Pat and I are setting Saturday, September 28th, as the Chickin Crispin date, and all FF Members and Families are invited. smiley_gossip
The map on my profile shows the location of the Cabin, and I can add more driving details if needed. move_it
We will need a head count and we will also get an RSVP going as the date nears. digin1 digin_2
I plan to be there, will confirm when closer to date.
Willie
I plan to be there... most likely wife and 2 children also... 8)
The Chickin Crispin is neither intended to be an alternative to, nor a substitute for the Pig Roast. It is just a get together featuring family fun and fellowship among the FF members that are close enough to make the trip.
We will eat, make field trips and look over my Tree Farm, and maybe talk about those that do not attend. And eat. ;D
Here are links to our previous Chickin Crispins and you will quickly find out how it got it's name. :) LINK (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,43218.msg624685.html#msg624685) and LINK (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,52840.0.html)
Count us in if the mighty mississippi don't rise too much. Will check with LeroyC and Planman. Should be a good time of year..
We do have some sleeping arrangements so get your needs to me quickly.

smiley_gossip dadgum you, Charlie!
up north we call that burned chicken! :D and the grill master would get flogged. ;D
burnt chickin, seems like I remember having that somewhere in georgia last year.As i remember every one was goo gooing over some quarter sawed sycamore while the chicken was getting way too much time over the coals.I think it was at some get together just can't remember where.
Slider, they always told me the memory was the second thing to go. I just can't remember what was first. :D

Al, you sure you're not talking about them fried chicken feet? I thought they were overcooked, too. :D
As of now, wife and I plan on attending. bg
That brings us up to about 12 and we have not even started yet. :)
Al,
I hear that you are in charge this year.
May be Lynn will give us his recipe for those chikin feet
No, I'll let you deal with the landing gear. I am gonna stay with the parts that are higher on the hog chickin. ;D
You can have everything below the knees ;D.
There will be no chickin knees, fingers, or nuggets at the Crispin.

Just the good parts. food6
i think grits are below their knees, except maybe when there scwating. :)
That is a low blow below the knees for the poor grits. They are just trying to be good corn :-\.
I've eat Grits above the knees and below the knees. There good! :)

Y'all don't get Southern cooking channels up north? Call your local cable or satellite provider and ask them if they can tune you into WGRIT. Y'ALLLLL might learn how to fix Grits. :D

A Mickey D's in Wisconsin? :o :o :o
As much as I hate to, I am going to have to back out. I was really looking forward to meeting all in attendance. When I initially replied I had a feeling in the very back of my mind that Sept. 28 was spoken for. It was, but I neglected to put it on my calendar. Me and 6 other folks will be presenting "The Cotton Patch Gospel" at Good News United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa, Florida on that day.
I'll be thinking of y'all as I'm driving to Florida!

No grits at our Micky D's up here in Maine either. On occasion you can get lobster rolls. Personally, the chances of me ordering a lobster roll from McDonalds here are about the same as ordering grits when I'm down south...ZERO!
Have fun at the crispin, y'all! ;D

We are trying to get this event promoted as soon as possible so folks can work out their schedules and we will miss meeting/seeing any of you that can not attend. We now have 10 members confirmed, so I expect 20 or more.
We will begin Friday evening with a grillin' for those that are staying with us or close enough to attend. We will have breakfast Saturday morning, and then look forward to the Chickin & Fixin's for lunch.
Nearby Port Gibson, Natchez and Vicksburg are rich in history and Antebellum homes.
Here some driving distances/directions: (the pin on the profile map shows the correct location)
From Hazlehurst: Take Hwy 28 toward Fayette. From Brookhaven: Take Hwy 550. In either case, from the intersection of Hwy 550 and Hwy 28 in Union Church, drive West 8 miles on Hwy 28 and turn right onto Dennis Crossroads (Bethesda Baptist Church)
Drive 10.5 miles on Dennis Crossroads (it becomes Hwy. 552) to the Red Brick Church on the right. Turn right onto Woodvine Rd. and proceed 3.2 miles to The Davis Vineyard on the left.
From Lorman: Take Hwy 552 and travel East approximately 4 miles to the Red Brick Church on the left. Turn left onto Woodvine Rd. and proceed 3.2 miles to The Davis Vineyard on the left.
From Port Gibson: Take Hwy 61S. From the Natchez Trace Parkway entrance, drive 3.5 miles to Russum. Turn Left onto Woodvine Rd. (Charles Donald Timber) and proceed 4 miles to The Davis Vineyard on the right.
We do have some sleeping arrangements available so let me know as soon as possible.
MM, can i bring anything to help out? bg
Bill, Cold "dranks" like you did before would be wonderful. smiley_thumbsup
Is there room for a Hitch-Hiker at the cabin? If there is will it require a man in a suit on the roof? We just don't know yet if we will make it but we haven't dismissed the idea.
Will do MM. bg

