Well, that's her full name. We call her Ice, and when Tammy and Stacy ain't listening I call her Icky cause I can't spell. She had the name when she came to us. She was 6 months old on the 8th of June. For just a pup she is really doing well. Catching on quick and has won me over. For some reason she gravitates towards me. She is laying at my feet right now even thought Tammy and Stacy are just in the other room. She won't never take Sydney's place but she is quickly finding a place of her own. Its amazing how dogs can do that. The other dogs, even Scooter, love her. She really has brought a different life into the house. I can't get a picture of her eyes without getting red eye, and the red eye fix is way different then her eyes actually look. Her name comes from her color and those ice blue eyes. You just cannot see in the photo how startling blue they are.
I'm glad to hear things are going well with the new one.
I've had 4 dogs. 2 of them gravitated to women, 2 to men. The 2 that were "women" dogs were raised with women as the primary caregiver. I know one of the "men" dogs was raised by a man. I kinda use that as my theory. I'm sure someone will come along and destroy it, though. :D
I'm glad she's fittin' in Jeff :) :) :)
Flash had one brown eye inherited from his mother and one blue eye inherited from his father. :)
Well Ron, I hate to be the one.... :D
Ice seems to gravitate to me, but so far, men visitors shes's not fond of. The neighbor walked over in the yard yesterday to meet her, and she wouldn't have anything to do with him, Maybe it was because he approached us outside. Time will tell. She's been a sweety with anyone that has come to the front door, but since she has been here they have all been women other then my son, who she is fine with, and my brother in law the Dog Warden, who she was also fine with.
She is a nice looking dog
Hey Jeff
Hope to meet the Ice Princess on Thursday

