Log ID with solid black streak
« on: May 31, 2022, 04:15:57 PM »
I recently milled this log from a wooded site near Claytor Lake in Virginia.  It was already in the log pile so I don't have any leaves to reference.  The solid black streak really has me puzzled.  The black that you see covering the bottom portion of the slab in the 1st picture is just dirt where the slab had been drugged along the ground.  I've seen black streaks in poplar in my area, but it is always accompanied by yellow and green streaks.  Any idea on the species?

Any coal near the surface there?

Interesting find.

I believe you have a funky black gum there.

No coal that I know of.  I cut several cherry logs from the same site and they all looked completely normal.

Just saw a picture identical to yours. It was in Woodwork magazine and the the photo was from Drew Langsner's shop in North Carolina. Identified as poplar and was being carved for bread bowls.

Looks like a Red to me also. That black streak appears to be early stages of fungal growth. In a few more growing years that tree would likely be hollow.
