I shot this picture looking south from our yard just at sundown in July of 93 - the year of the Great Flood. This thunderhead dumped over 5" of rain in about 45 minutes on Linn, MO about 20 miles south of us.

Thought I'd add this pic, its my neighbors house.
You can't see in this pic but its log with 7 courses of squared logs and a 9 foot ceiling. A good solid house! ;D
They have cedar shingles and timber framed porch as well, very nice how it blends into the landscape.
Here is a picture I took on Untersberg near Salzburg Austria. Not really a sky picture, but you can see da sky. :-/

FiFi - the last flying B-29
Mark,
Is FI-FI part of the Confederate Airforce in Arkansas?
5 or 6 years I heard a strange noise and looked up, a B-29 was flying over. I told my son to take a good look and listen to that because he would probably never see or hear it again. That night on the news they reported a B-29 coming into the Springfield, Mo. airport-----part of the Confederate Airforce.
We have Stealth bombers and B52's fly over in training all the time, but that B-29 gave us a special thrill.
Noble
How's that big thing fly without it's props turnin'? ;D
Hi Noble,
Yes I am sure it is the same plane. I think they changed the name to the Commemorative Air Force though. There is a website at http://www.cafb29b24.org/ that tells about this plane and Dimond Lil - the B24. They were in town this summer for about a week and I went down and took pictures when they took off. For about $300 you could fly in the 24 and I gave it some serious consideration. My dad flew B-17's and if I ever get the chance to fly in one of those I will. Here's another shot of FiFi. When I get a little time I'll upload some more to my Pbase page.
Mark
(https://forestryforum.com/images/YaBBImages/userpics/29.jpg)
I told them to stop the props when they got overhead so my pictures wouldn't be blurry. :D
Most nearly everyone knows that the Enola Gay was
the name of the B-29 that carried the atomic bomb
on that fateful day over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. She was named by the pilot, Lt. Col. Paul W. Tibbets in honor of his mother, Enola Gay Haggard.
However, most don't know the name of the B-29 that
carried the atomic bomb over Nagasaki. That B-29 was named Bock's Car after it's usual commander,
Frederick Bock. But Bock's Car was piloted by
Major Charles W. Sweeney.
Contrary to some myths. Now retired General Paul W. Tibbets did not commit suicide and piloted FI-FI in 1990.
In fact today, Feb. 23, is Gen. Tibbets' birthday as he was born in Quincy, Illinois in 1915.
see:
http://www.tangischools.org/schools/phs/think/man/tibpic.htm
You can see Bockscar at the Wright-Paterson Airforce Museum in Dayton Ohio. It's a really neat place.
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/index.htm
If y'all want to read a good book that will describe what it was like being in a B17 and a B24, I suggest:
The Mighty Eighth by Gerald Astor. It's paperback.
It's about the 8th Airforce in Britain. It will give you a dang good idea what those boys went through in those planes.
Arkansawyer sent me this picture of Arkansas Sunshine.

That boy has got to be quite a hand with his camera. And he talks all the time about doin all this sawin. Truth be known, he probably has Rodney doin the sawin while he is out taking pictures.
:D :D :D
Keep 'em pictures cummin, those are some purty pictures. If it ever warms up around here maybe I'll get out to take some of my own to post ::) I THINK there's some logs lying out there under the snow....
Here is a view from when I went mountin climbing. My butt was draggin that day ;)
I've lived 99.9% of my life at 500-700 foot elevation. On one of our trips out west, we stopped at one of the parks near Flagstaff. It was only 100 yards up this moderately steep path to see a volcano crater. The air was crisp and I felt good – even invigorated. Got about 100 feet and I thought my lungs were going to come out of my chest! I had to stop a couple of times going up to "blow awhile".
I've spent my life at or under 50 feet above sea level. You should have seen me at Pike's Peak. :D
10 years ago while visiting my son in Cal. We went on a camping trip to Yemenite and to see the Redwoods. My son and I took one day to hike to the top of Half Dome (~ 18 mi.) .
The last 900 ft. is up smooth granite at about a 60 degree angle. 900 ft. doesn't sound like much but it took over 3 hr. Luckily they have drilled holes and planted pipe with cable for a hand rail and you can almost walk up it. :P
There are 2 cables with posts about 8 ft apart and every other one had a 2x4 crossways between the pipes.. With the thin air we had to stop at everyone and catch our breath before going on. The lack of oxygen makes you real weak.
Had a little excitement on the way down. It got dark! ::) ::)
Luckily we ran into a couple Rangers with a flashlight who were looking for someone else and we followed them down. The morel is that if the sign says it's a full day hike don't wait until 8:00 AM to start. 8) 8)
If you ever get a chance do it, it is cool to lay on the edge of the cliff and look straight
down almost 1 1/2 mi. you couldn't make out the cars on the road only the buses. 8) 8)
John
Tom your comment about Pike's Peak reminds me of trip we took out west when our kids were small. Way back in the last century. We set up our campers at the bottom of Pike's Peak and everyone who wanted to go up hopped in to my 1970 Plymouth Station wagon (with a big V8) and headed up the mountain. Everything went OK till about 11000 ft. when the car wouldn't go anymore. ::) ::) It would start but when you pushed on the gas black smoke came out the tail pipe but lt didn't make enough power to move. :P :P
Well my wife and sister in-law looked out the window and down down down not straight down but it went as far as you could see And started crying(https://forestryforum.com/smile/cry2.gif)
After about 10 min. the Park Rangers came along with there 454 cu. in. rig and offered us a tow to the next turn around. :-* They had a cable no more than 6 ft. long and the overhang behind the rear axle was longer than that. Every time we went around one of the hairpin turns, the overhang would swing out over where they normally put the guard rails, on normal roads and pull us right to the edge. :-X :-X Wife and sister in-law were very vocal about that at first :'( :'(. Then they got on the floor and covered their eyes.
When we got to the first turn out they unhooked us and told us we could go back down or advance the ignition about 30 degrees and go on up 8) 8). After some discussion I loosened the distributor and turned it about 1/6 turn and we went right up. ;D ;D
That was a fun trip, visited relatives in Mo. And Co. and had a great time except for falling in the Glory Hole but we won't talk about that :-X :-X.
Well I might have been egg-zadg-u-ratin a little when I said mountain climbing :-[
It was more like a nice stroll along this path. Course it did happen in a mountain, and we were going up :-/

Nice picture, Mark, but look at all those clearcuts in th background. :-/
I expect those "clearcuts" are managed forest areas that help keep the whole forest from burning down. ;D
Mark,
How do you mt. climb with no feet. ??? ;)
I have a good recipe for these things. You cook them in a pot with 4 smooth rocks.
Cook for about 3 hours on medium heat then remove the seagull and eat the rocks.
Works well for loons too!
;D

I was deleting some links out of my favorites list when I found this one to NASA. It is a java applet for listings of times for flyovers of satellites and such. I looked up the space station and found it was going to be low in it's orbit over our place. Patty got home from night classes just in time to view it with me. Pretty impressive.