8) New life in da house !
Tammy got a more "dignified" picture of Ice. :) Didnt have to rework here eyes on this one, but they still dont show all the blue
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/ice_blue.jpg)
You know that cartoon Sam the Sheepdog and Ralph the wolf? Well Ice has a Sam look on her face. :D
punch the time card nailed to the tree and go sit on the hill overlooking the sheep and watch ralph the wolf trying to steal sheep all day ! yep she has the look !
Waaa!!? Who's that with the camera this hour of the night. Yawn! smiley_sleeping smiley_sleeping
What an absolutely beautiful dog! :)
I'm gonna support Ron's theory that dogs have male or female preference and take it one step further, strictly based on my own observation. If, when the pups are very young, the primary human caregiver is male, the pups tend to respond better to the male leader of the house. If the caregiver was female the same result. You can't really test the theory of preference outside what the pup considers his pack (or family). Dogs will position themselves as near to whom they determine the "leader" naturally.
Our puppy, Buckshot is four months old and although he listens much better to me when I give him a command, and he loves me to death, he prefers to take his bones to Cowboy Bob's feet to chew them. :D Although our pup had females that did interact with him before he was weaned, the primary caretaker was male.
That's pretty much what I was talking about. With our current dog, he goes right to my daughter, not my wife. Does that mean she's the dominant female. :D
We owned Aussies for about 20 years; great dogs; you'll love her. Any livestock around? They'll try to herd anything.
She looks like a fine addition to the family, Jeff. 8)
We used to have a Aussi/Sheperd cross.
That dog would kill any snake, any time, anywhere. Just tear 'em up. Pick um up and shake them so hard you couldn't see dog or snake, just a large blur :D
I miss that dog :'(
we've got an aussie/border collie cross, she's about 8 months old. She's super smart and likes to herd the kids since we don't have any critters.
Those Aussies are smart dogs. Be careful Jeff, or she will be runnin the forum soon.
Our Aussie was brought home by my brother Chris as a weeks old pup, She was Mom's dog but was always overjoyed to see Chris. Mom named her Sally Ann after a pet pig she had when she was a child. Mom and Dad are gone now and Sally lives next door at Chris's house. She sticks to him like glue. When he tells her he has to go to work she looks down right depressed. She has one tan eye and one pale blue eye. Mamma always loved a fuzzy dog.
Oh yea, you can always tell where Sally has been, dem dogs shed ALOT!
Jon
Sydney was an aussie and he was the worst shedding dog I ever saw.
I miss ice. :'( usually this time of night I lay on the floor and throw her toy down the hall. she comes tearing back and sits in the middle of my back and drops the thing on my head. I was thinking about asking Tammy to play here at the hotel, but figured I better not go there. no_no
:D :-X
That is a great looking dog. 8) Aussie shepherds and heelers are super smart and love to play. My first heeler loved to chase a bucket lid just like a frisbee. My brother once wondered what would happen if he threw the lid into the pond, thinking the lid would float. ::) It sank, and Blue dived after it. He was gone long enough my brother feared he had drowned my dog. He finally surfaced, lid in mouth, blowing water high in the air. :o The pond was off limits after that.
Looks like we got us a pool fool.
Ice Jumping in pool clip. (https://forestryforum.com/media/ice_swimming.wmv)
Depends on how your doggy was treated around water. Some people will frighten the dog when he's young by picking him up and tossing him in and he'll stay away from water when your around. But, if he goes in on his own he'll be swimming like a frog. :)
Can she get out on her own? I'm afraid to start my pup in the pool for fear she'll get confident and then will jump in when we're not around, not able to get out.
Yeah, I'de want to be around if the dog jumped in. If there is steps (not a ladder) she may be able to figure it out. Once she did, she would remember the way afterward.
nope she cant, but our dogs dont roam outside by thier selves. They go out with us. Actully we are trying to come up with a solution for her getting out simply so se doesnt need to be lifted out. She seems to have no urge to get in there unless we are in there at the moment.
My daughter's dog Oliver can't stand to be on the sidelines if anyone is in the pool.
He doesn't necessarily want to be in the pool just closer to the action. Before the float, he would just run around wearing off his pads on the concrete.
Here he is stressing out over my daughter being in the pool.
Yea, Scooter has a float toy too. :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/scooter_jeff_swmming.jpg)
Jeff, Forgive me but that float seems to have a pretty deep draft. :D
Its because of that big dog on it. ;D
Also in my defense, that raft has a mesh center so you lay in the water and not on the raft. Only the oustide edge and pillow and occupant are full of air.
Hopefully there won't be any blow-outs. ;D
Now I dont care who ya are, that wernt funny. :D
Keep her toe nails clipped. :D :D :D
8)
I don't know how you can stand it this early in the year. Last I heard the ambient temperature was just in the 90's. Y'all are going to freeze your tookus off.
If nothing else, I would leave some floating devices in the pool in the hopes that a dog might be able to hold onto one till you get home. Drowned pets is a common occurance down here. It's even unnerving for wild animals to get stranded in a pool. It happens a lot to squirrels.
I'll come up with a solution. We can have ice floating in our pool.
For duck hunting I would have a carpeted wood ramp hanging off the side of the boat , shoot a duck and dog jumps out over the other side and swimming back to boat dog would come back to the opposite side of ramp and try and climb up .Never would come near the ramp. Never seen anything so helpless as a tired wet dog trying to be pulled in over the edge of a boat .
I like the chair ramp you made and it is a definate dog saver .
I think you might have a circus dog , very smart !
Well, it looks like we got us a pretty good Frisbee dog!
Here's a short video clip. about 1 meg so not to awful long for slow connections. Ice has turned out to be a great addition to the family. She's still just a pup and still learning but she is a sweetheart. Her one fault is inbred within her. She is very very protective of the family. So much she barks as visitors longer then appropriatte. We have started to take her more with us when we go out to get her used to more human contact, but she still has a real issue with male visitors to the house.
Ice catching a Frisbee video clip (https://forestryforum.com/media/ice_frisbee.wmv)
I've heard dat BC pills make them do dat, Jeff. Did she just start? ;D
Norm
Reminds me of the dog we had years ago, Snickers...
She was a mean frisbee dog! It's pretty fun when you get a frisbee just low enough to the ground that the dog can see it at its eye level, going straight as an arrow. Snickers would never run so fast as when she was in pursuit of one of those low flying, speedy frisbees, and there always seemed to be more of an act of defiance and pride whenever she snapped one of those low speedy frisbees out of the air.
And of course, she ran back for more. ;D
Good lookin' dog, Jeff, and talented, to boot! ;D
How COOL! she's a real star!
Don't they have frisbee-comps for dogs?
She'd win most frisbeeish and best looking, all at once!
asy :D
Wewere trying to get a good video clip of Ice catching the frisbee... :o
www.forestryforum.com/media/ice_crash.wmv
She sure has turned into my pal. She's with me much of the time since I got back from bear camp. If I take a nap she has a position she thinks she needs to be in.
I was trying to get her to bring me socks this morning but didn't get very far. I guess you couldnt getme to put my socks in my mouth either. :D
Dumb Dawg, you throw it away and she brings it back. :D :D :D :D
That video is hillarious!
Who is it laughing psychotically!?
asy :D
I cant say. :-\ :D
Funny stuff...and the sound effects are half of it. :D
Tom thought there was a chicken involved. :D That was just me getting runned over.
HAHAHA I thought it was wrong, and I just looked it up.
I thought I'd sneak in here and change it while no-one was looking.
Ya sprung me, Puhskolly!
asy :D
Well, what's remarkable is that you have any knowledge of our constitution in the first place. :) I don't know diddly about the constitutions down under, or in Kiwiland...
We never received the 'Charter of Rights and Freedoms' here until the early 80's, during Trudeau's years. With Queen Elizabeth II's approval, the Charter was brought into effect in Ottawa on April 17, 1982. I used to have a copy of it from school and it was not much bigger than a 16" x 20" poster. I bet not many even know about it or even seen it in Canada. We don't even teach our kids about Canada in school. ::)
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/charter/index.html
[From Wikipedia]
'The Charter was preceded by the Canadian Bill of Rights, which was introduced by the government of John Diefenbaker in 1960. However, the Bill of Rights was only a federal statute, rather than a constitutional document. Therefore, it was limited in scope and was easily amendable. Furthermore, as a federal statute, it had no application to provincial laws. This motivated some within government to improve rights protections in Canada. The movement for human rights and freedoms that emerged after World War II also wanted to entrench the principles enunciated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.[1] Hence, the Government of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau enacted the Charter in 1982.'
Man has this thread taken a twist. Dang dawg. :D :D :D
I played it loud so the guy in the next office could hear.
He says it sounds like a monkey :D
Icey has traded in her Frisbee for the winter. We just came in from a game of you kick it and I'll go get it.
Notice the pig roast tables in the background. They have the last snow on them, but one more snow event like the last one, and you wont see them any more. Icey loves plowing into the fresh snow to get here football.
If it weren't for a few dark patches in her fur, you'd lose her in the snow. :)
When she goes after that football you do. She just loves to dive in raising a big snow cloud around her. She does love da snow. To bad her buddy don't. (ME)
I don't mind it if I'm on a path or corridor with very little brush and on snow shoes. The worst is trying to get through woods with a lot of undergrowth. Hazel is about the worst I've experienced, it seems to hold the snow up and there are air pockets. You sink clear to the bottom of the snow and it seems it's twice as much as on a cleared (brush wise) pathway. I was out the other day on the woodlot and the crust held me up pretty good. We had 2 inches the other day and snow coming for about 4 days starting Friday. ;D
Nice picture, Jeff 8)
I like the label on the ball :D
Icy loves us. :)
I love the bond between mans (and womans) best friend. :)
I've been out of town for about a week and a half, and my "best friend" stopped eating. :( She ate good tonight, though. ;)
Icy goes everywhere with me outside and I found out recently that she can be like having an extra hand. Well, almost. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrmkKALvtu4
She looks so happy when she's given a job to do! 8)
P.S. Look how skinny you are!
sheesh, she carried it ALL that way, and then ya took it off her?!?!
Seriously, she's GORGEOUS, no wonder you're so crazy about her.
Oh, and, lookin' slim there, Boss!!! :)
asy :D
Something looks diffrent?

