Post by: Bruno of NH on November 19, 2017, 11:22:14 AM
If I can find a place would there be any interest in having a FF/sawyer pot luck dinner ?
Looking to see who would come
Thanks Bruno

This would be open to any member that wanted to come.
I'm thinking about this because i don't think i will ever make the pig roast or the southern project because of my blood clot issue.
If folks didn't mind i would invite some other folks in the wood business not members of the FF
Thanks Bruno

I stoped in to see Peter today and we talked about the pot luck get together.
Peter is going to host it at his sawmill we would saw some logs and have some food.
Talk sawmill and meet people .
We need to come up with a date.
I'm thinking spring at the earliest so we could have some nice weather and folks wouldn't have to travel in bad weather.
Any ideas or thoughts please let us know.
I would also like to come up with some door prizes any thoughts on that ?

Personally I'd like it to be when the campgrounds are open.  Are there any close by?
I also would like to see a red oak log RRQS demonstration.
Note: I promise not to bring any ground corn.

WDH,come on up. It's not that cold at that time of year. Quite often it will be in the mid 40's by high noon. Bring your boots. Don't want you to get your feet wet from the melting of the glacial ice.

Gents if the younger crew is allowed (actually I hit the 40 in October) I can make the trip up. Mom lives in Chester VT so I can make the day trip or use the truck tent , always need an excuse to pop that up.  If  MM can't make it I may use some air miles to fly him out, my friends who I share the forum to think he is not real, and simply something we sawyers aspire to reach full enlightenment :)

according to google maps is 6 hours and 48 minute drive for me. Pretty much due east. I would be willing to share a ride.

Usually I would not feel bad about out and back but I am sure good ppl is going to make me want to stay and that could be a very long day. So overnight may make more sense.

I just saw this thread, and I put the date on the calendar. Be good to put a face to some of the members on the Forum.
Engineer, are you going alone or with family? I'll probably be going alone, since I'll be dragging mother to the EXPO the weekend before!!!! You're welcome to ride along; there'll be safety in numbers when we get over the Connecticut River.

I marked it on my calendar. That looks like a weekend I should be able to make. I'll likely bring something cold unless I come with a way to reheat something there, Driving time according to the directions on Peter Drouin's web site show 5 hrs 18 min. Then at my age there's 2 or 3 pit stops.

To save people from scrolling back through pages of posts to find the date and location:

This is on May 19, 2018 at Peter Drouin's place in Sanbornton, NH. See his website for directions: http://forestryforum.com/sanbornton/ (http://forestryforum.com/sanbornton/)

This is about 25 minutes north of Concord, NH, not far from exit 22 off I-93.

If you are looking for other things to do while in the area, this is not far from Lake Winnepesaukee: lots of things to see and do around there and some nice little towns in the area (my sister used to live year round on an island in Lake Winnepesaukee).

Can anyone recommend a good campground in the area? It would be fun if we could all stay at the same place. Maybe we could cook a group breakfast and debate the merits of Vermont vs New Hampshire Maple syrup on our pancakes.

Or we could get you some from Michigan so there would be no debate at all. Don't let Don Staples see this post, or he will try to tell you Texas syrup is the best, and everyone knows, there is ony Two kinds of syrup in Texas...

To end any speculation. I've promised to try and make a trip east this year, but it will be for the Logrite open house in April if I can swing that. The last part of May we are committed to getting ready for the Coleman Veterans Memorial Concert which is supported in part by The Forestry Forum. (we take care of all their internet and web needs and volunteer where they need us. In exchange, the Forum gets promoted at the concerts.)

Ya'll have a good time and make the Forestry Forum proud.

My good luck continues  :(
Cut my left hand in the shop yesterday taking bark of a slab.
Cut a small artery blood everywhere

Don't look like it's holding to good.

I then ran for some paper towels in stuck them in the hole.

The worst part blood got all over the project I was working on.
I've heard of signing your work, but I did not think it was supposed to be in blood!
You have approx. 2 months to recuperate.

Now that I'm having surgery for kidney cancer just a month before that, I'll need to see how well I'm doing. A long drive may not be very good at that time, if I miss it, maybe this can be an annual (or semi annual) event, and I could make the next one. If all goes well, I still might be able to come.

