Of a 12-1/2 cord pile of dry aspen and fir/spruce, I've got 3-1/2 cord left and still burning. Mighty cold sitting around at 30-50 degrees. Sure I can use the electric furnace, but the wood is there, no reason not to burn it and save some $100 bills is there? Ask me again when I'm 80, I'll probably be reaching for the electric button.  :D

I ain't as young as I use to be ! It takes me longer to get wood in than it used to. Jackie would just as soon I quit messing with it, I tell her it keeps me young  then she asks me why I have the Advill bottle in my hand? 😅
Together we got this !

My firewood has a dual purpose, I've got a lot of ground to thin, the second time. Not just what's close to the road, but all them acres way back to. Better then letting it all rot, because pulpwood price isn't even worth getting out of bed for. ;D

I have to admit I did use the radiant ceiling heat and the new  propane furnace once I got it working correctly .Which is another story .
It's just the fact I have an abundance of fire wood all within 5-600 feet of the house .However at 74 years of age I'm not nearly as spry nor enthusiastic about it as I once was .
Not so many years ago I'd get two cords a day, cut split and stacked .Now of days it's more like a half a cord .Factor in I rebuild  ,restore chainsaws so I have to have a means of testing them rather than turn them all into shelf queens .

I'm with you Al. Burning wood and the saw hobby are two mutually supporting activities. I need to be able to do something useful with the saws or there's no point in getting them running. And I enjoy doing firewood while "playing" with the saws. But like you and breederman, there's no more all day on the wood pile anymore. The enjoyment is still there, just need to take it in smaller bites.

I've got a tree trimmer bud that hauled in enough oak 10 years ago to keep me going for a long while .The idea was he was going to chunk it up and sell it but that didn't happen .It's mostly  white oak that will last almost fore ever until it rots up .I've been plugging away at it for several years a few cords a year in addition to my own stuff I seem to have standing dead and down all over the place .This old dead stuff I get plenty of chances to practice filing the chain which I'm pretty good at BTW .

Al_Smith

Downed white oak and ash will last a long time before it's useless .Cherry ,hickory ,maple, red oak  are not as rot proof .For those standing dead is most likely a better option but they will go over in time .So depending if those won't present a hazard I let them stand but if not over they go . The wind is the biggest factor .Mother nature often can lay them right on the stake but often miss by a mile .So that needs to be factored .

By June, I bet 10 cords will have burned. :D I'll need to cut closer to 2 cord this spring to finish the piles, by the time I shut the stove off. A little more than I thought earlier. I have storage for 10 cords here. But If I want to cut 30 cords for 3 years, I could put 20 in the barn. But I have a paying job, and like father said I can't work 24/7 and get paid for 1/3 of the time. :D

Well I worked for others for 50 years before I retired .I'm my own boss now and can do as I please of course within the bounds of that blonde haired one time HS cheerleader I now abide with .She can't do cart wheels any more and it's been decades since I've hit home runs . :)

Here in the Northeast it looks like April is going to finish up with 4-5 nights down to the freezing mark. Not quite done yet, are we? :)

Just this morning I made a fire in our furnace. I think it was the last one of the season but then with this spring it seems one just does not know.

Regardless we are at about 3 cords of wood here at 29° N.
Woodmizer lt40G28.  A kubota L4600 with loader and forks.
Various Stihl saws and not enough time to use them!
Finished my house finally. Completely sawn out on by band mill. It took me 7 years but was worth it. Hardest thing I have ever done.

Just lit a fire for tonight
Might get around freezing tonight and tomorrow night

I hear ya man, rainy damp chilly weekend and I would have started an evening fire in the house stove, but the show season started and all my my craft show stuff is packed up in front of the stove. >:( SO I just put a sweatshirt on in the evening.
Out in the shop I have been making a fire every morning to warm it a bit and keep the air dry as I am applying some finishes and need it to dry. It's been 57-59° when I get out there in the morning. I don't stuff the stove for overnight and I am burning mostly the junk I want to get rid of anyway and scraps off the shop saws. Win-win.

Same here Tom. Got down to 44° the last two nights. Cold enough for a "kill the chill" fire, but no need for an all nighter. Also burning chunks and scrap. I need to wander over and check out your shop sometime. Never been there, but don't think I'll need that "temporary" sign we were talking about the other day. LOL

Have you seen that heating oil around here is $6 a gallon? I know coming out of the burning season, nobody wants to think about that yet. But this will set the stage for quite a firewood year.

Yeah, I have seen the prices. Makes me sick to my stomach an we are just about out. I should get going on my wood, yeah, next year will be rough.
You're welcome here anytime, just give me a heads up to make sure I am here. With better weather I am out and about more trying to make fuel money.