We have the " Yankee Air Force" here in Michigan. My father and daughter JUSt went up in their B-17..1 of 4 still flying today. The : Yankee Lady"...My daughter was THRILLED and my father is still smiling to this day. Been around aircraft all my life and I cant honestly say theres nothing like tyhe feeling of flying..GREAT pictures on here guys...really nice

Have any of ya'll heard of a Hunters moon? Is it defined the same way across the country?
Neat Link. Calculate your moonrise/sunrise times
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html
Jeff,
In my neck of the woods (Southern MD) we have always know it as a harvest moon. One of the first ones that I can remember seeing, I was out one night plowing, looked up across the road towards the woods and thought they were on fire :o
Mike
What is the definition of a harvest moon? What makes a harvest moon a harvest moon?
Does it have something to do with a UP'r pulling his pants down at da deer camp?
Nope. I'm askin. I know, or at least think constitutes a hunters moon, and I would imagine Harvest moon is the same.
The full moon nearest the time of the September equinox.
Is the equinox related to the fact that the sunsets and the moon rises at almost the same time? Thats what I was always taught was a hunters moon. I didn't think they were necessarily related.

January 2, 2004..
Mary and I had pulled lumber from stock to fill a couple of orders most of the day. It got up to over 70 degrees – likely the best day we're going to have in January.
Got into the house about sundown and set down for just a minute when there was a knock at the door. Mary went to see who it was. She didn't return and didn't call for help so I waited about 10 minutes before investigating. It was our taxidermist customer. He needed a wide heavy piece of wood to mount a Cape buffalo head that will go into a display at the Missouri state capitol building. (Sounds odd I know but we just get caught up in such things. I'll try to get pictures.)
We found him a chunk of red oak about 20" wide and 2" thick to make his mount. It was about the last of some red oak we'd sawn 9 years ago when we first started. He placed an order for some walnut and also said he'd be adding onto his house this spring and wanted to panel it in ERC as he done another room he'd built.
As we walked back to the house, we decided it would be great to just get a pizza for supper. Mary even volunteered to "fly".

My dad always told me there was a specific term for that--it escapes me. I think I'll have to call him up and ask him!
Whenever there is a halo around the moon like that it is forewarning of rain or snow. The halo is the reflection of moonlight off moisture droplets in the atmosphere. Sure looks pretty.

Well, I bet he did get on his way home :o :o
Swamp,
Cypress are typically sparse like that up top. that's what I think makes them so distinctive and pretty. There are a few limbs way up there and they have little tufts of leaves/needles that make them look kinda oriental because they are flat. Those that have spanish moss hanging from them are even more so spectacular.
This is a very healthy tree and is one of about four remaining in a damp spot that will become pasture. Remember I've talked of clearing out wetland species because the Gov. will stop you from using your land if they are found? Well....... This is to be a pasture.
I was curious because I've seen yellow cedar/cypress with almost nothing left for crown and still supporting a farely large tree. Those things are indistructable except burning. Where I worked in Northern BC I never saw any regenerating because of the sitka deer problem and they grow up in the mountains, not down next to sea level like red cedar. You wouldn't think the deer would be in the higher elevations, they must think they're goats. :'(
A picture I took a while back. Any guesses where it was taken. Kind of looks like it might rain.

Stew
Funny story... :) Well, I may be the only one who thinks it is funny, but....
We went to visit Devil's Tower and were camped out in a field, sleeping under the stars. I looked up and there it was--a UFO. Seriously! Slowly moving across the sky. NW to SE.
This was quite a few years ago--just after the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out.
-Doug
Stew, that looks like a scene right out of a movie. 8)
SD, there was a little trading post just outside the entrance that we stopped at. It had been raining and I noticed the view before we got out. I just had to take the picture. ;D
Stew
I think it would make a good Planet of the Apes movie. ;D
Where's Devil's Tower? Cool pic!
Devil's Tower is located in the North Eastern corner of Wyoming.
FYI - Proclaimed September 24, 1906 as the nation's first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Stew
Stew, you forget to tell how the tower was formed. It was formed when some Native American children were chased by a bear and prayed to the big Native American Chief in the sky to save them. The big chief in the sky caused the earth the children were on to rise upwards to save them from the bear. The bear tried to climb the tower causing claw marks on the tower that are still visable to this day. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
That is correct Pigman, either you paid attention in school, or you and I have traveled some of the same paths. ;D ;D
Here are a few more pictures to confirm.
A sign outside of Devil's tower.
It reads:
Devil's Tower, an important landmark for the Plains Indian tribes long before the white man reached Wyoming, was called Mateo Tepee, or Grizzly Bear Lodge, by the Sioux. A number of Indian legends describe the origin of Devil's Tower. One legend tells about seven little girls being chased onto a low rock to escape attacking bears. Their prayers for help were heeded. The rock carried them upward to safety as the claws of the leaping bears left furrowed columns in the sides of the ascending tower. Ultimately, the rock grew so high that the girls reached the sky where they were transformed into the constellation known as Pleiades.
Fur trappers may have visited Devil's Tower, but they left no written evidence of having done so. The first documented visitors were several members of Captain W.F. Reynolds Yellowstone Expedition who arrived in 1859. Sixteen years later, Colonel Richard I. Dodge led a U.S. Geological Survey party to the massive rock formation and coined the name Devil's Tower. Recognizing its unique characteristics, Congress designated the area a U.S. forest reserve in 1892 and in 1906 Devil's Tower became the nation's first national monument.
Rising dramatically to a height of 1280 feet above the Belle Fourche River, Devil's Tower has become a rock climbing mecca. On July 4, 1893, local rancher William Rogers became the first person to complete the climb after construcing a ladder of wooden pegs driven into cracks in the rock face. Technical rock climbing techniques were first used to ascend the Tower in 1937 when Fritz Wiessner conquered the summit with a small party from the American Alpine Club. Today hundreds of climbers scale the sheer rock walls each summer. All climbers must register with a park ranger before and after attempting a climb.
~End of Sign~
(NOTE: During the month of June, climbing is prohibited to observe religious beliefs of native Americans.)

Stew, didn't pay much attention in school to the things I should have. I was near the tower in June 04, but was too poor to pay my way into the park. I didn't see the sign, but someone told me about the Native American legend.
I hear ya. At least you got a chance to see it. There are many people who have never seen it or even heard of it. I am very thankful that I was able to take my kids on vacation this past summer. They got to visit and see some places they will remember for the rest of their lives, as will I. ;)

GREAT STUFF!!! 8)
I'm glad you started it too. Really awesome pictures. I'll give you two responses.
I didn't really want a camera in my cell phone, but I was going to have to wait to get the cell phone I wanted. Now I'm thrilled I got it because I don't always have my camera with me. While the quality of camera phone pictures is DanG sad (if it was another forum, I would have used some other adjectives), some times the texture actually enhances the picture.
Here are three camera phone sky pictures:

I have answered the survey on another thread about using a cell phone while driving. I think the surveyor had meant
talking on the cell phone. I'm pretty sure using a cell phone to take pictures while driving is potentially worse than talking (and illegal over bridges near NYC).

I have better pictures of this particular sunset, but I liked the sky and my hubby's arm at the helm - Lake Champlain, July 2003.

Our favorite summer pasttime - Hathaway's Drive-In, Hoosick Falls, NY. When the sunsets are awesome, the weather is perfect for a pizza and a six pack and two new movies!
tomboy, nice pictures. To comment on the drive in theatres, they have been extinct up here for at least 25 years, closer to 30. Used to go to Woodstock (NB), 'The Fort' and Caribou Maine when I was a youngster tagging along. The video cassette recorder killed them here. We never even had a local theatre for at least 25 years, they just build a new one in Woodstock a couple years ago. The nearest ones to me in Maine were closed up last year.

