My wife finally brought home some fresh squid today. 6$ a pound! When I fished I used right at 1 ton a week for bait fresh off the purse seiners and it cost me a bottle JD....I iced/salted this magnificent creature and used it for bait to catch  deep water rockfish.In the 80-90's I was a real player with significant numbers .I miss my fishing life sometimes...

That's some good catching.  Deep,water, eye popping swim balder blowing fishing.  The squid looks good.

250 - 300  fathoms , 75-100 miles off shore, delivered with beating hearts every week to downtown Los Angeles. Very good fish- mostly 40-75 years old. Raw izumi die Japanese market and the rest to fresh Chinese consumers.
  Squid was once very cheap, delicious seafood-it is still delicious but times have changed, >:(

   That's hitting below the belt! I love calamari and have not had any in years. When I was working a project in southern Norway there was an oriental market there where I would get frozen cuttlefish. I'd cut them crosswise into rings, dip them in tempura batter and deep fry them in a cast iron wok I had found there. I ate them with a Thai Sweetened chili sauce that was sweet and spicy. Boy were they good. I've got to go get a bib now as you have me drooling on myself. digin_2

We eat them sauted, chilled and tossed in a salad, and even dried Korean style.I would take squid over lobster.I'm trying something new tonight , so I will need to trot along right now............ 8)

 8) I have yet to try a seafood I don't like. Properly prepared calamari is a real delicacy, not done right it is like shoe leather.

Rain and snow flurries at noon today so I'm cooking EARLY. Pig feet  to be braised in chicken broth , garlic , shallots, parsley roots, wine, spices.Baby collards, black carrots, and a BBQ chicken because the wife and grand daughter won't eat feet...... :D

Conch and welk used to be cheap and plentiful also. no more. i'll trade you three pounds of squid for a pound of cracked conch. Better still, let's sit down to a calamari, fried conch, and clam dinner.Mmmmm...

And the results-delicious to say the least.Out west our snails and clams are different but also good and I will hold you to your dinner suggestion. Good food is where you find it. Cheers !

   I cry foul and devious trickery and deceit on the pigs feet being added to a food thread about squid. That is about the worst case of bait and switch I have seen in a long time. For shame, for shame! I hope you are appropriately and duly contrite for your misdeeds! :D

One more for the strong stomach folks is a squid pronounced She-un kara.  Shiokara - Wikipedia This is Japanese dish, hard to find, obscure, STRONG, slimy, and to me very good. You take a 1 pound neon flying squid (big) remove all the digestive tract, skin, and dice the mantle into little pieces. Mix the guts with the diced meat and cover under refrigeration for a week. Remove and salt HEAVILY to stop the biological self digestion and serve in small bowels with chop sticks . Soft long, strings of slime reek of fish on steroids- it is a lot like eating the foulest of cheeses. For the next snot strings I will prepare Natto in another post soon.... ;D

Most of the time my squid reaches that stage of its "life" I end up having to pressure wash it off the side of my boat because I was using it for bait the day before.

Haven't to the best of my knowledge been fed horse meat although some places I have dined at have been pretty sketchy. :D Pigs feet are quite tasty as is squid but both need to be properly prepared.

Well, there's your problem. Go to a good Italian or seafood place and call it "calamari".

Natto is a fermented soybean. Note the threads of bacteria.  Very strong smelling- again like a cheese. An acquired taste--------.

Wow you eat some strange stuff. I would struggle mightily to eat soybeans like that.  I smell enough spilled soybeans around farms after they get rained on during harvest.... no good. I am also out on the feet it's kind of  a job thing.  Although you might not care for my oysters. ;)

   I love them fried but a raw one is a waste of a good fried oyster. And I am severely disillusioned about how badly Tule Peak has abused these squid on this thread. >:(

The only thing I miss about squid is hanging them on a hook and snagging a big grouper. DanG I miss fishing too!  :'(