On the food thing, Bruno and I have to talk about it some, I think with only 20 or 30 people coming, maybe 40 Bruno and I can cover it.
With hamburgers and hot dogs, potato salad, some green salads and cold drinks, water,
I don't know when we get closer we can get a better headcount. This is Brunos and my first time doing this. When we get closer Ross from Wood Mizer will let us know if he can make it with some new equipment he has.
In another place here Bruno asked If we can get a speaker here on drying lumber. And it was said that would cost $$$$ to get one here.
I think Bruno and I are open to ideas too.  :D :D
Maybe I can get the group to tail the mill, use the edger and we can get 10,000
BF cut and sticked,  :D  :D  :D

Maybe just best to take a poll to see what everybody wants to do. I have no experience around a mill. I'd be happy with some theory about setting up a mill, and why and how of some different cuts. I wouldn't want to suggest that. There'll be too many people who know all that already. I kind of think I remember somebody back near the start of the post talking about RRQS. I'd like to see some of that

Couple of questions
Are many wives expected to attend?
If not how is the supply of antiques/craft fairs/flea markets in your area.
My good wife likes to travel with me and if there are enough to keep her busy she may tag along.
Also motels near by?

When I get a pig it's walking, I like to do it all from the start. Know what you have that way.
I would like this thing to be about wood, logging, sawing, drying,  Eating would be a small but fun part of it. Won't be cooking 200 hamburgers. :D :D :D

Jeff your at it for 3 days, from start to finish.

Looking for raffle things
I'm bringing a wood working project
If some one wins it that doesn't want it they can pass it on to someone else.
I don't know about Peter but I would like it to happen every year.
I think us New England folks have a lot to offer each other in milling, logging, firewood, wood products sales and contacts in equipment sales rather it be mills, edgers, planers, kilns and tractors/equipment.
Thanks Jim

If you don't want to spend any money on name tags we can just use a roll of masking tape and a sharpie to make them as people arrive.
At the last event I went to we used a roll of blue painters tape. It worked.

Looks as though I will not be able to make it. My daughter is playing in her last basketball tournament for the year. I've missed too much of her season already, so I'm planning on attending this tournament.

I'll offer up a ride share if anybody's coming through western CT. I'm leaving Friday morning and staying at the Silver Lake Park Campground. You'd have to be willing to put up with a stop at Logrite to pick up a piece for @PAmizerman (http://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=profile;u=37229)

Getting the place picked up so no one will fall and break a hip. :D
Think I will use saw horses with 1x12x10' pine boards for tables.
I have some folding chairs, Maybe some 20" tall buttons with a 2x10 on top for a seat.

Thinking a 2'x4' box made with 1x12 set on/in sawdust and lined with plastic for a cooler filled with ice.

After spending the last five months hoping I could make it, I am going to have to put my name in the "not attending" category.  My schedule is a train wreck, and it's not improving.  I don't have a free weekend until sometime in late August.

Hopefully next year there'll be another one and maybe I can go.  Still haven't gotten out to MI for the pig roast either, it's on my "bucket list".

As much as I feel I should remain home and get the spring veggies put in I will attend.
Wife will be making beans for me to bring. Being able to plug in the crock pot would be good.

Bruno can you once again post the location and time info so we have it at the end of the thread?

And I ain't drankin that Purple stuff either!

I'm going to put balloons up at the end of my road. Might help, I'm less than a mile from I93. You can call my cell If someone gets lost 603, 455, 0606.
Getting off I93 going south ex 22 left at stop sign, first left. Burleigh Hill.
¼ mile on the left.

Going north on I93 ex 22 go right at stop sign ¼ mile first left.
When you get in the yard, drive out past the greenhouse and you will find the mill and me. :D

I do have one or two customers will stop to pick up some lumber orders.
If some want to bring Ice, we can use some.
With no power out at the mill yet, It will make it a little hard. I'm going to have hot coffee out there, I just have to run back to the house to get more.

Ann said it was going to be rainy and buggy and if the ladies would like to come to the sunroom and read or knit or whatever. they are welcome. She will be weaving.

She doesn't like buggy. ;)

All I can say is thank God I made it to Massachusetts in one piece.

My parents and brother rode along with me and we are staying with very good friends.

It took us 16 hours :o

I had a tractor trailer run me off the road and into a group of trees. Very long story.
I'm just happy to be alive.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you tomorrow. Hopefully the two hour trip up will go smoother than yesterday's.

Just wanted to thank Peter and Bruno for the time and energy they put into the Northern Project. It was great to meet and get to talk with all who were there and have many of my questions answered. The knowledge gained from you all has helped me take another step closer to purchasing a mill. A great group to hang out with.

Well, I think a good time was had by all.

The first demo was held in the morning. Peter picked out a log with a sweep in it. They then scaled the pine log and deducted bdft for the sweep. Then he sawed it out, pictures posted above by Bruno of NH. He edged all the boards and then tallied all the lumber to see how close we came out to getting the right number of bdft. Or to see how much we lost.
The log tally deducting for the sweep came out to 95 bdft (international scale). The lumber tally came out of over 120 bdft. So he didn't loose any due to sweep.

One FF member present had to leave early so we did a group shot just about lunchtime.

