New car oil change

Changed the oil in our 'new' 2012 Honda civic yesterday. Had to hammer a 6 point to get the oil plug out but the threads where still there. The no name oil filter was falling off. But whoever did it last time was smarter than me because I can't reset the maintenance light. Book says has to go to dealer. That light could be on for a long time, Honda dealers around here will stick it..... I better stop right there.

Shouldn't require the dealer. Check youtube, which is what I do when our service information fails.

Get an OBD2 reader. That will let you reset the light, as well as read codes.  Bluetooth version is probably the best value and more capabilities.  Look up OBDLink MX+ or similar. 

Another option is go to Autozone or similar auto parts store. They will read codes and reset for free.

1. Turn the ignition to run (one position before starting engine).

2. Use the controls on the left hand side of the steering wheel. Press Menu and go to the Vehicle Menu screen.

3. Select Vehicle Information with the (+) button, then press the SOURCE button.

4. Press the SOURCE button again to go to the Maintenance info screen. The engine oil life appears on the i-MID.

5. Select Yes with the (-) button, then press the SOURCE button

6. Turn the ignition off and then start the engine to verify the indicator has been reset

A friend of mine had to change the oil pan on his Subaru because whoever put the drain plug in over-torqued it so much that there was no way to get it out. He had two different mechanics try to get the plug out.  The plug has a small head for the size of the threads.

My Wife has the same model, so the last time I changed the oil, I also changed the drain plug to a Fumoto valve.  

Not only does the plug have a small head, but it's up in a recess in the pan.  The Fumoto valve is well protected up in there.  I need a particular pair of pliers to pull the little lever down, and rotate it, but I already had those.

I like that valve.  You can slide a piece of hose over the outlet, and not get a drop of oil on anything when you drain it.

1. Turn the ignition to run (one position before starting engine).