Icy is always fun. So much energy.
Icy is really a character, She likes to get dirty, but likes to get cleaned up as well, so I tell her when she's looking a little rough and she takes care of things from there. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nQoqEkBIwI
that's cute.
It's really cute! 8)
Everyone should have a dog like Ice 8)
My last dog, some 20 years ago was the best one we had at home. But it got to running with the neighbors' dogs, which is not good. And my mother would not keep it leashed when outside on it's own is why it took to running. Then dogs being dogs they got to chasing livestock. One day it came missing and I went looking. Didn't find it. Until...one day I was mowing grass and could smell something. Looked out under the spruce trees behind the house. There was the dog, it had been shot and crawled home to die in under the trees. Never had a dog since.
It had one blue eye and one brown. Was a cross between Husky and Shepard and was a mild mannered dog.
I wish our dogs would learn to wash up. They seem to think rolling in a puddle is the hieght of cleanliness. ;D
We've got a wireless hotspot in town now, so I can watch all of the Youtube videos everyone is always posting. 8) 8) I think I could get really spoiled with highspeed. :D :D
Dave
You should be spoiled Dave 8) 8) 8)
If I had it at home, I'd probably never get anything done. ::) That's funny, it's faster, but I'd waste more time on the computer. Must be an oxymoron or something. ::) ::)
I was parked, somewhat haphazardly, on the driveway to the town garage, you have to get pretty close to the town hall to connect. After about a half hour I looked up to see a couple of racoons waddling around to see if there was anything in the compactor buffet for them. ::) That's gonna make for a strange sight, me and a couple of varmints hanging out at the dump all night. :D
Dave
No stranger than a black duck nesting in a hardwood forest or a red fox sitting on top of those big round bales of hay like a house cat, next to the feed lot. :D ;D
We got Icy when she was 6 months old so never got to see her as a little puppy. The woman that we got her from stopped by a couple nights ago to give me a present. A picture she obtained of Icy and her siblings. The little girl is holding Ice. :) Looks to me like Icy might have been the runt by looking at the photo.
Awwwwwwww. That is way too cute. Yer right... Icy does look like the runt. My experience with 'runts' is limited but the ones that survive sure seem to turn out to be the smartest, best dogs a guy could hope for.
She's truly beautiful, but I guess you knew that...