Mosta our drive-ins are gone too. There used to be plenty in town and the surrounding areas. This one's been around for just over 50 years. It's about 15 minles away. It's for sale, but I don't think they're going to close. Ran in to a friend this weekend as we went to a packed Drive-In for
Cars and
Pirates of the Caribbean, she pointed out they don't go to the movies often. For just three of them $21 would but a movie when it came out on DVD. But with just two of us, $14 for the movie, $7 for a good six pack, and $20 for pizza (with lunch leftovers) is cheaper than a dinner out and way more fun because we got first run movies.
I figure the drive-in is the Red Neck Dinner Theater.
I read somewhere that they are expecting drive-ins to come back. While the number of theaters hasn't increased over the last few years, the number of screens and ticket sales have increased.

The other one is a sky shot too, but with a bit of a twist, it's taken from in the sky. I was up near my summer place trying to get some fall colour shots and caught this neat effect of the sun shining through the clouds, showing the rain in silhouette, with the sunset just peeking through in the background.
I got a few nice shots of some fall colours too, but they're not very good this year because it was a little too dry here for most of the summer. I'll see if I can come up with a couple and find a place to post them.
Murf,
You are in a great position to get fantastic photos. I love to see airials. You don't have to deal with power lines and trees and people walking in front of the camera. Sky shots are neat. So are the pictures of farms, all manicured and clean, new buildings in an urban setting, ships at sea or on the lakes, other planes. Yep, that's some fun shooting. Even the edges of cloud banks are something we groundlings seldom get to see. :)

Seeing the moon set as the sun rises is incredible. I saw that on a bitterly cold Christmas morning some years ago and didn't have the DanG camera. :'(

Harvest moon a little later in the evening.
Sprucebunny, I've never seen a Sundog that arcs over the sun like that. That's neat. I lived in Minnesota from 1972 through 2004 and now live in western Wisconsin. I've seen a lot of Sundogs because they appear on a crystal clear super cold day when the temps are 10 or more degrees below zero. I've always seen them as two shafts of lights, one on each side of the sun. From what I've been told, it's the sun shining off ice crystals in the air. :)
I never saw one here. :D
I was ending up a day working on my grass. We had a drought this year and where the sun burned my lawn grass, lots of crapgrass took over. So I thatched where the crabgrass grew and put down lawn grass seed. I had just put up the equipment when I saw this neat sky scene. It isn't a sunset but more of a dusk picture. The sky had been overcast all day with some light showers. About 5:45 p.m. the sun is peeking from behind dark gray clouds and illuminating a cloudy but clearer sky on the horizon. Solid clouds above me. What was neat was the sky in the horizon would slowly get brighter and almost glow, then dim, then get brighter again, then dim. It kept doing that and I took the picture as it glowed brightly.
Tom, it's imperitive that you experience seeing a Sundog. I'll expect you up here either the end of January or the first week of February. I'll show you a Sundog. I'll let you borrow a coat...........and gloves..........and a stocking hat you can pull down over your ears. ;D
Sprucebunny and Norm, It always amazes me when I see a Harvest Moon. It's kind of Spooky to me. I used to see them on my way home from work. The moon would be rising on ther horizon. It would be a firey orange and HUGE! About 10 times the size of a normal moon. I have no idea what causes it to appear so big when it is rising, but it is always a neat experience. Of course.....I never had a camera with me when I saw one. I really enjoyed your pictures.
Charlie,
I have very vivid memories of arriving at the Great Lakes Training Center on the 3rd of February. I'm not sure that a jacket, gloves and stocking hat would be of much help to me. Uncle Sam gave me some and might as well have been naked. As I recall, the glass in the airport terminal in Chicago didn't even provide much help. I was cold looking at the snow and ice, then they made us get out in it and run for the bus. Florida boys have a need, but not the experience to run on ice... on concrete.
The "big" moon, or sun, at the horizon is caused by the atmosphere forming a lense that acts like a magnfying glass. Once the moon gets high enough that the light rays hit the atmospere more directly and there is less atmosphere, the size shrinks.
I remember Brother Dave saying that "if he were shot to the moon, it would be his luck that it would be a new moon and he'd miss it." ;D
Charlie,
Is it possible that there are two kinds of 'sundog' or that my name for a ring of light around the sun is wrong ??? I agree that it's usually seen in winter and as a warning of snow in the near future but that certainly wasn't true the other day. We've been having beautiful, clear weather. I took the picture 'cause it was unusual to see this time of year.
I've really enjoyed seeing several pictures of the moon here and being able to see the geographic features of the moon in each of them. You can see how it's rotated a little in each one :) :)
My knowledge of sundogs is that it looks like a second sun.
Or otherwise a bright spot off to one side or the other, in some rare cases you can see two at once, usually one on each side of the sun.
Here is what google says:
Link (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3A+sundog)
I don't remember the names for the halo or arch around the sun/moon but they are indeed from ice crystals.
The streaks or rays can be caused by moisture as well as ice. I see them a lot on foggy mornings.
This site is pretty cool and says that sundogs are as you describe Joan.

I love those harvest moons too! My dad has a degree in astronomy, and he would always tell us that the size of the moon during those times is really nothing more than an optical illusion, due to it's close proximity to the horizon. He would always have us close one eye, and then extend our hand all the way, stick our thumb into the air, then place the thumb next to the moon and look at the two with one eye closed. I've always found it amazing how doing that suddenly makes the moon look normal again.
Kinda cool!
You also get the same refraction from the sun sometimes when it's going down near the horizon and it looks like a red ball.
Double Sunset Video (http://www.eh2r.com/mp/double.html)
I see it alot of times in winter here and I have a clear view from the height of land I'm on for several miles. Well, I can see Mount Katahdin on a clear dry day and that's at least 40 miles away. Out in Glassville is another 15 miles away as the crow flies and I can see it from those hills to. ;)
Paschale's explanation of the big moon got my attention because I was told about the "atmospheric lens" since childhood. It was even taught to us in school.
Now I find that the whole of the science community says otherwise and even makes a point of defining my explanation in error.
It is, in fact, a result of oculomotor micropsia, an optical illusion.
It amazes me that I can study a big moon like that and have to move my eyes from side to side to see it all. My experience with oculomotor micropsia also enhances the definition and detail of the moon. Why on earth would we need telescopes if we could trick our minds into seeing things in so much larger size and detail. Just imagine hunting a corn field's stubble and seeing the rabbits 1/2 mile away on the other side of the field. Or, being able to see the deer in the far trees nibbling on a bush while a deerfly can be seen annoying him by biting his rump. Or, the examination of the movement of enemy forces, at a distance, with or without magnification equipment.
Live and learn. As much as I hate to admit being wrong (gasp), I fall in a very small group who thought/thinks that the size of the Moon is due to Magnification by the atmosphere. Perhaps I'll abandon that definition and replace it with the oculomotor micropsia one, at the moment. I'm still looking for something that I can understand though. :D
I guess there is some consolation knowing that this has been puzzling scientist for over 2000 years. :P :-\
Well . Tom, fortunately for me, I didn't learn anything in school, so my head isn't full of wrong information 8) 8) I do know better than to look at the sun, cause it will hurt your eyes ::) ::) I do enjoy the shade, however ;D
What amazes me is how the sun can spin around the earth without a big string attached to it. smiley_headscratch

This is a shot I took a while back. Auckland airport was fogged in, and this plane decided to hold untill the fog lifted rather than diverting. On the first page of this thread there were some pics of a B-29,(or B-17? I don't know a lot about planes) & I thought I'd share a pic that I took this year at a air show in Jasper, Tx of one from the air musueum in Galveston, Tx. that flew that day. Someone stated that that one "Fifi" was the last flying B-29 (B-17)... Nope! Here's this one too!

