Help identifying “ seed pods “

I was at my BIL's today for our Mother's Day get together and he asked if I knew what these are from. I have no idea, I don't think I've seen anything like this before. He has been living in this house for several years and said he hasn't seen them before.We had a good bit of wind the other day and they are all over his yard so there was not a definite place to look. Any ideas ?

Looks like a gall, that harbors a bug.

Google oak gall or oak apple. A lot to read about. 

The small hole in one shown is an exit hole.