What you guys weren't watching the Westminster dog show!
Nope, Ice likes American Idol. She doesn't think she's a dog.
I'm really looking forward to the day when I can "get 5" from Icey :)
Oliver turned 2 this last week, he had a GREAT birthday, he got new rope chewy toys, and a big elbow of beef. He was such a happy puppy!!! He was jumping around and around, it was great fun, just like a 2yo birthday party should be :)
asy :D
I don't much enjoy going in stores and shopping, but I don't mind going along and sitting in the truck as long as Icey comes too. We keep each other company and watch people. Its interesting to watch her watch people. I can get a sense from her body language who she would like to meet, and who she might like to eat. :)

This is my sister's dog Gus. We bred him here, he was in a litter of 10 :o, All beautiful Aussies in blue merle, black tri, and red merle. He was exactly 1 year old when I took this picture. They were born on Valentines day so it's easy to remember. Remind you of anyone you know Jeff? :)

Would those be the pups pictured on your website?
That's some of them. I think Gus is one of those in that picture. We got several really good pictures I may be able to find. There's been a number of litters, those Aussies are great dogs.
She's so CUTE Jeff,
I can really understand why you adore her, and it seems fairly mutual.
asy.
Ice and I took a break from our Pig Roast table chair and seating construction, repair and refurb shop for a couple minutes. :)

Wow! What a smart girl!
*edit* Those tables are looking pretty good!
Can I borrow Ice to train my grandson?
That Ice......She's got a lot of cool tricks like that! :D :D :D :D
She is a good dog ;) :)
Its been awhile since I uploaded any Icey Videos. Here are a couple we took yesterday and today. :) Icey was 4 years old this December.

Jeff, Just like kids they like the box better then what is inside. :D
It doesn't seem possible that it's been FOUR years! She sure is gorgeous!
We sold a litter of Aussies a month ago. We have been getting a couple calls a week, from one woman in particular, about how much they have been able too teach them already. One of her tricks is to pick up sticks while on a walk, and carry them back to the house where they are deposited in a woodbox on the porch. I visited a week ago while in the area and saw it for myself. She also comes when you call, goes in the kennel, sits, stays, lays down, crawls, and speaks all on command. Probably 80% of the time. Pretty good work for a 13 week old puppy!!!!!
I'm sure looking forward to meeting her!!! It's right up on my list of things to do in USA, vying with seeing the Grand Canyon. I think she'll possibly be more fun! 8)
Only you'll probably need to frisk Steph when we leave, she's a sucker for dogs. Like me... hehe
asy :D
PS: Can't BELIEVE it's been 4 years!
Thought is was about time for anudder Icey Video. :)

I never get tired of seeing Icey play...what a great dog! 8)
I'm not sure who's having more fun...not that it matters. :)
That was FUN. Steph and I just watched it and she said "What a cooooool Dog".
Told her she'll get to meet Icey soon, she's thrilled, so we went and looked at a whole mess of other FF Videos of Icey on YouTube. Steph particularly liked the one in the car asking for treats.
Oh, she also really liked the Pool Dunking thing, she wants to know if it's still there?
asy :D
Yep, still have the pool dunker. Hopefully we get some warm weather for the pigroast this year to put it to good use!
Yah, only thing is, "warm weather" for you may not quite be the same as "warm weather" for us. I keep trying to tell Steph it may not be warm enough to swim, but she keeps saying "but it's summer"... Ah, yeah, but...
Do you think it'll be over 30c?
Asy, your right "what a cooool dog". I just now looked at the last four or five videos of the Icey. I look forward to meeting Asy and Icey at the pigroast (and all the other FF members).