Been seeing one of these flying around the Bristol area the last couple years. I think it's used by search and rescue and we are a long way off from any military air base. We just have small private airports/runways near by.

This is one of the sights I was blessed with almost each nite after exiting my bear blind in the cranberry floodings near Detour Village. I have several photos of the same place but all are different. This one I am going to have printed in a large format someday and framed. I also been looking for some frames for a couple pictures. One was a photo of fall foliage (trees in the back yard) and one is from a digital photo sent to me by sprucebunny of Crawford Notch in New Hampshire.
That is a nice picture Jeff.
379Hammerdown, the WWII bomber in your picture is a B17, also known as a Flying Fortress. The B24 is a shorter bomber with twin tails and the cockpit is different. Both were used a lot in the European Theater but the B17 was the workhorse primarily because of the high altitude bombing. However, the B24 was the workhorse in the Pacific Theater where it was used a lot for not only low altitude bombing but also for strafing with machine guns. The B29 bomber was the biggest and was used in the Pacific Theater when the U.S. got close enough to bomb the Japanese mainland. The Enola Gay was a B29 and dropped the first atom bomb on Japan.
Note: Pigman noticed my errors, Tom figured out what I meant and I made the corrections. ;D
Now Charlie you are a smart guy, ( and I see you have corrected your post) but you have a few facts wrong in your post. The B52 did not go into service until the 1950's.
Bob
Edit: I just realized, Charlie was giving a test to see if anybody was paying any attention to his posts. ;)
Charlie, did I pass your test. ;) ;D
I think Charlie mistyped. He was probably talking about the B17 and the B24 as the workhorse bombers and the B29 as the Enola Gay. He's pretty sharp on that stuff. :)
Roses are red
violets are blue
you have a nose
like a B52 :D :D
The folks at Loring AFB at Limestone, Maine used to fly B52's over here. I think a couple didn't make it back. :-\
SD,
I'm not positive but I would imagine that this B52 was station out of Loring, as this crash site is about 150 miles as the crow flies from there ...

Tom knows me well. He can decipher what I meant even though that's not what I said. ;D I'm going back to correct my post. I meant B17, B24 and B29 ::) It was late when I typed that post. :)
Sounds like Bingo to me.... :D :D :D

Last Sunday, a pic of the early snow that fell.
I stepped out this morning as the sky was starting to brighten up. I noted a single beam of bright light shining in the woods on the ridge about a half mile away to the east and south of our house. At first I thought it odd. Then the number of beams of light increased and I got an idea of what was going on. The sun was rising on the ridgeline and the light was breaking up among the trees. I went in and told Mary to come out and look. By then it looked like a house decorated for Christmas with all bright white lights.

I got my camera and took this picture but it does not do the sight justice.
This is the first picture I took with my new camera. This question for Furby, is it looking east or looking west?
Bob
Ok Bob,
Of those two choices...............
That is looking WEST! ;)
Furby, was you wanting a different choice?
Knowing Bob, it's a trick question. ::) ::)
I atleast put a VERY well known building in my pic as a clue. ::)
Furby, the file name is a very good clue. If you need any help figuring it out I am sure someone will help if you only ask. ;D
Bob
Hey, I had a 50/50 shot. ;D
Guess I gotta start checking your file names as well eh? :D
Furby, you haven't answered my question. The file name only told you it was a sunrise. You might still need help. Is the picture facing east or west? ;D I got my wife to help me figure it out. ;)
Bob
::) ::) ::)
Now Bob, I DID answer you, I said WEST!
Your file name is sunrise.
If it was indeed a sunrise then the answer is EAST.
However..... if ya used a mirror to take a pic of the sunrise, it would STILL be EAST as the CAMERA is facing WEST, but the pic is STILL an EAST facing pic.
Now if the pic is a pic of a pic, then how the heck am I suposed to know what way ya had it facing when ya took a pic of a pic ??? :D
Now ya gonna tell me what's up or what ???
What is up.
Who is down.
Where is east.
When is west.
Who am I?
No,,,,,,,,,Whos on first,,,,,,,I think :D :)
This was the view of the sky tonight 8)
Comet McNaught was very visable just after sunset, and was almost as bright as Venus. Tail was about the size of your thumb when you hold out your arm.
This isn't my pic but was shot tonight with a standard digital camera.

Cheers
Ian
That's way cool Ian. Was it moving fairly fast across the sky? You know, a lot of people never look up. Often when I'm out side at night, walking to the shop or pushing snow, I like to look up at a clear sky. I usually see a shooting star and they move some fast, considering they are so far out in space that I can't even fathom it. Anything beyond 25,000 miles seems infinite to me. ;D
Shooting stars are at the edge of the atmosphere Donk.
The "shooting" part happens when the "star" burns on contact with the earth's atmosphere.
The thing isn't moving that you can notice. I think it's still near the sun which is why it's so bright. So thats ~90 million miles away. Although you cant see it move, it's in a slightly different place in the sky each night.
You are thinking meteor or shooting star. Thats a fast moving object that hits the atmosphere and burns, fast moving and gone in seconds.
Cheers
Ian
Guess I ain't to good at astronomy, yet. ;D :D :D They're (shooting stars) still beyond where I'll be traveling. ;D Maybe I should stick to bushes. :D
Enjoy it while you can...seems like the next time it swings by home, it'll be a million or so years. :o
Here's a better pic of the comet taken from a couple of hours South of here.

Ian
Too funny. ;D :D
On the way to the shop I could see the moon and evening star just after sunset. There are some other stars starting the show as well. We have a long twilight up here, the sun set an hour before this shot.
Mars ???
Try this: Your Sky Link (http://www.fourmilab.ch/yoursky/)
I think it's Venus Furby. ::) ;)
Wasn't sure but I thought Mars was in the summer anyways.
Was just out for a while and saw the same thing as in your pic.
Was going to take a look at that site again and see what it said, but if you say it's Venus, then I'll take your word for it.
It is Venus Furby, it's the next brightest celestial object other than the sun and moon. We can't always see Mars as it's further from the Sun than Venus or Earth. Venus is closer to the sun and it's elliptical orbit is sooner than earth's this makes Venus appear not far from the Sun. The only time we wouldn't see Venus is when it's on the back side of the sun. We loose sight of Mars when it's behind us with our alignment with the Sun and when it's behind the Sun. Also, since it's further from the Sun, it would be harder to pick out from the stars when it's furthest from earth. We can't relate the sighting of Mars or Venus with the seasons because of their elliptical paths, thus their position in the sky today won't be the same as next Jan 20th. Remember the lining of the Planets in 1980 (?), that don't happen every year. ;)
True.
I was just thinking of when I've noted Mars in the past.
Tonight in the clear skies you can see the moon with a glimpse of Saturn nearby in the lower right corner.
Not very dramatic, but maybe you folks with more zoom can capture it. To my naked eye Saturn seems kind of orange. But, that might be just me.
You would have had to see the whole skyline to really appreciate these shark fins but here's a taste. They just went floating over.