Gary, Plenty of room. We can level it up and I have a 30 amp RV receptacle just for you. :)
Gary, the gate is a bit of a tight squeeze, but I been through it in a 36 ft diesel pusher. Once through the gate, Magic has plenty of room for a whole caravan.
Lynn, we will also bring a cooler of drinks, and I think I can talk the Mrs into making some of that blueberry crunch....
My question about a man in a suit comes from last year while parking at MM's home place I tried to go under a wire that was a few inches too low :o I stopped before a catastrophe occurred and waited until MM got home from church whereupon he went up on the roof in his Church Duds and rescued me, a first and only to have a man in a suit on my roof. A regular hero!
Quote from: pineywoods on August 19, 2013, 10:48:11 PMGary, the gate is a bit of a tight squeeze,
It looks smaller than it is. The gate is 10' and log trucks have been through it.

Gotta work Friday and Saturday, there's a chance I can make the Chikin on Saturday.
Hopefully so James. We will save a leg for you.
OK folks, we are exactly one month away.
We do still have some overnight arrangements for anyone that speaks up. Also Pat found a B&B in Port Gibson. Isabella B&B (http://www.natcheztracetravel.com/portgibson-bedandbreakfasts/isabella.html) is a little pricy at ~$120 per night but it looks nice.
Lindy and I are going to plan on being there if nothing changes.

About the same timing as the Pig Roast. I'll get home from work Wednesday evening, rest Thursday, and we will drive down Friday. Not nearly as far to drive this time. Still the same journey to get home from work though.
The Hors d'oeuvres will be "Smoked Louisiana Boudin". smiley_gossip food6
Man-O-man... you are KILLIN' me! You WILL be having another crispin' next year? I accepted the music gig (it's actually a minstry thing, we are volunteering) way back in July. How could I have ever known? I'll be thinking about y'all have such great food and fellowship!

I only tried boiled peanuts once and didn't care for them but they had been frozen for a while after boiling so I'm not sure it was a fair trial.
The Chickin Crispin date is the 28th, three weeks from tomorrow. 8)
Not counting my entire family, my list has 15 folks.
Pinenut, wwsjr, pineywoods & wife, Bill Gaiche & wife, TwoTired & wife, LeeB & wife, LeroyC & wife, and Sixacresand & wife, Fishpharmer, gspren & wife.
Make your plans and let me know so Pat will know how many chickens to kill. :)
Kay and I are planning to be there but not sure exactly what day we will arrive. Naturally if you allow a hurricane in the area to chase us north we may miss it. We will head east from CA on the 8th so it should be no problem if the weather cooperates. Is the entire shindig taking place at your cabin?
You folks headed to Magic's for the chickin crispin....If my place is anywhere close to your route, the welcome mat is always out. Plenty of space for rv's. Hole in the wall place just up the road makes the best barbque in the south. I'm about 3 hours from Magic's place, we will be driving over saturday morning.
I encourage anyone who can, go. Lynn and Pat are super hosts and the facility
will have you drooling...
I was glad to add your names to the list Gary. That makes 17 so far and still counting. We need some carpooling from Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and..............
Pat and I spent Friday & today getting ready. After I finish my sawing job next week, I am headed back over.
I will re-post driving directions and GPS info soon so everyone can find us.
I'll be clearing roads/trails and bushhogging for the rest of the week. The only work planned will be motorized field trips. :)
The weather is supposed to break this weekend. You might hit it right.
Stihl and I cleared the roads and trails yesterday. I had a minor bushhog breakdown this AM, but now have that fixed and am headed back to the Cabin. Cost me 2½ hours and a 90 mile round trip. :-\
The good thing is that Pat can go back with me. :)
Just caught this thread and thought great, I'm going to be down for work staying in Meridian for close to a month.....except for the weekend of the 28th.......bummer. A fellow from Mississippi that is delivering some equipment for the install warned me to watchout for the "lovebugs" whatever they are......sounds like they get together in big swarms.
At least the weekend I get back home has a forestry field day that same weekend too with a local chapter of WWOA. Betcha the food up here will not be even close though. Wish I could make it..... :(
I am getting some PM's for driving and GPS info, so I will give an update. The GPS address is different from the actual, but it is what will get you there:
2329 Woodvine Rd. Lorman, Mississippi. 39096

We had a couple of good working days getting stuff ready for the 28th.
Note that an RSVP is not necessary to attend. It was only to give us a general idea of how many to expect. We now have 18 attending. :)
Wish I was closer and days were longer. . . .
Just saw this... I'm gonna try n make it up there too 8)
Wonderful Shaggy. We will be anxious to meet another face.

I'm going to try to make it. The wife has to work, but maybe I can drag my son with me.
The wife and I pulled in to Magic's at about 3:30 today with our camper and although the gate was plenty wide it could stand to be a foot higher! I ended up with MM on the roof swinging the sign up while my AC unit went under, no problem. Lynn & Pat were both hard at work and they have a nice place here. Looking forward to meeting some new people tomorrow and Saturday.

