Has anyone been able to attain the temperatures needed to set the pitch in white pine or spruce in a solar kiln?  I was thinking of using a small propane heater to achieve the 160 degree temperature, but I don't want to start the kiln or the lumber on fire.

we got our solar kiln to 150 the other day with just the sun.

is your's insulated?

insulation and a double roof on it makes a big difference.

Yes, mine is insulated with a double glazed roof.  I am able to obtain temps in the 140 to 150 degree range - just trying to get to the recommended 160 degree temp for 24 hours to set the pitch.

ok, do you have power in it?  i plan to put an oil filled radiator (with electric elements) in there to get the temp maxed on out.  I had to short out the thermostat to make that happen, though.

don't some of the propane heaters have grids so the flame is not exposed?  that would probably help.