That's a nice shot Kev.
Tomorrow night is the Lunar Eclipse for us east coasters. But, it may be overcast here.
The Lunar eclipse begins here at 5:30 pm, which is in 5 minutes. We have partial clear sky at the moment, but the moon is not in my view yet.
I guess the moon doesn't rise here until 7:17 pm AST. Now Thursday night it was up before sunset, could see it rise above my uncle's house.
The moon is totally eclipsed right now. I tried for pics leading up to it, but too dark. It will be back to normal around 9:10 pm here I think.
Thinkin of Jeff headin South, and tonight lookin to the West, hadda take this pic of the sunset sky scene. Wind still blowin the snow into drifts, but tomorrow is lookin good. :)
We can't see it here. Still broad daylight. I looked at where the sun is on the horizon, and envisioned where the moon must be right now for you to be getting a total eclipse and I figured the moon must be just below our horizon. Brilliant eh. ::)
We are spinning at around 1000MPH though so it shant be long and I'll see the moon, but not the eclipse.
I saw a freaky solar eclipse in Mobile back in the early - mid eighties. Everything whole place went to a really wierd ominous color before it got dark. Seemed like the world might end.
beenthere I know y'all are used to it/like it and all, but I get depressed just looking at all that snowand ice! It is 40 here and cold blowing wind. I about to go home and thaw out. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
I like winter Kev, but it did get above 40 F here today. We had a storm, but it was a fast mover with about 3 inches here. This afternoon you wouldn't even know one came through, everything melted clean off the driveway and road by mid afternoon. The sun was shining most of the day and a south wind. I still can't see the moon just yet. Still eclipsed and some cloud cover too. So when it comes full glow again it should show through the clouds. Wish Furb or someone with a good camera could get a shot before it's done. It was glowing red as Mars, but not very bright.
Just got a last glimpse of the moon before it went under clouds. It had a little bite out of it in the upper right corner. Tried for a pic, but the clouds are too thick now.
We be under clouds here, lake effect snow warning in fact!
We got to see it afterall last night. I have not figured out how to stay within the forum limits and post good close ups yet, but here's the best I can do. It was actually pretty spectacular but looks lame in these pictures.
Both pictures were taken within seconds of easch other, it's just that the lighter day-looking one was taken in nightime mode.

We are waxing gibbons again this evening but it's a super bright moon and has everything lit. It is behind some clouds right now but shines through and lights a huge amount of sky. My venetian blinds are turned down and I can watch it through the little slits. It is sure pretty.
Yeah the 'blue moon' is tomorrow night (second full moon this month). The only month this year with two nights of full moon. 8)
Cool pic Jeff B, almost looks like the clouds are lifting off the lake. ;)

We get to see the moon rise too. That is real pretty to see when the moon is red.We get to see it come up on the horizon.Looks like it comes up real fast when we can't see the whole moon, just the top of it.Than we can see the whole thing it takes a long time to come up the rest of the way.
I seen a combination of Jeff's and thecfarm's up on the St. Lawrence when passing through Rimouski, Qc in 1996. It just happened to be the 300th anniversary since it's founding. All hotels were booked up, so we went a little further east and stayed in an old railroad hotel.

While I was in the UP last week, I took a trip in the fog out to an Island about a half mile or so out in Lake Huron.
This first pic was taken from the Island.
This one was back on shore looking West.
Nice scenery Furby. Aside from fog being cold, it makes for some interesting pictures. In the Autumn we get a lot of fog along the rivers, not so much on the hills unless it's raining before daylight.
This scene was from Saturday night looking west.
Looking west eh? Did kevjay leave his Texan sized flashlight on again? :D
Dave
Awww cmon now I ain't that bad Dave. ::)
That picture was taken when I had the fridge door open. :D
Furby your second shot on Lake Huron is beautiful. Is there any chance I could get a full sized file of it e-mailed to me. :)
Good Luck Norm. :D I asked the same thing and aint got it yet. That photo is pretty much in our "backyard" from our property. Its a small Island just off of 134, probably 1/4 mile or less within sight of the sand beach where we go swimming. Furby will have to tell you about being lost in da fog while kayaking out to it. Rather, back from it. :)
Now Jeff, ya asked for a CD, if ya want them emailed.... why didn't ya say so? ;)
Well the story goes something like this.......
I headed out from Jeff's place towards DeTour Village. As soon as I pulled out I realized I was taking the long way around, but oh well.
It was nice and sunny and the water calm in DeTour and as I swung back West I drove into a heavy fog bank.
I could see folks out on the lake in some big row boats riding some real bigs waves.
Was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to take the kayak out. :-\
Stopped off at the state campground Jeff had told me about and took a look around.
Hit the road looking for this Island I had seen a day or two before and drove right out of the fog and once a gain the lake was pretty calm.
Found the DOT rest area that the Island is off of and walked out to the beach to check the conditions.
This is the Island when I first drove up.
There is a smaller Island that you can wade/swim to from shore on the left hand side of the pic.
This pic is of the big Island just before I got into the kayak to head out there.
The fog was moving in, but not real bad and I really wanted to see what was out there so I went. ::)
There is open water between the two Islands and that is the direction the waves were coming from, but they weren't real big and I could see the bottom pretty much the whole way out there.
That's not saying much in the clear waters of Lake Huron though as you can see a loooong way down.
I made it out to the Island with no problems and then went for a swim in the extremly refreshing waters of Lake Huron.
Looking back towards shore I realized the fog was too thick and that I couldn't see shore any longer. :o
I placed a call to the StumpJumpers with hopes they'd let Jonny join me out there (knowing full well they wouldn't ::) ) and also informed them that I couldn't see shore, but knew the way back. ;D
Next I set out to explore a little and towards the South side I came across some really weathered planks laid out as a walkway. I had to follow it! ;D First I came across a small fire ring and a cast iron tub near by, then I saw the cabin set right in the trees.
New It was time to take off as I didn't want to be tresspassing, but I didn't have a clue anyone lived there.
I did go around to the other side of the Island and saw a dock and an old row boat up on the bluff, but with the fog moving in heavier, it was time to go.
Hard to see, but here's the pic.
Heading back I made it about half way across and still couldn't see shore and also lost sight of the Island behind me, but could see the small Island off to my right.
I couldn't resist! ;D
I did a 90 and headed over to the small Island for a little exploring as well.
By the time I was ready to head back, it was pretty easy to see shore from the small Island and I headed in.
This is what I saw looking back toward the smaller Island, the bigger one still couldn't be seen.
I was told after my return that Jeff's buddy Lou had stopped by the StumpJumpers to pick up the kids so they could feed the chuckers.
After not seeing my vehicle, Lou asked about me.
The StumpJumpers explained where I was and that I had just called and said I couldn't see shore.
Lou just shook his head and said they lose a few fellows that way every year. :D :D :D
I did make it back to camp just in time for some dutch oven baked Peach Cobbler and ice cream. ;D

smiley_big-grin2
He needed a good helping to supplement his frantic paddling to find shore. He musta been ghostly by then. ;D
Wow dutch oven cobbler, umm ummm. :)
Furby there's no way I'd gone out in the fog, glad you made it back ok. Every time I see photos of that area the more it makes me want to visit. I keep thinking I'm going to get a vacation some day and my sons keep finding more work for me. Darn this capitalism. :D

that was pure luck on getting that picture. because my wife had taken two shots before that and they didn't turn out. so she handed me the camera moments later and i turned the screen off so nobody new that the camera was on, I had it sitting on my knee and aimed it in the general direction and pressed the button. what luck.