I'm pretty positive it will be over 30F :)
aaah... I have a feeling I'm getting screwed on the exchange rate there boss :-\
Fishy, looking forward to meeting you too :)
I can give you an estmated narrow range that the temperature could range within on that day. Remember this is only an estimate from living here all my life.
It shoulld be between 50 and 100 degrees F. That's the best I can do, :)
Icey and I were out enjoying the day today for a little break from upgrading to the new servers. :)

That would be between 10°C and 38°C. Put this way, it sure sounds cold!
38 sounds OK, but I didn't realise the thermometers went down as far as 10... I think ours start above that... :o
Boss, that's an absolutely beautiful pic of Icey, could you please email me the full res shot of it? :)
Asy .. pack a double lined nighty ;D In august it could get down to single digits :P
Thanks Marcel, I went out on the weekend and bought thermal singlets :)
I'm just scared of what Warbird will say if he joins this conversation :o
We're visiting with him first and I don't know if I really want to know how cold it is there... :-\
Boss... How old is Icey now???

Icey is not quite 4 1/2. her birthday is the first week of December.

Yes it does! 8)
We sure will, Subsailor, and my Mum too! 8) But ya gotta watch her, she's a partyer :o
Are you going to be there too???
I'm HANGING out for the "who's coming to the pig roast" thread so I can FINALLY say I AM!!!
I've been saying, since the piggy roast started, "I'll try to get there next year"... This time I'm COMING. And we've worked a great USA/CAN holiday around the piggy roast (yes, the pig roast WAS the primary reason for coming to the USA...)
SEEYA THERE!!!

I tired something new as we were out pre-prepping the pool for its winter's nap. The pool is Icey's favorite toy. I put my camera in a ziplock bag and had her dive in. :)

Unbelievable, cross her with a lab for a super duck dog. :D
Thanks
She IS part duck, isn't she???
I know I watched her fish tennis balls out of the pool and thought WOW!!!
Oliver doesn't like getting his face wet, he's funny, when we go into the lagoon he has his own doggie-float-vest, it's cool! If he's not wearing the life jacket he tries to climb out onto your head, which is NOT much fun with a dog of his size!!!
asy :D
That was pretty cool ;D
Hey Jeff,
I can't remember since it has been almost 20 years since I have lived in Michigan, but how far is Harrison from Traverse City? I remember working on a crew to build some townhomes on top of a hill in Boyne City back in the end of 1989. We stayed in a nice A-frame cabin on a lake, and went fishing every day at lunch and after work on the Boyne River. I loved the Polish boiled dinner that my coworker and friend made with a steelhead that I caught there in the park at the entrance to the Boyne River. We also caught a lot of salmon there.
Oh, those were the good old days when I was fit an full of vim and vigor. Time sure does fly...
Its probably a good two hours away. Tammy and I ate in Traverse City last weekedn. We took thelong scenic route home from the cabin down around the cost from the bridge to Traverse City, then across through Cadillac and on home. Usually a 3 hour trip took almost 7. That area is one of the most scenic in all of lower Michigan.
I grew up in a little town called Lakeview. Know where that is at?
Yup, my Sister lives in Weidman, and we used to do a bit of fishing at six lakes. Not too far east of Lakeview
Quote from: Jeff on September 06, 2010, 03:56:01 PM

6 miles east, to be exact. My grandparents lived there and that is where I deer hunted most of time. My grandparents are now both gone, but my uncles still live there. One still is on the 20 acres that my grandparents had, and the younger one recently purchased 10 acres right down the road in the same block with just a couple of parcels between them. I miss that land a lot. Killed my first buck there on opening day of '85. Got 3rd place in the local contest with that big bodied deer too.
There are a LOT of deer between there and you.
Great video, Jeff! I had a heeler years ago who loved to fetch bucket lids. My brother was taking care of things while I was gone. He thought the lid would float, and tossed it into the pond. It sank, and Blue dived after it. He was gone long enough my brother began to think he had drowned my dog. He said when he resurfaced with the lid, the dog blew water 3 feet in the air out of his nose. :D

You people wouldn't be able to stand me if I had grandkids. ;)
Might be that your grand kids would get eye burns from the flash going off to often , aimed at them :D
Icey is almost 5 years old now and actually showing some signs of slowing down. This morning she's just lounging in one of the computer chairs, the only chairs she is allowed in, watching Tammy make breakfast. :)

I'll bet she can move fast if Tammy drops a piece of bacon on the floor!
Sausage ;)
Five years! That doesn't seem possible. :)
Yep, I know, seems like only a couple years. She was born in December of 2005 and we got her in June when she was about 6 months old.
Wow, that IS amazing, I remember when you first got her!
Mind you, I just worked out that Oliver is going to be 4 in February, which is scary, too...

