I'm looking for some instructional material on Sawing hard wood for grade. Specificaly: how to get the highest quality out of a log. I gather from what I read on this forum, You could have a good straight log with now external defects, but there will be different grades within the log as you saw.
Is there a publication out thaere that can help with the basics? I know the best teachers are time, experience and mistakes, but I want to make sure I have the fundamentals down pat.

Before you start sawing grade lumber,   you need to know a little about how lumber is graded.   The hardwood lumber association puts on lumber grading classes around the country.  You may want to look into taking one of these.

I found a good reference guide published by the Forest Products Lab (I think).  I have it on my computer at the office.  I'll post a link to it in the morning.  It's a good read for explaining sawing methods to recover grade material from a log.

    Sawing for grade means you take the best and widest board possible from each face till the grade drops.  You must learn to read bark and grain.  Learning the grade of boards and most importantly in green sales the wane rules will help you get the most form each log.  Learning knot placement in logs and boards will help alot.  Most good grade sawyers are helped by how the logs are bucked and land on the saw.  Xray vision and instinct  comes after  the fist few thousand logs.  You learn more about sawing good lumber by sawing poor logs and taking the best it has to offer.  Learn to grade!