Naw, YOU'RE FIRED!
Happy now ???
I don't know if this is true. Received it in an e-mail.
If anyone is up past midnight tonight.
Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.
It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth.
Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Mooseherder
Not very true. It's been coming around for several years now....google it and you will see the significance that it is not.
That was back in 2003, and only when looking through a 75x telescope. It has become an urban legend since. :D Mars gets close every 15-17 years actually, but hasn't been that close in a long time.
Look up perihelic opposition in google with reference to NASA. ;)

Unfortunately I'll be up for it. :D
Gotta be at work at 5am. ;)
Unfortunately I won't be up for it.... no work. ::)
We were just coming up the valley this evening as that came over the mountains and looked twice as big as normal.
Suppose to happen about 2:30AM our time. Think I'll miss it.
The moon is suppose to set here before the eclipse so we don't see it. The moon is nice and bright for the time it is up. Thought it was getting daylight. Oh well, I'm up now. ;)
Supposed to start at 8:30pm here, and the clouds seem to have broken up enough to see something. 8:00 pm now.. waiting

Really cool show :)
Ianab, You had the same view that we had. Awesome show! It started about 4:30 and was in total eclipse at 5:00AM then by 6:00 it was all gone and the sun was starting to come up. Cool way to start my day!
Took this up at the lake the other day.

I'm always waiting to see a big hand reach out of one of those holes in the clouds :D.
This was from a couple of weeks ago one evening on the front porch. It was more intense a few minutes earlier but took a minute to find the camera.
One thing Mary and I can take credit for is instilling in Alex and Brooke some appreciation for the beauty of nature. I figured they'd get bored of me dragging them out to see a sunset or rainbow or sunlight making the ice on a tree look like crystal. But they've picked up the idea.
This evening they came running in and wanted Grandma to come out and see the sunset. Then they found I was near so they insisted that I come too and I had to bring my camera.
Well, the best of the brilliant sky was about gone by the time I got out there with my camera but I snapped a couple of pictures and let each girl take a picture. Then they wanted their picture taken with the sky scene. I did but this time the flash went off. I figured it'd just wash out their images and took another with the flash turned off.
Turned out, the one with the flash came out ok. I did a little work with the photo editor to get bring their images.

Bibbyman it looks like we had the same idea about the same time. You were seeing the same thing as me just a few lines of longitude sooner. I caught that real pretty color you said you were late getting but my pixels shrank at some point. It was so striking I thought I would share it. Course mine didn't have the cute grands in it. :)

Last week as the sun was going down and shinning through the trees my 2 year old came and got me and kept saying "come see, come see." I thought "wow he has a real apprectiation for nature's beauty," that was until he starts yelling "call the firefighter trucks Mommy." :D :D :D He thought the woods were on fire.
Next Wednesday is the full moon, Feb 20th. It is also time for another lunar eclipse for us up here in the NE. Lasting 3-4 hours and in full eclipse for around an hour. I think it's around 10:00 pm for us Maritimers.
Just a heads up.

I always wondered what that leftover rope was doing in the tree Paul. :D
This old red elm just keeps shedding branches but leafs back out each spring. For some reason those don't seem to get the elm disease all the other varieties do here.
I've never seen clouds like this here, in May. Looks like snow clouds to me. It's hailing on my shop in little chips right now. No rain. Just tiny bits of hail. Never mind. Turned into rain the instant I typed that. ::)

Same weather here all week. Todays shows just started as I finished piling up 1.5 cord of furnace wood.
Monday at 4:00 pm I just finished up thinning for the day and it all let loose hard rain and lightening as I drove off the lot, yesterday 3 or 4 showers. Managed to thin 3 acres with the brush saw though in 2.5 days.

I'z just setting in my chair in the livingroom with I looked out the window to see the Goodyear blimp go past. By the time I got my camera, it had got a little far away. What next?
Update... I was in error when I said it was the Goodyear blimp. Mary had the binoculars and when she first looked at it said it was the Goodyear blimp. A while ago she corrected me. She now says it was some ad like "The power of if".
Here's some from a state park in Tioga County,Penna. Caught a 17-1/2" bass that night, too ;)

I've enjoyed looking at the Sky Scene photos on this thread.
Here, I'll post a contribution. I took this photo on the Bay of Thailand just south of Bangkok.

The detail in that first photo is incredible! Beautiful!
You should see the 15 MP version. The hairs on the back of the dragon fly are visible. I like macro photography. Thanks Roxie!
Can you put pics on the wall in your cube? Take some in there with you. Not as good as being outside but better than looking at the walls.
Lee, unfortunately, no. I can't bring anything in, no cell phone, radio, CDs, nada. This one computer is my only link to the outside. Once I get here, I stay until quitting time. A better word to describe it is a vault instead of a cube.
Here are a few scenes I shot on the way to the pig roast and on the way home.

I just came in from watching a beautiful star filled U.P. sky. The space shuttle followed by the International Space Station passed directly over head. It was awe inspiring
The local weatherman usually gives us the heads up on clear nights when to view (time) the space station. I've never done it because most times I'm asleep long before then. :D
On my way to saw, I see the channel 9 and 10 news tower emerging from the fog. I wish I would have got the photo as soon as I saw it, it was quite a site.

OK, call me crazy, but this towering cloud looked exactly like a black bear looking away up until I got stopped and got the camera out. one of his ears fell apart before I could get the picture. Can you see him?

Took this one a few weeks ago it is the moon rising (east)as the sun was setting (west), I was standing about 50' from the taller tree at dusk tonight and a owl landed in it and watched me for 4or 5 min then flew over quite low and across the field to another tree.

Same here with the frost my grass is still mostly green.

Hard to get the total effect of them but they were gorgeous.
We have been having some hot and wet weather and just about every day this past week there were storms that dumped heavy rains, high winds, tornados, hail and flooding. On one day rainfall totals ran from 3 to 6 inches in various places. And then late Friday afternoon while I was getting ready to leave the job I was working on (in the mud) I was just north of a cell that passed just south of me and showed some spectacular views of the sky. There were tornado reports, high winds and hail in this storm.
This view looking to the north was taken around 6 PM while I was standing in the sun with a few sprinkles falling. There was another line of storms about 50 miles to the north in this picture passing thru the Twin Cities and moving into Wisconsin.
Then looking to the east.
Then to the southeast.
And then at about 7:45 PM as the storm cell finally was moving away.
So for about an hour and 45 minutes I was treated to just a few sprinkles while there were reports of a tornado on the ground near the Rochester airport (about 15 miles southwest of me) plus high winds, heavy rains and flooding right where I needed to go. There were even two rainbows thrown in for good measure while I worked in the sunshine and watched it all unfold. It was a spectacular show, but I've now seen enough of these DanG'ed storms for a while.
That last photo is amazing!
We sure appreciate you keeping some of that rain Gary but could you try a little harder. :D
Sorry Norm, we've run out of places to put the water and are now temporarily holding it in the streets. And I see where Ames is doing the same thing.
Do you suppose we should be gathering up logs to saw for the arks? ::)
:D :D
I had a guy show up to buy my splitter that lived about an hour south of me, he said they had 12.75" of rain in 2 days. :o
This is in addition to just about constant rains we've had this year. June was the wettest on record, July the 5th wettest. I'm guessing August will go down in the top 3.

