Title: wood cracking & splitting

A friend of mine makes counter tops & bartops & ships them from Texas to the East Coast.  They are at 6-8% moisture when shipped, but apparently they take on moisture in their new locations & cracks appear.

I would appreciate any advice that may be of help to him in delaing with this problem.

I'd first be curious (and a bit suspicious) as to how the 6-8% moisture is being measured. It sounds like they are drying out (because of additional cracking) in place, not picking up moisture as is now suspected.

Can you fill us in with some more details?  
Species, thickness, drying procedure, etc. ??

that sounds like the reverse.. drying out further instead of picking up moisture..I would suspect its not 6-8% moisture..

Yep, I concur,  I bet when he checks moisture content he is only checking the surface.

Ya had to know that was coming!Sorry!
I have a question.
Well a few as a matter of fact.
1.What speices is the wood?
2.Are the tops one big piece or smaller pieces gluded together?
3.How is the wood dried?

It does sound as if moisture may be your problem but it not be your only problem.
Please give us some more details.
[I promise I wont do the Dr.J thing anymore! ;D]