Surely that is not a recent picture, unless you moved south, way south.
It just feels WRONG around here today. Icey had started to limp off and on the last couple weeks, this last weekend she went to only walking on 3 legs, carrying her right front. I got her into the vet this morning, and after she nipped at the vets face for trying to prod her foot, (I warned him her lip was curling) he decided he needed to keep her and sedate her so he could figure out what is going on. The only time she has ever been away from home with out Tammy or I was when she was a pup and got fixed. When I am home, she is always right here near me. It just don't feel right not having her here. I hope they call to come get her today, but they said it might be over night. :-\
pits for a family member to leave home, our dog is an inherited grand dog that I turned down for a month. Now I look forward to seeing him in the evening, and really don't like leaving him when we travel.
Soft in my old age.
They said I can come and get her at 3:00. No answer to what is wrong. They are going to give her pain meds and antibiotics to try. :-\
Sounds like joint trouble possibly. Hope she recovers soon.
It would be a wierd time of year for her to get it, but did they test her for Lyme's disease?
Pretty sure its something to do with her paw. The foot is a bit swollen, and they said the pads are warmer then they should be. I think there could actually be a small bit of glass in it from somewhere. The vet said that was very possible, and it would either work out, or abscess. All I know is that it cost $163 today to give her a nap, shave her paw, and send me home with 12 antibiotic pills and 12 pain killers. She came out of the vet walking normally, but she was still groggy. Now that she is back home, shes limping again.
Pretty sure they didn't doc, or they would have said.
I hope it isn't psychosomatic!!
In my next life, I am gonna be a vet!
Things are different in Canada. My dog Buzz comes north with us every summer. Loves the lake. He's a stupid lovable stereotypical yellow lab. One afternoon he came back with a face full of quills. Nothing to do but take him to the vet.
Drove 30 miles. Saw us right away. Anesthetized Buzz. Shaved his face. Pulled out the porcupine quills. Gave us some topical stuff for the wounds. Bill: $68.00 (Canadian). Back to the cabin. Total time: 2 hours, 45 minutes. Got back in time for the evening fish. Unbelievable.
Jeff. You know they didn't test for Lymes becasue you weren't billed for it! Probablity of Lymes this time of year, given the pics of your place you sent me, is about nil. Hope Icey feels better.

Maybe it's her gallbladder :D :D :D

Are you longing to get bit by one of your patients? :D
Or do a house call and surgery for $125?
And have to catch and hog tie your patient first.
And give a "dead cow discount" if it does not work? :)
And the most fun is the rectal palpation and learning to not stand directly behind a cow when they cough.
Course most of that is large animal practice, small animal practice is already very overcrowded.
Oh, and no nurses! :)

Oh, and no nurses! :)
Oh yes there are! Well, maybe they are not called Nurses, but they have em.
I always thought that when I would hear "They could not make it as a Dr., so they became a Vet" that that was balderdash. An M.D. only had to learn one species while a vet must become intimately familiar with many different physiologies.

