Title: Need help with ID...hickory??

hi everyone-

Just collected these, all pics from same tree. Second pic diameter is 12". My guess is some type of hickory, maybe bitternut? It's very heavy and was growing in an area with several shagbarks. Any help would be appreciated.

Certainly hickory and sure looks like Bitternut.

I agree with Mr. Stavebuyer.  Certainly hickory. If bitternut, the buds will be sulfur yellow.

Shellbark has a browner heartwood. I do better with nuts and leaves on most hickories.
My larger problem with them is the few big nut hickories we have the squirrels beat us to the nuts. Cookies made with hickory nuts are the best known flavor. I have a cracker that handles them easily-if i had any nuts.
