This is the first of a little series. I am pretty clutzy with carpentry.

So, I am building a kids cabin first, to figure out my wood working skills.

Here is one of the first pics:

Those are Full 2" x 8" floor joists, on 16" centers.

The kids did some nail pounding.

I know less than I used to.

Looks like you're doin' a good job on the kids- can't wait to see how the cabin comes out! 8)
I hope my ship comes in before the dock rots!

Patty

Very cool Nate. Those kids will never forget how fun this project was.  smiley_thumbsup

I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok, I work all night and sleep all day

Nate ;)

With all that help, you are sure to have a nice job done on that cabin!

It's obvious your not clutzy when it comes to family :D

I'd say you know a little bit about swinging your hammer.

The hard part is over... getting started that is. ;D  I can't wait to see how it turns out.
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

OK, progress:

I declare, when they ran out of places that NEEDED nails, they found some 4"x4" blocks, and began filling them with nails!

Then, we got some walls up. I had lots of 2x6's so, instead of making a ROOF, we made an UPSTAIRS floor. Now we have to build more walls. This will give them an ATTIC.

Again, I think I managed to pound roughly 3 nails per board...

I would never be doing this with bought lumber. Because I would be scared of messing up 'spensive lumber!

:D :D :D What a great way to have fun with your kids. They are going to be mighty proud of helping dad build their house. There are lots of books on basic framing and a wealth of knowledge on this forum. Don't be afraid to ask questions. It is a lot easier and safer to do it right the first time.
old age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm

Nate Surveyor

OK, here are the walls. (accidentally left out earlier)

They are 2"x4", with 4x4 in the corners, and some bigger material on the sides of the doors. We plan to make the doors. Maybe even the hinges from wood. Latches too.

If you have ever seen "Alone in the Wilderness" (a documentary) about a guy Dick Preoneke (sp!) a guy that goes to ALASKA, and builds a cabin, and lives there. He uses ALL hand tools, and the film has been watched here! I recommend it.

Looking pretty cool.  I built my grand kids a tree house(someone has to put the nails in in the trees) :o.  On of the most fun things I've done. 8)

Nate, you have been busy!

With what? The cabin or the FIVE kids thing!?  hehe.

That cabin sure looks a beaut! Can't wait to see more photos of it. Thanks for sharing it. You must be really proud of those kids.