Around here it's (or at least was) pretty much the opposite, a lot of very smart kids tried getting into vet school and ended up in med school because the openings were so few. Hope Icey is getting better everyday, our little phantom poodle is expecting her first litter of pups anyday, the wifes already nervous hope it goes ok.
She's walking on all fours today, with very little limp, not sure if that's because of the medicine numbing her down, or if she's getting better. She spent an hour outside with us as we cleared snow from last nights storm and seemed to be pretty normal.
They are called Vet Techs.
And yes, they always said that anyone that flunked anatomy classes in Vet school went on to become a people doctor cause it was easier.
Actually there are more similiarities in species than differences. Course there are reptiles but who cares about them anyway. :D
My understanding is that its very hard to get into vet school now. Very competitive.
The reason I was poking fun at vets is because their fees have gone through the roof, and there's little or no insurance coverage for the pets, so it's out of pocket cash. Do you know that a vet gets more money performing a ligament reconstruction on a labradors knee that your doctor gets for doing yours? True! Any emergency visit for your pet is very expensive, except in Canada!
My sister and Sarah's sister are both Vet Techs. It sure is like being nurses for animals, both the good and the bad. :D
Doctorb is right--Vet school is very hard to get into. It is almost at the point you need to know the right people to make it at the most desired schools. The amount they charge can be staggering, and I have seen very few times there was a "dead cow discount". More likely a disposal fee on the top of everything else :-\
Likely the staff filling out the tons of paperwork are not as necessary for the vet either. ::) ::)
Now a short story on this topic ;D
I shoe a horse named Bayley, one of a few trail horses and mules a family here in Trinity County owns. They took him in to a Redding vet for, if I remember right, what turned out to be a case of colic. He had to stay overnight.
At the time they picked Bayley back up, they were presented with a bill, and it included several charges for things that were not discussed before, nor where there any phone calls after they left him. The vet suspected melanoma on Bayley's hip, and they took a biopsy and sent it to be tested. The overall bill was a couple of thousand dollars, only half of that was for the problem they brought him down there for.
Sandy, the wife, said "What are these other charges, we never authorized any of this, and you never talked to us about it first."
The vet's reply was "We are in the business of saving lives, it isn't about the money."
Dick, the husband said "Well if it's not about the money, I guess you don't mind that we won't be paying that part of the bill"
He did mind, but they left it at that anyway. They never got the lab results of course.
Fast forward about a year. They were keeping an eye on the old horse, wondering if there was ever going to be a problem, and worrying a bit over it. On an overnight trip in the wilderness with their horses, another horseman came by their camp, whose father had been an outfitter in the county for years. They all knew each other, and were visiting and what-not quite a while, when this fellow says-
"Hey, look at that. You got one of my dad's old horses."
"How do you know that?", they asked.
"Well that's my dad's old brand right there on his hip"
They quit worrying about it after that
Grandmother used to call the local MD's horse doctors. :D
Our vet was out this morning and preg checked about 20 cows. We are about 20 miles from his office and it took him about an hour. His bill was $127.50. He left here to go to stuff a prolapsed uterus back in a cow and will probably get a similar fee for that as he charges by the hour. His wife is also a vet and does small animal work. He says she makes several times what he makes, but he doesn't have to mess with little yapping dogs or their big yapping own ers :D :D :D
I have heard large animal vets say the same thing to me. Plus, $127.50 is pretty good pay. ;D
Not quite as good as $250/hr to fix a GPS. :D
Wow Jeff, I'm sorry to hear Icey's ailing :'(
I sure know what it's like, I get really excited when I get home and Ollie's there to give me a hug and a kiss, and I can always rely on his face being right THERE when I need a puppy hug...
I hope it's just something that'll work it's way out and the antibiotics will take care of any infection. I'd sure hate to see her sore for long.
Give her a hug from me, willya :)
asy.
Icey seems to be better. She is still on medication, but the last 2 days she has shown no signs of being hurt.
Really great to hear.
Icey's feeling a lot better and getting pretty sassy. :)

Well, we know who the master is here. ::)
She's so CUTE!!!!! :)
GREAT to see her up and about and so happy!
Also go to see "my chair" that I was so comfy in at the Piggy Roast :D
Thanks!
Has Icey taken over Jeffs computer and posted human training clips on youtube? ??? ???
Glad you're feeling better Icey. :)
I was just watching this last video again, Where I'm trying to get icey to get her cow for me and all of the sudden I feel a lick on my elbow. It was Icey standing there. She had went and got me her cow. :D
That's cool :)
Tammy had a trip today, she had to haul the Marion Baseball team to Harrison, so she came home for supper and parked the bus in the driveway. :)

She probably obeys better than many students that ride that bus. ;)
It's been awhile since I posted anything on the Forum about Scooter. He's still a character and we found out last week that he just loves babies. :)

Well how cute is that! Scooter wants to play, and the little girl is completely oblivious to him.
Icey Meets a Garter Snake
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WU8VejeGmus
Way to go Tammy!!
My guess is that it is a female carrying young though articles say they are carried between midpoint and the vent.
Garter snakes are neat. :)
When I was to Jeff's, I found a couple dead ones on the street. I think Danny found one and brought it to the yard on a long stick. ;)
Icey had a different growl for that snake than I had ever heard out of her before.
Doctorb mentioned to me I had not posted on icey in a while, and he was wondering how she was. She's doing just fine. A couple weeks ago I was sent a couple pictures of Icey's sister. Her name is Dolly Blue. I think Icey is much prettier, but then I'm very biased when it comes to Icey. :)

I can see the family resemblance in this photo. :)

Good to keep up with family.
It's been a bit since I took any video of Icey, so while vacuuming and picking up the house this morning, I enlisted her help.

and she recycles!

