I had an interesting problem when trying to use a Stihl 211 MS   It started up   and  idled just fine but died when I pulled throtol trigger to rev it up.   Then I discovered I had forgotten to tighten the Cap to the bar oil securely and all the oil  had run out    I filled up the oil again and after that the saw ran just fine both at idol and at hi.   Do saws have some Shut down mechanism that keeps the chain from revolving if there is no bar oil ?

I don't think so, but the chain will jam up if it runs out of oil, and not spin. A little saw probably doesn't have the power to spin the dry chain, so it just stalls. As long as you didn't persevere and burn up the clutch there is probably no harm done.