I got a few pics of a rainbow on saturday evening, I was at John's Cove Beach at a place called Cape Forchu with my daughter and noticed the rainbow of, of course I didn't have my camera so I took these pictures with my cell phone.
It was one of the most vivid rainbow I can recall seeing and was wondering if the angle of the sun (being close to fall and in the evening) had anything to do with it.

Here's what my wife and I saw on the way home from the Astoria Sunday Market today. This was between Westport, OR and Clatskanie, OR. It did not touch the ground and went back up into the clouds. Pretty rare scene for this part of the country. I e-mailed a couple photos to a local TV news station and they e-mailed back saying they were going to use my photos on the 10 o'clock newscast.

Nice picture woodbill2, around this part of the country we really don't like seeing those things, they usually do touch ground, for quite a while ;). Thanks for sharing.
We get'm here to, but not very often. It's becoming almost an annual event to see where one tore down through the woods. It used to be very rare and in remote places.

Nice pics everyone!
This might help you out with the under exposed sunset Norm.
The other day I was messing around with a point and shoot trying to see if I could get a sunset picture, I found that if I point the camera at different places in the sky and push the button part way to set the exposure then point it to where I wanted to take the picture I would get different results, by setting the exposure at a darker part of the sky then taking the picture closer to the sun it would come out exposed closer to what I was seeing. Also I was able to shut the flash off on this camera, if unable to turn off the flash you can try covering it with your finger.
Thank you for the tip!

Kinda looks like a painting, Ron ... with the peaks rising above the smoke. Your picture reminded me that it was 30 years ago this month that I camped on Mt. Hood. I think it was around 2 years after Mt. St. Helen.
One of our late summer camping trips a few years ago out to the Red Deer River Recreation Area south west of Sundre Alberta. Ron's Mnt Hood photo back on Sept 5,2012 reminded me of working up on the Nass River in northern BC. We would leave a cloud covered camp with rain and go 24 km by road up hill all the way pretty much and once up there it was clear blue sky, down below still clouds. There was a coastal range we could look out at that was covered with a glacier and some snow on top by September. Tried to get photos, but my crappy camera had no zoom. Those were the days of film. ;D

There were several more taken over about a 10 - 15 minute period.
Looked like it was a long night and the morning was having a hard time waking up. :D
It was a long night actually. A sunrise like that usually spells a hot day ahead. There were several more pictures in between those. After so many sunrises out here sometimes I tend to not pay much attention to them. This one just happened to catch my eye. Made me think of Tom and his love for water scenes.

Need to bring this thread up again :)
Sunset tonight.

Nothing more beautiful then sun sets and even some morning sun rises. Ive seen some beautys here in Ohio but some of the best has been in Alberta farm county.
For all of you that are new to this thread, take the time to go through it. You won't be disappointed. I went through the whole thing again. It's a good one.
We had a very unusual red sunrise the other morning and I expected rain or snow, but we were surprised with sunny day and this sunset at about 6 PM.
The ice in the field, beyond the Larch trees, is from natural snowmelt, but makes a great ice rink for outdoor skating.
Tom
That red is so bright it almost hurts.
That is stunning.
There have been volcanic eruptions in Hawaii and Indonesia reecently, putting a lot of dust in the atmosphere. Should make for some nice sky scenes for a while.
LeeB, ever the romantic, eh? :D
Don't tell anybody, but actually yes I am. The dust and ash actually do make for nice colors.
We had a great one last night here, but I did not take a photo.... ::)

Yup, we get the best sunsets when the Aussies have big bushfires and the smoke drifts across the Tasman sea.
The PNW has been having some great sunsets these past few weeks as well. I saw a news report out of Vancouver BC that said air tests showed the great sunsets were partly due to air pollution all the way from China [across the Pacific]. Kind of scary thought.
Tom
I was out in the saguaro field when the incoming moisture from a pacific storm collided with the desert air, producing some spectacular cloud formations. I thought it might be fun to start a thread just about clouds; big ones, little ones, stormy ones, calm ones and desert and other extreme climate ones. So here goes with those clouds from yesterday.
Evaporating clouds. This formation lasted perhaps 10 minutes before disappearing. Darlene says they look like snowflakes.
Lenticular clouds. These are another evaporating cloud type.
Iridescent clouds. On very rare occasions they can fill the sky with shimmering mother of pearl colors.
The Dragon over the Galiuro Mountain upslope. This one is what is called a standing lenticular cloud. These form over mountains and can stay in place for some time, up to many hours, forming out of thin air as the wind rises over the mountain, then disappearing on the leeward side. This can result in a lenticular cloud that just sits over the mountain as the air passes by. Sorry, but it took three photos to take a picture of this one it was so big, covering the whole width of the sky. The photos run south to north in order.

May the beauty of the miracles of nature show itself to you all.

I took this picture yesterday while out riding my 4-wheeler. This time of year I try to ride every Sunday for a few hours anyway. (hunting for sheds). I call it therapy. ;D Although I have an awesome job on a beautiful ranch, sometimes I can forget that and going on a ride or hike seems to remind me of how lucky I really am.

It's too bad there wasn't a telescope there but there is a picture on the internet of the Martian sky. In it, you can see the earth glowing like a star. The article said that if you were standing there, you could see the earth and our moon. Pretty cool stuff.

When I look at the art that's nature provides, I wonder how mere humans could create anything more spectacular. The other day I came through a small field that was yellow with flowers I think are black eyed susans. I took a picture but it didn't capture the sight. Almost ever time of the year there are flowers in the woods and fields.
These are from yesterday afternoons rain storm in this area. Dang powerful. I did not take these.

That happens just about everyday here during the summer. They pop up, dump a couple inches of rain in a few minutes then disappear.
We were out riding Saturday evening and took these. I was trying to outrun the rain coming from behind us. Took these from the top of a bridge. My photographer was a little shaky :D

Never heard of a rainbow like that. that looks pretty. Does it last just a few minutes? Like a regular rainbow?
It is a piece of a regular rainbow. Crepuscular rays are what you see when sunlight shines through openings in clouds, giving the impression the light is spreading out. That is actually a perspective effect, like how rows of a crop in a field look as you pass them. Anticrepuscular rays are what you sometimes get in the sky opposite the sun where it looks like the rays are coming together again. Also a perspective effect on parallel light. Anticrepuscular rays are more uncommon than their spreading counterparts and are usually only seen near sunrise and sunset.
Hope the explanation helps. ;D
It lasted like 15 minutes. ;D ;D ;D

I went back to the post I made over 13 years ago that started this topic. Two things stick out, one, the picture file size limits were much lower then, and two, a good many of the first posters on this topic are no longer with us.
It's great to see this topic is still going and growing.
I'm glad to see it going and growing too. I enjoy all of the pictures. It's good to capture some of them. Some only last a few minutes and than are gone.