Just arrived at hotel in Vicksburg. Be glad to meet everyone in the morning.
We made it about 4:30 to the Davis Farm. Done some visiting, had a burger supplied by Pat and MM and headed to Hotel in Brookhaven. Took photo of Copper head a couple of miles from the farm at the edge of the road. I think he smelled the burgers. Cant post photo cause I forgot USB cable at this time. bg
Guess I'm not going to make it after all. Didn't make it back from overseas until late. Just too beat to make it. Maybe next time. :(
SORRY I DIDN'T MAKE IT YA'LL, Long story, but short version is brother (in NAVY) is getting transferred to Italy and will probably never be back in the states (close to his 25 yrs in service) so we had to visit them.... (his wife is from Italy)
Hope to come next year or just come one weekend n visit.... God bless ya'll (and especially our troops) :rifle: air_plane tank-smiley
Just got home from the chickin crispin..super good time, Lynn and Pat have to be the nicest hosts anybody could find. Magicman swore to flatly deny anything that don't have pics to back it up, so I guess my lips are sealed ;) To those that planned to come and couldn't I'll just say it was our loss as well as yours, maybe next time...
Just got back to Vicksburg Super 8 via Natchez MS, Vidalia and Tallulla, LA and El Sombrero. Got some nice pictures to backup what Pineywoods said below. We definitely had a good time. Took notes so maybe I can put names with the pics that I will post shortly. Lynn and Pat were great hosts.
We have made it to Monroe, La so far. Went down thru Natchez first. Met some great folks today , had some great food with a little tour thru the woods. Thanks Pat and Lynn for the great get together. bg

TwoTired brought something called boodan. It was very good and most likely would be even better with Grits. (I don't have an official spelling for Boodan)
boudin, surprised you Georgia boys aren't familiar with it, WDH sure is. Boudin, cold beer, and shrimp, you got yourself a Gulf (Louisiana/Texas) party. Some folks would through in boiled corn and 'tators, but that just fills ya up.
Looked up boudin and the sausage looked so good I went to the freezer and pulled out a ring of venison bologna (baloney). Made me hungry.
As much as I like making my own sausage, I really need to try my hand at boudin. I really like boudin. Another reason I'm sorry I didn't make it down.

Bill - I hope you didn't offer a ride to that copperhead. :D
I noticed not many photos were taken during the eating part. I know I was busy with chicken, boudan and fixings.
At precisely 6:00PM on the 27th I was thinking about y'all while I was singing and playing "Somethin's Brewin' in Gainsville", the opening number of the play "The Cotton Patch Gospel". We were playing at Good News United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa, Florida. No, I don't have pics to prove it, kinda hard to work the camera with a guitar in my hands and a microphone in front of my mouth! I'm sure I would have had at least as good of a time with y'all and I'm disappointed that I couldn't make it. Can't wait for the next opportunity to meet some of y'all! Looks like I missed a great time!
gr
Seems there would be a video of that guitar playing. In lieu of pics, videos are good too. ;) :snowball:
Beenthere, you would think that after more than 20 performances over the last 4 years that someone WOULD have a video! I was disappointed to hear that the pastor of the chuch (he played Jesus in the one-man play) told me that there was no video recording of either of the two shows we did...

With your success at preparing the chicken this year, Lynn, you just might have to think about changing the name of your gathering. It certainly looked like a great and well attended event.

And the "nanner puddin" was some of the best I've ever had. I ate your share too, David. food1
I only had 2 helpings of the pudding. It WAS good.
That "HitchHiker" should finally get home tomorrow after a tour of the country. We left home the end of July and the first main stop was the Pigroast, we then crossed the country all the way to California then headed back east with our last big event the Chickin Crispin, I certainly didn't lose any weight on this trip. The hosts at both events were great and we saw some beautiful scenery in between but now it's time to get home and see if my chainsaws, tractors, ATV, etc. are ready to run. Thanks to everyone we met for making a good trip better.
Thanks for the Pic's now we know it happened! I salute all the little chickens who gave thier little lives to make it a great crispen. :D :D :D Lazerdan :D
We tried to give everyone a tour of the Tree Farm as well as my leased land. I did not find any pictures, but we saw my old dying Champion Red Oak, Pine as well as the Oak plantations. On one tour Gary (gspren) spotted this:

A very nice 8 point skull. There was no nearby carcass, so I guess that a dog or coyote dropped it beside the trail.
Looks like things went well for u-all :D Good for you :)
We made it home from the Crispin. This morning we even had grits for breakfast in VA, probably won't see any more of them for awhile, I hope.
Glad to hear that you are safely at home. We really enjoyed your visit and look forward to next time, whenever and wherever that might be. :)
