogie housing too fit a ponsse caribou?  I'm pretty sure Ponsse cobra and also some rottne machines used the same setup. 

Any salvage yards with CTL equipment or dealers in your area that handle used parts?  I would appreciate any leads, and thanks to those who have already pm'ed with info.

it looks a lot like my rottne. except the spindle housing bolts on. if you think a rottne will work call rickard at 724 349 9240 he is the rottne guy. he dose have some used parts

Call ALPA Equipment in New Brunswick as well. They sold lots of Ponsee's.
Rottne SMV have their own design bogie boxes. I doubt it would be a match.
Rottne F14 were the same as Ecolog 574 and may be the same as other machines.
Valmet and John deere also used NAF. It would be good if you could find out the NAF bogie box number. I think if you look on the diff, you'll find the type of bogie box that is used, and with that you'd be able to find a match.

If you are going to start going farther afield in the search .you might try timberparts in new brunswick also they scrap lots of machines.THey have a website with all their contact info.If it was the same as a john deere 1270 i also know where there are two machines scrapped in southern nova scotia

Thanks guys.  The info I had it should be the same as a rottne f9.  I will try those places you mentioned.  I found one in the UK but am not having the best luck communicating with them. Still trying though.

There were a few F9's sold in Atlantic Canada.

One was in Cape Breton for quite some time, and another was in PEI.

In that case, call Rottne Canada. The F9 in Cape Breton was either traded in or sold last year from what I heard.

Best of luck, I did not think of the F9.

Its  on a boat heading this way.   Must be the slow boat from china though.   I was thinking maybe the end of the month we would have it but its not looking promising.  Haven't heard from the customs broker recently.

Just happened to pick up this thread by a google search. Did you purchase the bogies from Jas P Wilson? were you satisfied with your experience as far as what you thought you were getting and what you actually got? It is understandable on the sea shipping. Just curious of any other thoughts you might have about the experience.

Yes it was Jas P Wilson.  The guy I dealt with was named Keith Freemantle.   They were very helpful, communication was fine, and the parts were what I wanted and as advertised. 
Shipping did end up being very slow.   I pay the extra for air freight if it ever happens again.
 There was some rust internally but it wasn't a big deal since I had a whole unit full of parts.  May have been from salt air during shipping or sitting in Wilson's yard.  Not sure