The next picture is from the Teton Pass just west of Jackson. You can see the cut in the distance where the road coming out of Jackson rises at a 13 degree grade. I think that Teton Pass was the steepest road we traveled.
This picture was taken east of Idaho Falls, not sure exactly where as it was taken by my brother sometime in the winter of 2013-14.
The next picture was taken on the way home. We were just south of Yellowstone NP and just west of the Teton Range. The picture is either the Tetons to the west of us or Yellowstone to the north of us.
The road in the next picture is just on the way to the west gate of Yellowstone.

Here is Old Faithful just finishing in the late afternoon sky.

Around on the east side of Yellowstone Lake looking back west at the sunset. Notice the thermal vents steaming along the shore of the lake.

A few survivor trees on the east side of the lake. You will see why I call them survivor trees in the last picture.
Some more survivors.
This is the east side of Yellowstone Lake still waiting for the cleanup or replanting. I'm not sure if this is left over from the fires some years ago or just the result of the dying Lodgepole which can be seen all over the area.

The scenery on the trip was breathtaking but the reason for the trip was not so good.
Sorry to hear you could not enjoy the trip. Nice pictures. I see alot of firewood in that last picture of dead wood.

A friend of mine that lives in Guatemala sent me this photo awhile ago.
The photo was taken just a bit east and north of his house. He doesn't know the photographers but chatted with them for a about 20 minutes while they watched the event.

It's a bridge called Te Wera Wera on the coastal walkway in New Plymouth. We where up there today to do some shopping and get pizza for lunch and got in a short walk before the rain clouds rolled in.
The bridge is pretty famous with it's own Wikipedia page even.

Lil's pic is suitable for framing.
It looks like it once was alive.
The shape is from a breaking wave at the nearby surf break.
It is a cool little bridge. It's a foot bridge in the coastal walk around New Plymouth. When they wanted to extend the walkway further there is a river in the way, and a long detour up to the road bridge. The council priced out what a basic foot bridge would cost, but some of the local businessmen decided the site deserved better. Luckily the also owned civil and mechanical engineering companies, and could chip in a couple of million$$.
Making the bridge was a mission as each rib is a different profile. They where CNC'd out of steel and welded together, then the whole bridge was trucked down to the site and craned into place.
The bridge also point directly at the Mt, which you can faintly see in this shot. Usually it's perfectly framed from that spot.

Coming back from a fireworks show last night and Lil says, wow the mountain looks cool tonight. Wish we had a picture of it like that. No problem. Probably should have gone out of town, away from the street lights, but just went down the street to the local park and set up the camera there.
Have tweaked the contrast curve a little to make the image look better, and more like the actual view, but no real retouching.
It does look good.
Nice!

It's actually 2 consecutive shots on her new phone that Google has recognized and automatically stitched into one. We commented at the time how it was impossible to capture the whole scene in just one image. Good rains I guess. It was a great picture!
Fire is right.
Aurora isn't common here, so when the news said it might be seen, Lil says, "we should go have a look". No worries, think best spot will be 3,000 ft up the Mt, looking South. OK, it's a few degrees above freezing and pitch dark (no moon) when we rock up to the viewing platform at Dawson Falls visitor centre.
Anyway the lights where barely visible to the naked eye. A camera is more sensitive to low light colours, so you could capture more than you could actually see. Several of the folks only saw on camera viewfinders.

For reference he was shooting ISO 10,000 with a F2.0 lens and 25 sec exposure. My pic was ISO 1600, F 3.5 and a 30 sec exposure, and a bit of tweaking with the contrast levels.
Anyway Lil's bucket list is to see a real overhead Aurora. Tricky in the Southern hemisphere.

Wind changing to the South usually brings clear and cold. It wasn't as warm as the sunshine may appear, but the sky was such a clear blue today I had to stop and snap a picture. Going to be the first good frost of the winter tonight.

This was our wake up this morning. :)
A friend of Stacy's

This was his wake up yesterday morning.
This was from a couple of weeks ago. By our swimmin pond and cabana. It's 2 of the prettiest sunsets I've seen here I think.

That bottom photo is one of the best I have ever seen thanks for scharing.
It make you want to be there! surfer-smiley
I thought this one would be a unique addition to this thread.
Taken by my son Steve, while driving the boat AND flying the drone to get the picture, with his son and 2 nephews in the boat.

Now I got it!!
Kinda looks like the guy on his riding lawn mower with his postage stamp lawn. :D
I have no idea how he gets those square/round pictures with the drone cam but that lake is about 1.5 miles wide and about 5 miles long. Somehow when he does the pics that way with the drone the camera scrunches the horizons to fit the frame but keeps the center very close to actual prespective. he gets some pretty cool pictures with it. I think the camera has 4 lenses and it hangs on a gimble.
The drone is not a cheap one and he said the camera cost more than the drone
Fisheye lens. ;)
Neat picture.
"Living in a fisheye lens stuck in the camera's eye."
Not a terrible song to get in my head...
Limelight- Rush
Actually the camera has 5 lenses. 1 on the bottom and one on each side and it uses all 5. Saves a 3 to 5 sec burst stream of up to 60 frames per second that he then has to process on computer in the software for the camera. Also shoots every thing in RAW. Whatever that means.
A glimpse of the moon from a setting sun tonight. Puffy clouds below.

That's a great picture.
Made me wonder if @Sedgehammer (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=43840) is ok. Haven't seen any posts from him in a month or so and he's a pretty regular poster. Hope they're doing ok and just too busy or something.
I noticed that he seemed to drop off totally

Winter sunset over Beaver Lake Arkansas. Shot from my deck while grilling pork chops tonight.
Wonder if the fish are cold? ;D
Clouds were just right for a good sunset last night. High overcast from a storm system out to the Nth East, but clear out over the sea / horizon as the sun was setting. So the whole sheet of cloud got a wash of colour as the sun set.

I only wandered out onto the street with the cellphone to get a view of the Mt, with the sun setting behind it. If I'd been better prepared I should have gone to a better spot.

Beautiful picture 👍
A rainbow in the middle of winter?
I batcha that don't happen too often
It has happened more than once this year, we get a few days of winter then it all melts, it has happened about 5 times this winter, really tough on the roads too. Between being "partially surrounded" by the ocean and on the edge of the jet stream the weather does really change back and forth from winter to spring like conditions.
It is giving +8c for a few days then back to winter -5c for a 3 or 4 days.
The Moon tonight at 8:38 pm. Pic from my Samsung s22 phone.

for one opening for the morning to shine through.
Maple Moon.

Double rainbow.
Sunset, taken from my living room window a few days ago.
The clouds were thick enough to shade the sun that you could see the edge without burning your eyes out.

One of the better Winter days :) Was some frost this morning, but it got up to about 13C by the afternoon. Not exactly warm, but not unpleasant.
Just after sunset, South Coast of Rarotonga. New Moon in the top of the picture.

Almost 40 days without rain here in Nob Hill, Arkansas. Think I felt two or three drops when that cloud passed over.
One of our nice Winter days. Breeze was a bit crisp, but not a cloud in the sky. Pic looking back at the Mt from the end of the mail run. Still a few boxes to pick up on the way back, but this is up at the end of a gravel road where I turn around. Nice place to stop and eat a sandwich around lunchtime. Sky was the same for 360°
