Im leaning toward nyssa sylvatica.  Aka black gum/black tupelo.  Did it drop little black berries and have a dying christmas tree look to its branch structure?

If the trunk is an impossible to split spiral grain with a shaggy somewhat yellowish fiber thats it.  Burns good and hot but it pops alot and can be horrible to split.  I chainsaw the bad rounds into halves.

It is green ash, Fraxinus pennslyvanica.  Note the compound leaves and opposite branching.
