Hickory nuts for smokers?

  Today at the VFW a guy told me he picks up the green hickory nuts when they fall and freezes them in a zip lock, pulls a few out and throws them on the coals to get smoke, anyone else do this? He told me this while sitting at the bar and drinking a beer so it must be true! At our new house there is a hickory that drops nuts on the driveway.
