I was out helping OldSaw cut with his new Chainsaw mill
and i started to think, bad when your mind starts to do that.
I know ban mill guys look at a log to see where to make the
first cut but should a chainsaw mill do the same. I was
looking at some of OldSaw logs and could see that some
there was only one way to start. I do know that i am out of
shape for that type of milling. Most of his logs are down
in a creek bed and steep banks to git there. Wow does that
saw  weight. I hope OldSaw son got some pictures so
 he can post a few.

There is always a thousand ways to open a log and different reasons to choose one over an other.  For grade lumber you try to put the knots on the edge of the boards.  In softwoods and in framing stock you try to center knots in the board if possible.    When cutting thick slabs I try to put the knots on the edge of the slab so that it makes a good natural edge.  With "Big & Uglys" you just saw them any way you can get a hold of them.
Photos would be nice so we can see what a body will go through to get a stick of wood. ::)