Put Icey on the auction block. :) I could use a friend like her. I have to pick up all the plastic drink bottles in my yard before I mow grass.
Auctioning icey would be like auctioning a child. She's irreplaceable. Hard to believe she's going to be 7 years old this December.
She's a smart pup.
Your comment on the bottle recycling reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with Kramer and Newman gathering up the bottles for a mail run during Mother's Day to Mi. for the extra 5 cents on the bottles. :D :D
Next thing you know, she will be opening the refrigerator and drinking out of the milk jug :D.
Ali turned 7 this month and she's started to show her age, only 3 laps around the house when I get her excited with playing now. :D
She likes to go fishing down to the pond with me, she'll sit there and watch me fish. It's going to be very tough on me when she's not around any more.
My two favorite blondes fishing with me today.... ;D

Norm,
Looks like the water lrvel is down just a little.
Bruce
Yea the pond is WAY down due to zero rain since last June. We have a leak in the dam also that adds to the level going down.....always something. :-\
Hopefully you'll get some rain. Be hard on the crop'n without water.
Speaking of pups, our little three-legged beagle, Callie, turned 12 today.
I used to have a three legged beagle we too in one spring...named him Tip..
I gotta think that every other Beagle that ever existed was named tip or tippy. We had a Beagle named tippy as well.
Her full name is Calico Lapin (calico rabbit). Here she is before her left leg and hip was amputated.
A tripod. I'll bet that right leg and hip are arthritic from carrying all of the weight. Come to think about it, mine is and I have not been amputated (yet).
She gets help walking when she goes outside to do her business by the use of a sling which is actually a long neck scarf.
Back in the early 80's my boss had an irish setter named Britney that got hit by a snow plow. It learned not to chase snow plows, but lost a leg. It was a young dog at the time, and I can remember after she healed up that she always had a real bad limp when she was walking, but she could level out on a 3 legged run and you couldn't even tell she was missing a leg, but that was a front leg.
We had an old doe deer the same way. She had somehow lost a front leg at about the elbow. She limped badly, but could run like lightning. She always raised young.
We nicknamed her "Tripod".
We buried our irreplaceable friend this morning. We will miss her dearly. I love you Icey.
I'm so very sorry.
sorry Jeff. It is like loosing a child.
So sorry to hear this. It's like losing one of our children. She was well loved and you gave her a great life.
Sad day for sure .
Such sad news. I really loved Icey and she loved me cuz I always had a treat in my pocket. She was a beautiful loving dog. I was hopeful that I would get to see her one more time. Go well good girl....🙏
I'm so sorry Jeff and Tammy :'( :'(
Sorry for your loss.
Sad,sad news to hear. It's hard to lose a friend like that.
I'm so sorry Jeff. I know the heartache as I buried my fur friend two weeks ago, it hurts every time I go out the door and wait for her and she doesn't come.
I'm sorry to hear about Icey, Jeff and Tammy😢 They leave a big hole, because they bring so much joy while they're here! Breederman, sorry to hear of your loss as well😢
Sorry for your loss Jeff and Tammy.
I went back and read this entire topic. There are many sweet memories stored here. :)
That's terrible news to read, Jeff. We've lost three in the past three years. Worst part about owning any pet is that they don't outlive us.
I read Tammy's FB post earlier and was saddened to hear this news. I know how you felt about her. We may be facing the same in the near future with or beagle Cooter. He's 15 now and has good days and bad days but still get around pretty well. But, like all of us old guys, he takes lots more naps than he use to take.
I'm sorry for your loss, Jeff and Tammy.
So sorry to hear this Jeff.
We had to take Mandy to the vet on Monday and have her put to sleep thats two in less than a year there is a big empty spot in this house
Sorry for your loss Jeff and Tammy. I know you love all your dogs. Icey was probably extra special. :(
Our condolences from Rob , Colleen, Kami, Wiley, Lily, Natasha, and Boris.
My condolences Jeff and Tammy.
Dogs steal our hearts
Al
So very sorry to hear of the loss,
My condolences to you and Tammy,
D
Heart Breaking and I know its extremely hard. Prayers.
She was a fine Lady. I enjoyed playing frisbee with her.
Nobody loves you like your dog.
I am very sorry for your loss.
Jon
So sorry to learn about the passing of Icey, Jeff. Icey was a very special dog. Condolences to the family.
Sorry man, they are our children.
Aw, man. I'm so sorry Jeff and Tammy. I'd hoped to meet her when we visit. :( Thank you for sharing all the happy stories and pics with all of us over the years. You gave her a wonderful life.
