I've got a 2 year old stihl 310 with a 24 inch bar, it was the biggest I could afford at the time. I'd like to squeeze a bit more performance from the saw and can't find much info on good ol' google. Probably because I'm not sure what to look under.
Thanks in advance.
The best bang for your buck would be to modify the muffler and readjust the carb. Search threads for muffler mods or open your muffler outlet(s) to between 80 and 100% of the cylinder exhaust port. Also port match the exhaust gasket and muffler inlet.
Start on the smaller side because it can be tough to put metal back and consider how the new or larger ports will redirect the exhaust flow, will it bounce back and burn your fingers in a long cut or will it melt any plastic?

I don't think it would hurt anything as long as it doesn't redirect the exhaust straight up.
Don't get carried away. The 310 is a consumer saw and does not have the bottom end to withstand heavy modding and the resulting high rpm's.
Sawguy is right. Don't get carried away. The 310 does a pretty good job out of the box. Do you need the 24 inch bar? That saw would be at its best with an 18-20 inch judging by the few that have come though my shop.
I use the 24 inch bar often, I bought it 2 years ago and I'm outgrowing it fast.
I would suggest a larger saw if you need the 24". I use the analogy of a 35' fifth wheel travel trailer with all the bells and whistles being pulled by a six cylinder half ton. It will hook up, the truck will pull it but is it going to be adequate. Go to a MS390 or better yet a MS440 if the budget will allow. Are you running 3/8 chain as I have not seen .325 on a bar longer than 20"
aye 3/8 chain, I'm looking at some used saws now. A neighbor has a older model 066 I'd like to buy or trade for.
