Title: 2 in 1 Sharpener Clones
Post by: NorCalKuma on July 12, 2019, 10:04:52 AM
I noticed eBay sellers are offering 2 in 1 Stihl and pferd sharpener clones.  Their are not a lot of reviews because it seems to be a new item. The few reviews I could find were positive.  Most chinese clones usually have less quality but almost always, at least in my experience,  they do what their supposed to. I figure for $13 Im going to give one a try.

Funny how so many of those clones show the sharpener being used incorrectly, with the tool at 90˚ to the bar. One of them even photo-shopped in some sparks like what you'd expect to see if you were using a grinding wheel.

That's up to you. I was contemplating doing the same thing with a bar dresser, and assuming I'd be swapping the file out for something decent. The two reasons I didn't, is I don't like supporting China, and their theft of western ideas. Secondly, I don't trust them to make the plastic bits decent so they last. I ended up getting an Oregon that was made in Germany. It was ~$25 more, but I knew I could count on the quality.

Overall, it's small expense for a product that'll last years with decent care(not counting consumables), and the cheaper price of the knockoffs isn't quite as cheap when you factor in buying decent new files for it(I don't think China knows how to make a good file).

The Chinese / America thing has been discussed for years and everyone that is anti China owns or uses things that are from there.

The pics are funny. Not untypical of eBay.

Yes, the quality may, or may not, be there.  But, people who actually have touched and used them gave positive reviews.  Again, for $13 it will be interesting to check out, for me.  If its garbage, I will share that to let others know. In other words, I will take one for the team ;)

Like I mentioned earlier, I dont expect the quality to be the same but most likely it will sharpen the chain and get the job done. After all, the chain cuts firewood, not fine furniture.

Stay tuned because it will take weeks to arrive.... lol

I have seen those and would most likely get one if i had any need for one.
I did bought bar dresser from china for $5 and it works like charm.
If i can get something for 1/5th of the price and it actually works, it really is a no brainer to me.

We get what we pay for when purchasing Chinese made goods.
Yes a $.99 egg beater will sort of work, but how well before it goes for a flight out the kitchen window?

NorCalKuma I am looking forward to your review of the item.
I recently bought the real deal and am expecting it to last for years. Cheers

Its impossible for many people not to comment about Chinese stuff.   Like I mentioned earlier, its all been said before and for many many years.

What would be helpful is real experience about the item being discussed.  Or at least an intelligent observation.  Allar made a much appreciated and valued comment.

I also have the "real deal", pferd for my .325 chain, that cost 3 times more. Will compare to two.

All things considered, it's worth taking a chance sometimes.  Then you'll know, and then we'll know.  I do the same type of thing from time to time.  It's a way to satisfy your curiosity  and you're not risking a lot.  I'm looking forward to hearing the results.

The problem with "real experience" with Chinese stuff is it can vary widely. It's all generic, and sourced from various shops that range from "competent" to "waste of time and material". Brands are virtually non existent. If they don't believe in their product enough to put their name on it, why should I believe in it enough to buy it?

Like it or not, China is known for junk. Nothing they do is better than the western alternative. You can make the argument that buying Chinese provides better bang/buck, but at this point in time, they'll never win purely on quality. Also, there's much whining about "corporations" sourcing stuff overseas, and "something" should be done about those evil corporations. The mirror will show what needs to be done about those evil corporations, though that ship sailed years ago. People decided to sell out their neighbors to save a couple dollars, myself included, though I /try/ to do what I consider the Right Thing™

:D They've had gadgets and gizmos for decades to file chainsaw chains .You can do it with just a file if you know how for that matter .It's not rocket science .I don't know why people make such a big deal about it  ???

There are 2 ways to sharpen a chain saw that work well and are not expensive.

1.  A good quality file. (2nd best)

2.  The Timberline sharpener, Which is in my opinion the hands down (throw the rest in the garbage where they belong) BESTESTEST sharpener that exists. When you can sharpen a brand NEW chain to a better performance level than any thing you ever used before it kind makes you take notice.

I have tried many different systems and gizmos. NONE are worth the energy to type a description or a mention of the mediocrity of the better ones or the out right garbage of the rest.

https://www.timberlinesharpener.com/ (https://www.timberlinesharpener.com/)

Order one and you will be able quit whining about sharpening quality for ever.

This is 90+% of everything the other brand is. The files and plastic handles feel very nice, good quality, as does the overall product feel. Even the plastic cover feels good.

This knockoff does weigh slightly less. It is for a smaller chain, pferd is .325 and this is .3/8lp,  so the round files are thinner and the 4 guides are also slightly slimmer. The plastic handles/file holders may also weigh slightly less but it does not feel or look like it.  And they both open and close very similarly.

Regarding being called "bitchy".... :) :) :)

Update, the pics should be better quality and be able to be enlarged. What is necessary to do that?

I'll be interested in hearing your use reports  :^)

As far as the photos go... I don't see a way to blow them up with the forum software. You'd probably have to do it with image manipulation software on your computer, keeping the absolute dimensions 650x487.

I bought a Pferd when they came out and it worked fine. I gifted to a friend of mine when he bought a place in the country years ago. I find for my setup that when we are cutting firewood I don't have time to hand sharpen chains. I have two guys that trade me labor for some hunting rights and when they are cutting wood I want to keep them busy so if they dull a chain I give them another saw and I just switch the chain for a sharp one and we keep going. I am usually busy running the skid steer or helping with the splitter. I can grind the chains at a later time at the shop.

I will try to remember.  lol  No plans to cut for awhile. Its 100 degrees now and will have at it in the fall. I placed it on a lightly used chain last night and it matches up with the cutters and raker height.

Hard to see in the pics but the round files are nice and have the swirl to them. The flat file is the same size and thickness is the other. The guides have the same hash marks.  Their is also the same small triangle on the pivot pin that holds the door on the end of the handle.

fwiw - Their are many ebay reviews/comments now as many more have sold in the past two weeks.

Most product we have received over the past 40 years have been imported and sourced by greedy business-people from within our own countries, wanting the most return on investment............its called capitalism ;D.
China has had the industrial complex to produce and quality of goods for years, its all up to the buyer as to there marigins and most importantly how much quality they wish to put into there product.  Years ago Korean and Japanese stuff was considered junk........the table of kinda turned big time.  What has changed is the direct selling directly to the consumer from overseas.

I have bought over 300 items from china and i have been happy with most of them.
One really needs to use his brain and common sense to figure out what they should and should not buy from china.

I might get myself one for 3/8 lp because i don't have a raker gauge for that and i'm curious to see how that 2in1 works out.
