does the retraining involve epoxy, heat, moisture, or clamps?  or all of the above.

Pith in the center of slabs is the most valuable wood we have to offer. Sometimes it requires some work to develop into what you want it to do, but pith in boards/slabs are always hot sellers. It's interesting how customers vary from coast to coast. Don't get me started on sapwood. I sell a ton of that too raw or reworked.

Here are some pics of wood, all pith in, that went out the door today and one pith piece that I am "retraining" to behave itself and make $ for me instead of going in the trash heap. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

Ahhh, I misunderstood the title of this thread. I thought we were gonna have discussion/ whine off about stringy bark.  I think I would win that whine off. Regardless, carry on. 😁😁

I love discussing problems with Doug.  I always try to get him on the phone, when I have a problem or question.

Sawmills and Milling / Re: The Opening Face
Last post by GAB - Today at 03:07:46 PM
Concerning the opening face I sometimes let the customer determine that for me.
A. When the log has been laying on the ground, I try and get rid of the mud section as soon as possible and not have my blade sawing into it.
B. When the log has butt flare and there is only one way to orient the log on the bed so the mast will get by without having to use a chainsaw for clearance.
C. When the branch stubs are such that the options are limited as to how to saw without spending a lot of time pruning a tree (YH ism).  One time I had the offbearer hold a block of wood between the tree and the log stop to get the tree far enough to be able to run the saw down the length.  After the first pass there was no more problem.
Sometimes you have to be creative with what the customer desires sawed.

SO now I'd like to ask a question: In which directions does your debarker turn? Does it throw chips toward the far end of the bed, or back toward the head end?
Congrats on a happy mill, now the work starts. ffcheesy

Lynn and Peter. I apologize for sticking my nose in where it should not have been. I completely missed the difference between dimensional and full sized. I thought it was a simple little math error. Stupid me. Yes, both approaches work in different situations and it's a minor point. Yes, this has been discussed many many times and debated to death. I was just trying to fix something that wasn't broken. Sorry.

I am just one guy with one perception and I don't matter. I'll not get into this further with you and never bother you again about it. Feel free to stay or go as you please. There is no 'account deleting' here. I simply saw your repeated posting of how many read your post and that nobody gave you an answer you wanted and began taking that as a demand after several times. Sometimes people don't know, or can't offer a solution they are comfortable with so they don't. Sometimes not getting any suggestions is in itself an answer. Everybody has skills and knowledge in different areas. This forum is more about forestry related things than timber framing. It just happens that we also have a bunch of folks that are pretty good at it and some earn their living at it.
But there are other subjects here that perhaps sometime you might read and contribute to. It matters not. I wish you the best and you'll not hear from me anymore so you may do as you wish here.
I'm out.

Quote from: Jpd on Today at 09:39:30 AMI have to say, I am very disappointed in this site.  almost 600 views on this thread, and not a single useful response.  I have figured out the problem and cleared it with the engineer.  I was hoping for more from you guys, even just a little kernel to work with. I'm tempted to ask to delete my membership, I'll leave that up to the moderators, but as a new member with a few different posts, I feel disappointed in the lack of input.
There are usually many different ways to connect timbers. Without seeing the exact location of the timbers (in the entire frame) it is hard to say which way is best. You have your solution which was to have your engineer of record to design the joint and make it safe for you.
Good luck with your project.

I've got one old crown of Rhubarb you could pick now. The one beside it seems to be slow this spring, usually just as big. Both had stalks the size of your wrist last spring. They were huge. Maybe no snow cover affected the other one? Usually a big drift across the garden, but recently the breeze way has closed up with birch trees. I suspect some stuff will have less fruit this year, the raspberries and grapes were heavy with fruit last year. I have enough jam for 2 more years. I eat it every day to.  ffcheesy
