Sawmills and Milling / Re: Auction Sawmills
Last post by SawyerTed - Yesterday at 01:05:14 PM
After looking at the website, TMG mills look like so many other entry level mills.  They are pretty light weight to hit a certain price point.  For my money, I'd save my pennies for something more substantial.

And spotted owl also breed with the barred owl. And I see those in 30-40 year old softwood forest.

Forest Education / Re: Current Emerald Ash Borer ...

If the borer is like most, it would have exited any dry firewood before it was taken to a campground. Why no ban on green sawlogs moving? That was likely where most moved volume wise. There is ash all over creation in these parts and I guarantee more ash sawlogs or pulpwood moved than firewood because very little of it is bought or used of any significant volume for firewood. I haven't burned 1 cord in 30 years. The older folks in the family never touched it for firewood. If it wasn't maple, beech or yellow birch they would let you know what to do with it.  ffcheesy ffcheesy

Great video Jeff, these MUCC folks are spot on and should have a very solid legal case with the DNR for not basing their rulings on sound science and study. This is how it starts. Remember the Spotted Owl in the PNW that was "only able to survive" in old growth timber? Facts later proved that was not the case because they had not looked for them in other than old growth.

It's pretty evident that in today's "woke" environment it's whoever screams the loudest gets the attention.

Hopefully this gets overturned.

Back when I was using soap and water I used the same as dogbo 1 1/2 or 2 jugs a day.  Good move switching to diesel, now you can honestly use a quart or 2 a day.  Steve

Forestry and Logging / Re: Flagging tape color
Last post by mudfarmer - Yesterday at 12:17:41 PM
Around here flagging would mostly be used for marking out the landing and trails, riparian boundaries, sometimes harvest boundaries etc.

Your contract should spell out whether it is leave trees or harvest trees that are marked. "Trees to be harvested are marked with [color] paint. All marked trees must be felled." or "Trees not included in harvest are marked with [color] paint. These are not included in sale and are not to be harvested. All non marked trees are included in sale" etc etc and similar.

Wildlife trees are often marked with a W in whatever color and are not to be harvested. Bump trees on skid trails sometimes marked with a B and are to be removed after the portion of the sale beyond is harvested completely.

I'm sure there is lots of regional variation like with everything else and am curious what those might be.

The Outdoor Board / Re: WV Catfish 2024

An odd thing or two that happened was on the first day one limb was shaking but when I got to it I pulled the line towards me and the line came untied and I looked down at the line in the water with my flag with my name on the end., I grabbed for it before the fish could take off with it and got hold of it and pulled in the 7 lb flathead catfish on it. I guess I had mis tied it or a twig  got in the loop or such causing it not to close.  Anyway I got the fish and re-tied the line.

On another line I had a fish, threw him in the boat and when I got done unhooking it and put him in the life well I found the tip of the limb with knot on it had broken off. It was strong enough to hold the fish but I guess I pulled from a different angle and snapped it off. I retied it and caught another fish on it the second day too,

Mostly I just put lines in my "smokehouses" or places that looked like my smokehouses. Mostly they were in fallen tree tops. Any place that you'd fish for crappie or bluegills or toss a plastic worm after a bass is a likely spot for a big predator catfish.

Ed, Lets start at the beginning WELCOME to the FF.

I can not help with the mills you are looking at. Nothing wrong with starting on the cheap. I have owned Grizzly wood working machines but have moved to American old iron.  But some have and love the Grizz. I am on my 3rd mill all used, there are some deals on used if one wants to look.

Forestry and Logging / Flagging tape color
Last post by livemusic - Yesterday at 11:54:41 AM
If your tract is to be logged, are you supposed to mark the 'take' trees or the 'leave' trees? Is there a certain color or does it vary a lot?

Do you favor using flagging or paint and what is most common? If paint, how do you mark it and do you just use a brush or what? TIA!

Drying and Processing / Re: Air Drying vs Kiln Drying
Last post by Stephen1 - Yesterday at 11:41:42 AM
tawilson , air drying in the winter below freezing  does not really happen and freezing does now sterilize the wood as stated. Our northern winter climate might dry wood a bit but it really starts drying again as the winds of March start blowing.