Here is a close up of the FF members there:

And here is the list of names:
Back row left to right, Peter Drouin our host, nilpuk, GAB, 51cub (in red shirt), loganworks2, oliver0562, shinnlinger, 78NHTFY,  4x4American holding his door prize he won.
On the log from left to right PAmizerman's father (didn't get his screen name), Crusarius, PAmizerman, Petefrombearswamp, Bruno of NH
Not pictures was hersnsh#590 and his wife. Also Jim Rogers who was taking the picture.
(if I got any screen names wrong please let me know).

After lunch Peter did a demo of sawing out an oak log to try and get as much "flake" as possible.

Here he is leveling the pith:

And thanks to Bruno's wife for helping with the cooking of hot dogs and cheese burgers.
And thanks to Ann Peter's wife for all her help.

I made it all the way home 6 1/2 hrs arriving at 9:35 or so.
Pretty tiring for this senior citizen.
I forgot how frustrating driving on other that interstates can be in New England.
got behind a line of cars and a school bus going up mountains on Vermont 9 at 30 MPH for what seemed like an eternity.
On to the pig roast in August!!
Took some video of the quarter sawing on my phone but haven't a clue how to post it.

It was fun, Thank's to all who came.
We did get a lot of flake from that Red Oak.
If I was in the finish hardwood market, I would cut it all that way. [reverse role] with big logs. The Oak I used I think was 18" top end, and not quite big enuff for that kind of cutting.
But, watch out for the backstops, All most hit one.  Thank's Yellowhammer.
Gab was a big help having watched it in person at customersawer's.
Good food Bruno. smiley_thumbsup

Bruno & Peter:
Thanks for hosting and everything else.
I enjoyed meeting other members of the forum and their guests.

As far as purple drank is concerned at exit 20 off of I-93 there was a Wal-Mart and I'm pretty sure they
had grape kool-aid available and I could of brought a bottle (I think it is a quart) of 190 proof grain alcohol.
Personally I do not think contributing to someone getting drunk and losing their senses is the right thing to do.

What a great bunch of FF members and just a terrific time!!  Peter & Bruno were the perfect hosts for this 1st of the Northern Project get-togethers--thanks so much to them and their spouses for their efforts.  Some serious sawing/demos and we all learned something (big cheers when that oak ray-fleck showed up!!); and lots of laughs and stories--the day went by too fast.  Even the forecasted rainy weather held off until later in the day!  Already looking forward to the next one.  Hope everyone made it home safely.  All the best, Rob

After taking 9 through VT to get to NH on friday I chose to take a different route on the way home. So I drove through Killington. Much nicer drive. I did notice the closer to home I got the dumber the drivers get.

I think I need to make a trip back up there and go hike Quechee Gorge. When I drove over it, it looked amazing.

Definitely a great way to spend a weekend. I would do it again without a second thought. Thanx to everyone for making it worth the trip.

The journey is half the fun. I have seen some pretty amazing things doing that. Plus I rarely travel the same route twice.

You have to take into account that the estimated time is based on being able to maintain the speed limit the entire way.  The GPS or computer does not take into account farm tractors on the road, pit stops, Sunday drivers, ETC.
Glad you made it both ways.

it does however take into account the parking lot on I-90 on the way home. Was pretty accurate if I actually stuck to the route. But I like to make it up as I go. If I always followed the GPS I would never see anything.

Peter, I'd like to thank you again for hosting us on Saturday. My wife and I had a great time, and will do it again whenever the next time comes. I think she got more interested in the milling than she expected to, and had a good time. We took the scenic route on the way home. I owed her for letting me come, so we went to L.L.Bean in Concord on the way home; but then I drug her up to my aunt's old place in Warner to see how time has changed it (not really for the better). My aunt passed away in '66, and my mother sold the house to the neighbors that year.
Thanks, again. Hope to see you again.

I also had a GPS error a few years ago, in fact 2. On one I entered my destination and it took me to a dead end, it seems a bridge had washed out about 30 years earlier but the GPS sent me that way.
In another case, I have a sugarhouse and about 6 years ago I kept getting calls that people could not find me during an open house event. Turned out the Google maps put my sugarhouse 4 miles west , but on the same road, in a different village. I notified Google maps and over the next year I notified them about 8-10 more times, finally about 14 months later I got a call from Google and they corrected it.
I sure wish I could have attended, maybe next year!

I forget who I was talking to about the exhaust mod I made on my predator, I think it was Bruno. Here are the pics. It was a 1.5" diameter pipe. it slid over the outlet on the muffler perfectly. I chose not to try to clamp it cause it was such a nice fit instead I added the support tab that should work perfectly. I did cut the excess off before the bend just to keep it closer to the muffler. Now the exhaust will not blow in my face, is not much taller than it was and is not a rain catch. I did put the flame arrestor back on it to keep critters out.

I thought I had some high temp black paint but unfortunately I did not so it is going to stay grey till I have a need to get some more high temp paint.

It is Summit part number
